Top amateurs skate in for Greenwich Town Competition

February 7, 2005
Southern Connecticut Newspapers, Inc.
http://www.greenwichtime.com/

[snip]

More than 80 novice and advanced figure skaters, including
Special Olympians, from Fairfield and Westchester counties and
upstate Connecticut competed in free dance, synchronized skating
and freestyle categories at the free, all-day event, sponsored by
the Windy Hill Skating Club and Greenwich Department of Parks and
Recreation..

[snip]

Schuyler Eldridge, 16, followed Kayla as the sole entry in the
Men's Novice Short Freestyle category. In his fourth year in the
Greenwich competition, Eldridge wowed the crowd with back- and
front-scratch spins and jumps to a bluesy Frank Zappa instrumental.

"I sort of do local competitions and this one is good practice.
It's a low-pressure atmosphere," the Yorktown, N.Y. resident said.

What are you going to do, have Police Comissioner Gordon deliver a
mandate to Batman & Robin to secure all of the Daytona area and State
of Florida to be sure we don't sneak up next to you?

I haven't received that first registered legal letter you threatened
me with around the first of January, when's this one scheduled to
arrive.... in April?

I'm guessing either "Pink Napkins" or "Toads of the Short Forest" 8^)

I wish the article mentioned the tune, but unfortunately, they didn't.

Perhaps the tune was something with a perceived offensive title, like
'WIEH'.

I don't know whether skaters actually choreograph to the music or it's
just something to set an aroma for their performances - but if so,
skating to WIEH in 9/4 would be kewl to watch.

This just in:

Thursday February 11, 2005, Canarsie, NY (Canarsie is located at the
south-eastern shoreline of Brooklyn, not far from beautiful Jamaica Bay and
the famous Sheepshead Bay. It's roughly 15 miles from Manhattan.)

Local Skater injured in melee at the Watermelon ice arena.

Although the details are somewhat sketchy at this point, some information
can be reported. Local skater and Olympic hopeful Gene Green was performing
his routine when a melee broke out among the spectators. Apparently the
cause of the disruption was Mr. Green's choice of music. The as yet
unidentified music is most likely a compilation of at least two pieces by
composer and rock musician Frank Zappa (according to witnesses). Several
people have reported that the music for Mr. Green's program started with the
lyric "This is bebop, even though you think it doesn't sound like that".
One of the judges said, "At the beginning of Mr. Green's program, I was
giving him high marks for his intricate footwork even though it was somewhat
unusual".

At this point the details become more confused, the following is a consensus
of several witnesses I interviewed. Although a large number of the
spectators were 'agitated' by the music selection, most were well behaved.
That is until about half way through Mr. Green's program when the music
abruptly changed to an instrumental piece of Mr. Zappa's. Some spectators
(who have more familiarity with Mr. Zappa than I do) said the piece in
question is named "The Black Page". The spectators already 'agitated'
evidently went berserk. One witness said "It was like they had a hot poker
shoved in their ear". Fights broke out all around the arena. Any object not
nailed down became projectiles thrown on the ice and at other spectators.
"It was as if everyone went mad at the same time", one witness said.

Mr. Green, apparently distracted by what was happening all around him, lost
concentration and tried to execute a quintuple jump while simultaneously
performing a sit spin. Mr. Green's coach (known only as Big Swifty) said
"[That] music transition was to be a highlight of Gene's program. The
"'quint'/sit spin" combo has never been done and was supposed to be a set up
for some even more complicated maneuvers later in the program". Mr. Swifty
added "Although I'm unfamiliar with [most of] Mr. Zappa's music I find the
choreographic potential amazing". Mr. Green's injuries are unknown at this
time but Mr. Swifty said "I know he has some upper body damage and at least
one of his knees is pretty bad"

Although the Police have made no official statement, no charges are expected
to be filed. One city official said "There was no crime as such. What are we
to do - outlaw music?". I for one wonder - after all, prior to last night's
competition I would have said "It can't happen here".

Clearly the result of polyrhythmic choreography, where the upper body
does something in 11 while the legs try to stay in 8.

Friday February 11, 2005, Canarsie, NY (Canarsie is located at the
south-eastern shoreline of Brooklyn, not far from beautiful Jamaica Bay and
the famous Sheepshead Bay. It's roughly 15 miles from Manhattan.)

Official Statement issued by the I.O.C.

The I.O.C. (International Olympics Committee) issued a brief statement today
regarding the incident at the Canarsie Watermelon ice arena. The statement
is as follows: "We are saddened by the events that occurred at the
Watermelon ice arena. Our sympathies go out to Mr. Green and anyone else who
was injured. The I.O.C. is seriously considering a ban on all of Mr. Zappa's
music at I.O.C. sponsored events."

In a phone interview Michelle Kwan (5-time World Champion, 9-time National
Champion, 2-time Olympic Medalist) said "I am saddened to hear that the
I.O.C. is contemplating a ban on Mr. Zappa's music. I had been planning to
use one of his pieces at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. I was
going to use "Peaches En Regalia" but now I don't know what I'm going to do"
Ms Kwan needed a few moments to compose herself, then added: "I have to go
now; I'm just too upset".

Sasha Cohen who withdrew from this year's Grand Prix Series with a back
injury. Also reached by phone said she is: "focused on the U.S. Nationals in
Portland, Oregon and the World Championships scheduled in Moscow in March".
Ms Cohen declined comment on her back injury saying:" In light of the events
in Canarsie I'd rather not add anything to an already volatile situation". A
nationally known skater, who wishes to remain nameless, said: "I know for a
fact that Sasha has been working on a new program for the Olympics and
includes several Zappa pieces. I believe they [the music pieces] are "Toads
of the Short Forest", "Truck Driver Divorce" and "Stick it Out". I also
think this had something to do with her back injury"

Rudy Galindo (U.S. National Champion - 1996, and many other awards and
medals) issued this statement to the press: "I think it would be wrong for
the I.O.C. to ban Mr. Zappa's music. Although I don't skate in amateur
competitions anymore this [the ban on Zappa's music] could have serious
implications in regards to freedom of expression. Recently I've been skating
to "Send in the Clowns" but now I'm going to change my program and skate to
"He's so Gay". I want to add my voice to any protest of the potential ban on
Mr. Zappa's music by the I.O.C.".

Closer to home - Mr. Green's doctor says that Mr. Green is expected to make
a full recovery from his injuries sustained in the melee last night at the
Watermelon ice arena. "However he [Mr. Green] is in a lot of pain and under
heavy sedation. His only comment since being admitted has been "Ich bin der
Chrome Dinette".

The author of the book mentioned below was featured on a segment
of this morning's 'Today Show'. The book looks like it will be
very informative regarding further deconstruction of the lies and
bullshit of the head(case) sociopath - PyriteGuanito - that has
ruined this and various other newsgroups.

You've all seen his antisocial personality disorder while
exhibiting extreme deceitfulness (utilizing the real name and
chosen username of his victim!!), impulsivity and a lack of
remorse. I will certainly purchase a copy before my newly-planned
trip to Florida in the near future.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Sociopath Next Door: The Ruthless Versus the Rest of Us

FROM THE PUBLISHER

We live in a dangerous world, threatened by international
terrorists, corrupt politicians, unethical corporate executives,
and street criminals. But there's another type of dangerous
person who often goes unnoticed-the sociopath next door.
According to the latest research, four percent of the population
has an antisocial personality disorder, leaving them with no
conscience, no sense of guilt or shame. They could be the people
we encounter daily in our neighborhood, school, workplace, or
even in our family.

The Sociopath Next Door is the first book to take a hard look at
the sociopaths in everyday life. Martha Stout, a practicing
psychotherapist and Harvard Medical School instructor, explains
that these people learn early on to show sham emotion, but
underneath live only to dominate others and win. The fact is,
statistically, we each know at least one sociopath, and readers
will have an "a-ha!" moment of recognizing that someone they
know-someone they worked for, or were involved with-is a
sociopath. Unfortunately, one of the chief characteristics of a
sociopath is a kind of glow or charisma that makes them more
charming or interesting than other people. They are more
spontaneous, more intense, complex, or even sexier than everyone
else, making them tricky to identify and leaving us easily
seduced. But The Sociopath Next Door teaches us to recognize the
ruthless among us.

Filled with vivid case studies from contemporary life, the book
helps us understand where so much of the cruelty and suffering in
our world comes from, and reaches out with sympathy and
constructive advice to victims of the tyrants, powerful and
petty, who haunt our lives.Ultimately, The Sociopath Next Door
gives a sense of satisfaction from knowing that, in the end, the
ninety-six percent of us who have a conscience are happier than
the sociopaths, for it is our intimate connections with others,
through feelings of obligation, friendship, and love, that are
fundamental to a life well lived.

FROM THE CRITICS

Publishers Weekly
Harvard Medical School psychiatrist Stout says that as many as 4%
of the population are conscienceless sociopaths who have no
empathy or affectionate feelings for humans or animals. As Stout
(The Myth of Sanity) explains, a sociopath is defined as someone
who displays at least three of seven distinguishing
characteristics, such as deceitfulness, impulsivity and a lack of
remorse. Such people often have a superficial charm, which they
exercise ruthlessly in order to get what they want. Stout argues
that the development of sociopathy is due half to genetics and
half to nongenetic influences that have not been clearly
identified. The author offers three examples of such people,
including Skip, the handsome, brilliant, superrich boy who
enjoyed stabbing bullfrogs near his family's summer home, and
Doreen, who lied about her credentials to get work at a
psychiatric institute, manipulated her colleagues and, most
cruelly, a patient. Dramatic as these tales are, they are
composites, and while Stout is a good writer and her exploration
of sociopaths can be arresting, this book occasionally appeals to
readers' paranoia, as the book's title and its guidelines for
dealing with sociopaths indicate. (Feb. 8) Copyright 2004 Reed

Library Journal
Stout (clinical psychiatry, Harvard Medical Sch.; The Myth of
Sanity: Divided Consciousness and the Promise of Awareness)
offers a novel perspective on sociopaths, i.e., people who have
no conscience. Not only does she provide case studies and
references to standard literature like Hervey Cleckley's The Mask
of Sanity, but she also fashions the book in self-help mode. Her
decision to do this stems from an alarming American Psychiatric
Association statistic contending that four percent of the U.S.
population-or one person in 25-is sociopathic. That makes it
likely that everyone has encountered at least one sociopath.
Accordingly, Stout provides self-defense measures in the form of
"Thirteen Rules for Dealing with Sociopaths in Everyday Life";
moreover, she supplies provocative discussion about the role of
conscience in the "normal" world. Highly recommended for all
public libraries and for university libraries with large
psychology collections. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 10/1/04; see also

Kirkus Reviews
From the author of The Myth of Sanity (2001), a remarkable
philosophical examination of the phenomenon of sociopathy and its
everyday manifestations. Readers eager for a tabloid-ready survey
of serial killers, however, will be disappointed. Instead, Stout
(Psychiatry/Harvard Medical School) busies herself with exploring
the workaday lives and motivations of those garden-variety
sociopaths who are content with inflicting petty tyrannies and
small miseries. As a practicing therapist, she writes, she has
spent the past 25 years aiding the survivors of psychological
trauma, most of them "controlled and psychologically shattered by
individual human perpetrators, often sociopaths." Antisocial
personality disorder, it turns out, occurs in around four percent
of the population, so it's not too surprising that treating their
victims has kept Stout quite busy for the past quarter-century.
Employing vivid composite character sketches, the author
introduces us to such unsavory characters as a psychiatric
administrator who specializes in ingratiating herself with her
office staff while making her patients feel crazier; a captain of
industry who killed frogs as a child and is now convinced he can
outsmart the SEC; and a lazy ladies' man who marries purely to
gain access to his new wife's house and pool. These portraits
make a striking impact, and readers with unpleasant neighbors or
colleagues may find themselves paying close attention to Stout's
sociopathic-behavior checklist and suggested coping strategies.
In addition to introducing these everyday psychopaths, the author
examines why the rest of us let them get away with murder. She
extensively considers the presence or absence of conscience,
aswell as our discomfort with questioning those seen as being in
power. Stout also ponders our willingness to quash our inner
voice when voting for leaders who espouse violence and war as a
solution to global problems-pointed stuff in a post-9/11
political climate. Deeply thought-provoking and unexpectedly
lyrical. Agent: Susan Lee Cohen
