: RATS...DISC NUMBER TWO...LOOSE!
Nope - and here's the long version folks...
R! ... R... R is for Rarity, and that's what an Xmas 76 page is around here.
D! ... D is for Don't you go pullin' the trick of embarrassing me on your
web page again, for if you Do, the R before the D will be Raging - as in
Destruction, which is what the D 'could' be. See?
R D N! N is nothing, which is what I see when I look for the Christmas
review, that you, in your infinite wisdomical style, are taking a while to
produce. How obtuse...
R D N! (no hyphen) r d n Z!! Z rhymes with bed, not flea, although you
wouldn't know it if you took any notice of that yellow bird and giant
elephant on kids TV... which, in a roundabout way, takes us to the Z being
for... Znuffaloffagus!
L! Oh my God, you don't wanna go to L, for in L they have the charred and
scarred remains of touring pages from ages ago, when B. L. Z. Bub played Dub
for the ladies of Hades, and the Dead were Grateful.
r d n z L! After I had gotten through with spelling RDNZL, correctly, and
with no hyphens, I felt much better and could get on with the rest of this
post:
Join the march, and eat my starch.

For me, RDNZL has always been the sound of fireworks exploding.
Every newyear (If I stay home) I play it at twelwe o'clock.
Then I look at the fireworks from my large windows at the top of the
hill. Try it, and you will never again ask this question.

Two possibilities: A play off "Rapunzel," and "Redundant," just a Zappa
play on words for the sake of a song title;
OR
RDNZL was apparently the choices given on the transmission window of some
old cars in Zappa's youth, R--reverse, D--Drive, N--Neutral, Z--takes the
place of 2, for second gear; and L--or l in lower case, while looks like a
1, and means first gear. Maybe he always thought it looked like Rdunzl.
Or maybe RDNZL is swahili for "I never ate shit on stage."
TT
What do you mean, "maybe"? I thought everyone knew that!
I was under the understanding (it's better than being above it.....<cymbal
crash>) that it was swahili for "I lied, I ate shit on stage and got high all
of the time!" No?

Don't forget to add the "Dynamic" when you refer to the great and
legendary entertainer Eric Buxton, immortalized on Broadway the
Hardway.

Once again, that isn't correct.
1) I've never seen that PRINTED on the steering column, although some automatic
gearshifts stick out the side of the column.
2) It's not "low", but 1. For first gear.
3) It's not the correct order, either. It goes Reverse, Neutral, Drive, 2nd,
1st.

I beg to differ. My car most definitely has an L, for low gear.

This has been done to death, but - given that FZ didn't drive, he could
easily have switched a couple of characters (or done it deliberately so
that it could be pronounce "Redunzel") - so in the absence of concrete
info, which may never come to light, it's still a valid hypothesis.

Hmm, perhaps we should start searching for the right type of car. Maybe a
Cadillac...

The following paragraph is a repeat of a message I posted on this
topic some days ago:
Some of the American cars equipped with automatic transmissions, in
the 50's when they first came out, had the gears arranged with Reverse
and Drive next to each other. After people had accidents and
dangerous situations with that design, a more or less standard pattern
was adopted with Reverse separated from Drive and Neutral between
them. On the early automatic equipped cars, Park wasn't even thought
of yet and the selector was placed in the lowest forward gear with the
emergency (actually called the "parking" back then) brake applied.
Some additional information in regards to the quoted post above and
others in this thread:
"L" was indeed used to designate "low gear", not "1" signifying "first
gear".
I believe the type of American car that had the RDN2L shift
arrangement was the General Motors' Hydramatic transmission
equipped cars of the late 1940's up to the late 1950's. These would be
the Oldsmobile (most if not all of the early Rocket 88 models had the
Hydramatic), Pontiac, and Cadillac. I sold my 1948 Cadillac two years
ago and it had this automatic transmission in it.
The Chevrolet cars of this period utilized the Powerglide two-speed
automatic transmission. The Chevy was really the lower-class, or,
entry level, of the General Motors family of cars. I believe the Chevy
cars weighed less and therefore didn't require the additional gears
that the Hydramatic transmission provided.

Didn't flame. Just posted an equally plausible and implausible
suggestion for one letter in this complex equation. The old guesses
are getting a bit tiresome...

Speaking of Dweezil: That was inspired by Gail's toe, right? Maybe
RDNZL was another part of someone's body?

What's surprising is that the Barking Pumpkin origin might actually
not be cigarette coughs but flatulence! At least according to Ben
Watson, the former might be a cleaned up version of the reality.
It's less shocking to cough than to flatulate.
I shoulda put one of my patent pending "I've never seen a..." in there
somewhere... I stand corrected.

That was so good I had to look up the definition. What I really like
about it is the pronunciation...it made me think of the maternal
parent of Zoogz Rift.
How about Zeitgeist?

That's Zoogz's Daddy, Oh.
On the other hand, in Poodle Play Mr.Watson is quite anal-fixated, so maybe
HE just wanted it to be about flatulence.
And I don't (want to) know what your farts sound like, but mine and the
farts of those that I love don't sound like barking.

Frank's facial hair could be a Rdnzl.
