Could one of you kind folks post the words to "Wind up workin in a gas
station"? I've been struggling with it all day, used 2 versions, still
haven't got it all.

Thanx in advance.

The most mysterious line in the song was clarified for me on this
newsgroup sometime back. It's Frank doing a pseudo-German accent saying:

"Manny de camper wants to buy some white."

Apparently a reference to white gas, something nearly every camper needs.
You're on your own with the rest of the song. Why not post it when your
done?

Thanks Rob... now I can get some quality sleep tonight.
I tried to do the same thing as Jane did... I got this:

Thi.zis.. zng.. by the...(band?) yu..zum.... (very informative, huh?)
If it does it's because you're dumb! (hmmm a little better..)
That's the way it is where I come from... (no probs there...)
If it fits ya' too, let me see your thumb. (best I could do)

Hope it sparks something in yez brainz. - even if it ain't close.

It's been a while, but here's a stab at it from my rusty memory...

: Thi.zis.. zng.. by the...(band?) yu..zum.... (very informative, huh?)

This here song might offend you some

: If it does it's because you're dumb! (hmmm a little better..)

: That's the way it is where I come from... (no probs there...)
: If it fits ya' too, let me see your thumb. (best I could do)

If you've been there, too, let me see your thumb.

I never did know what the heck that "Manny the camper" line was... thanks!

You oughta know now that all yer education ("educashum"!)

Yer gonna wind up workin' in a gas station...

According to an interview FZ did in 1989, 'whitefish' is gasoline.

to mean?

No. It's Manny the Camper wants to buy some white.

It refers to white gas, which is something like propane that an RV would
reuqire. This is verified in the interview that the editors of Society
Pages conducted with FZ.

Wind Up Working in a Gas Station by FZ

This here song might offend you some,
If it does it's because you're dumb,
That's the way it is where I come from,
Well if you been there too let me see your thumb
Let me see your thumb etc etc.... (WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??!??!??)
Show me your thumb if you're really dumb (X3)
Show me your thumb if you're dumb!
Hey now better make a decision,
Be a moron and keep your position,
You ought to know now all your education,
Won't help you nohow,
You're gonna wind up working in a gas station (X4)
Pumpin the gas every night etc....

Manny de camper wants to buy some white..... etc....

Hmmm Manny de Camper.... sounds like _he_ could have been a buddy of Herb
and Morty eh? :) anyway....

I've been singing this song for a week now.... and playing the YCDTOSA
vol6 version at very high decibel levels....

Thank you Frank.

and thanks to everyone who helped me decipher this song....

The thumb reference explains an obvious way to identify anyone who makes
a living working on automobiles. Automechanics typically have black
grease under the finger and thumb nails. In addtion, the thumb has a
tendency to take some abuse in this occupation, and after a while will
have a hammered on appearance. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud.

Sorry to prolong this thread beyond reason but I just had a thought and
I hate to waste it, they're so few and far between -- is it possible
that the line could be "Many the camper needs some whi-i-ite" rather
than "Manny the camper needs some whi-i-ite"? Gives it a little different
spin. Just wondering. I had no clue what the line was before this very
informative little thread.

I always thought it was "Man in the camper needs some white".

Thank you all for the help... I think the "real words" are very clear
now... however I still don't get the "Let me see your thumb" bit. What
could this possibly have to do with pumping gas (or being dumb)?

discuss.....

Obviously, you've never been under the hood of a car before! As a
general rule, the thumbs and fingers of mechanics are noticably scarred
and calloused from working with cast iron and stamped steel. A seemingly
permanent black stain from the carbon in grease and oil is also common in
that line of work. In addition, mechanics are seldom regarded as members
of the intellectual elite, so the stigma of a black, scarred thumb could
translate to "destined for a lifetime of failure and mediocrity".
i.e. "Wind up working in a gas station"...

Well... it looks like you're moving up in the world.... :)

Thanx for the info, and you are right, I haven't been under the hood of a
car, at least not for any extended period of time. Damn it... I'm a
musician :) I appreciate the insight, and now that I understand the
song as a whole, I have some deffinate opinions about some people I have
met who continue to dispense petrolium products. and btw I deffinately
think the YCDTOSA vol 6 version kicks butt. viva Bianca.

Then I take it you are a "GOOD" musician, or at least well paid. I got
quite a few of my "Thumb scars" under the hood of the F***ing ttour bus!!!
That is the wonderful thing about the "Buffalo Chip Tour" (i.e Montana,
Idaho,Dakotas,Utah,Neb). Any guy with a black thumb still gets laid if he
has a guitar and a bus! (groupies love to come in the bus).
The bitter irony of it all is now that I have stepped up the food chain
a little bit, there are damned few pump jockeys for me to abuse! (self-
service took the sting out of my revenge) -LINETRAMP-
