It all happened in a poker game.

Sittin' there playin' a 6/12 hold'em game about a week ago, a guy, JD, was
in the game, and, if you close your eyes and listen to him, you'd swear he
was Uncle Johnny Cash himself. So, as usual, to rib him, I put on my best
Doug doing Mike Keneally doing Johnny Cash impersonation and send out a
rousing version of "Ring o' Fire." Anyway, after the laughs, I mention
the old Johnny Cash variety show that used to be on in the sixties and....

...just like lightning struck, somebody was mentioning Andy Devine, who
apparently also had some sort of TV gig. Anyway, as usual, I catch a big
hand and have to fade out of the conversation, never getting any details
about the great Andy Devine. Anybody have any insight? And what about
that thong rind, anyway? Better yet, what the fuck is a thong rind?

Father Riley really wants to know, that is, if there's anything good
inside of you...

Doug.

Well, if you believe Nigey Lennon(and this is one of the reasons why I think
she's full of shit) the song "Andy" is somehow actually about her and the
"thong rhind" in question has something to do with the aftereffects of some
kind of sexual act she performed with a large shoe for Frank's amusement.
She says this in her book, but never explains how a song with lyrics that
speak of an ACTUAL PERSON (who is intrinsically NOT Nigey) could really
somehow be secretly about her. I suspect that if we knew more about Andy
Devine and what his role on the tv show was, the thong rhind thing would
become appearent.

LiverZoo <Live...@now-online.com> mentions:

Then, I suppose he used a leather thong to whip his kids into submission?

OK NEVER MIND. I just found this NG & didn't realize how behind
the times I was here. Sorry to quote from a book almost nobody
liked, but as someone who's never had any other FZ enthusiasts
to speak to, can't help appreciating something that points out
(lots of) things I hadn't noticed.

Did any of you out there like this damn book? Just asking.

Actually I do, even though I've been one of the more vocal critics of its
(in its original editions) myriad inaccuracies. But it's a very fun read.
I would humbly suggest, however (especially if you've got one of the
hardback editions), that you peruse "The Poodle Bites!" on the Keneally
page (URL below), which attempts to right a number of the book's
not-so-rights.

I'm only 3/4 of the way thru this book, still not sure what to agree
with (or if I should bother) but I bring it up in order to alert those
who are interested in Frank's 'conceptual continuity' throughout
his entire career. Even if you don't care for the author's interpre-
tations, it's fascinating stuff nonetheless.

One thing I don't understand is why Ben Watson incorporated many of Mike's
corrections, but stopped short of incorporating ALL of them. For example,
Watson's second edition still claims that Bob Harris from the Fillmore
1971 album rejoined the band in 1980, even though Mike points out that
these are two different people.

That's easy to figure out. Just like "...Poodle Play," you take what you
find useful and toss the shit away. It's up to you to decide which tome
has more useful matter.

Not thrilled with being politically preached-to either, but as I said

I like to pick it up and read a couple of pages at randon,
and then go play the CD that is mention in the pages.
Watson does point out things that I never noticed before, however he
does get carried away and spoos forth some incredible pretentious banter
similar in style to Nigey's writing (maybe she got lessons from Ben).
I don't think I could take it from start to finish.

I still think St Alfonso's is more an ode to IHOP for
satisfying those late night munchies. I just find it
humorous when Uncle Ben says that the pancakes are
Zappa's symbols for faeces (he uses a strange spelling
for feces) because they both are round and brown.

Yeah, the informational aspect of the book is okay, I guess. It's just the
flowery, overblown, verbose, "classical education" writing style that makes me
want to puke. I mean, I understand what the meanings of the words, it's just
when they're grouped the way Watson groups them they register in my brain as
gibberish. I mean, what the fuck does "In 'Andy' Zappa faults the fake by

reference to externals, a view of inner/outer that refuses the pious chicanery

of transcendent innerness." mean?!? I read something like that and think "you
just said a whole bunch of nuthin". It does make me laugh, though.

Gary,
was your childhood deprived of the wonders of
"Wild Bill Hickok" reruns, with Guy Madison as
Bill and Andy Devine as "Jingles"?

For a while there, I couldn't get away from
the guy. Then when I got older and started collecting
old radio shows, I discovered that Andy was a regular
on The Jack Benny Show between 1936 and 1940, on
which he was a real audience favorite.

When I was a wee lad growing up (around the time the Mothers were

I played cheesy little kiddie-records. Though I didn't know who he was at

Faeces is the English spelling, whereas feces I assume from yr. address is
American English cf: thru & through

As in:

...he is notorious for once having eaten faeces on stage...

I have always harboured a sneaking suspicion that the song is about exactly
what it says:
