Q1. What are the lyrics to "Bobby Brown"?
A1. The lyrics to this song have been requested many times
by various readers of this newsgroup. The song's popu-
larity may be due to its controversial, sexual subject
matter or perhaps because it has a good melody. Who
knows? Who really cares?
The lyrics to Bobby Brown as they are printed in the lyric
sheet on the album (vinyl):
BOBBY BROWN 2:43
lead vocal: Zappa
basic track recorded live
at the Odeon Hammersmith, London
over-dubs: lots
Hey there people, I'm Bobby Brown
They say I'm the cutest boy in town
My car is fast, my teeth is shiny
I tell all the girls they can kiss my heinie
Here I am at a famous school
I'm dressin' sharp n' I'm
Actin' cool
I got a cheerleader here wants to help with my paper
Let her do all the work, n' maybe later I'll rape her
Oh God I am the American dream
I do not think I'm too extreme
An' I'm a handsome sonofabitch
I'm gonna get a good job n' be real rich
Women's Liberation
Came creepin' across the nation
I tell you people, I was not ready
When I fucked this dyke by the name of Freddie
She made a little speech then
Aw, she tried to make me say when
She had my balls in a vice, but she left the dick
I guess it's still hooked on, but now it shoots too quick
Oh God I am the American dream
But now I smell like Vaseline
An' I'm a miserable sonofabitch
Am I a boy or a lady... I don't know which
So I went out n' bought me a leisure suit
I jingle my change, but I'm still kinda cute
Got a job doin radio promo
An' none of the jocks can even tell I'm a homo
Eventually me n' a friend
Sorta drifted along into S&M
I can take about an hour
on the tower of power
'Long as I gets a little golden shower
Oh God I am the American Dream
With a spindle up my butt till it makes me scream
An' I'll do anything to get ahead
I lay awake nights sayin, ``Thank you, Fred!''
Oh God, Oh God, I'm so fantastic
Thanks to Freddie, I'm a sexual spastic
And my name is Bobby Brown
Watch me now, I'm goin' down
And my name is Bobby Brown
Watch me now, I'm goin' down, etc.

It is sang on the record ALMOST verbatim to the above
lyrics, with a couple background vocals lines added.
The song is titled "Bobby Brown Goes Down" on the CD
release of Sheik Yerbouti.

Q2. What are the lyrics to "Muffin Man"? / What is a scapular?
A2.
Muffin Man is a Frank Zappa song from the album Bongo Fury.
MUFFIN MAN by Frank Zappa
The Muffin Man is seated at the table in the laboratory of the
Utility Muffin Research Kitchen. Reaching for an oversized chrome
spoon he gathers an intimate quantity of dried muffin remnants,
and brushing his scapular aside, proceeds to dump these inside
of his shirt. He turns to us and speaks:
"Some people like cupcakes better. I for one care less for them."
Arrogantly twisting the sterile canvas snoot of a fully charged
icing anointment utensil, he poots forth a quarter-ounce green
rosette near the summit of a dense but radiant muffin of his own
design.
Later he says:
"Some people, some people (heh) like cupcakes exclusively while
myself I say: `There is nought, nor ought there be, nothing so
exalted on the face of God's gray earth as that Prince Of Foods,
THE MUFFIN.'"
Girl, you thought he was a man, but he was a muffin.
He hung around 'til you found that he didn't know nothin'.
Girl, you thought he was a man, but he only was a puffin.
No cries is heard in the night as a result of him stuffin'.
[guitar solo]
Girl, you thought he was a man, but he only was a puffin.
No cries is heard in the night as a result of him stuffin'.

[ed. note: The posting of the muffin man lyrics led to a flurry
of related postings debating whether Frank was saying the word
"scapular" or "scapula" in the introduction. These postings
included deviations about the definitions or intended meanings
of the "mystery word". The following post seemed to shed the
most light on the subject. ] :
From: za...@bnr.ca (Ron Zajac)
Gosh, is there NO ONE out there who went to Catholic School or
Catechism as a lad?
Here's what it is; two little cloth & paper icons of Mary, Jesus
and/or some Saints bound by two thin ribbons (about 2.5' long):
+---+ +---+
| |===================================| |
| | | |
| |===================================| |
+---+ +---+
You drape the ribbons over your shoulders (over your t-shirt, under
your over-shirt) so one icon sits on your breastbone, another in the
middle of your back. I forget what sacrament the issuing of this
thing is associated with; perhaps Confirmation. There were all kinds
of associated cool legends that the kids passed around; that if you
wore it when you died, you'd go straight to Heaven; that there was
once a soldier who cussed/swore/drank/etc--but he Wore His Scapular,
and bragged between swigs and pelvic thrusts that he'd go to heaven
because he always wore his scapular. Well, he died during combat and
they miraculously found the scapular 50' away from where he died.
WHAT do you THINK of THAT?!??!
Anyway, that's the story as I know it.

Q3. I heard that Frank Zappa has passed on. Is this true?
A3. Frank Vincent Zappa, who was born December 21, 1940
died in his Laurel Canyon home shortly before 6 PM PST,
on December 4, 1993, after a long battle with prostate
cancer. Though his death has left many in grief, it is
fortunate that he left behind a legacy of great music
that will live on well past our own mortal coils.
Moon Zappa had this to say:
[Originally posted by <p01...@psilink.com> (Mike Fitzmaurice) ] :
"You have reached the Zappa Hotline. This is Moon. My mother and my family
are asking those of you wishing to send flowers or to commemorate my father
in some way, to make a donation in Frank's name to the Office for
Intellectal Freedom of the American Library Association, a 501-C tax-exempt
organization, reachable by phone at 312-280-4223 or by fax at 312-440-9374,
or to the Cousteau society, or GreenPeace, or any favorite environmental
cause.
"My family is concerned about those of you who would like to express their
sympathies, but are financially restricted. Just play his music, if you're
a musician, and if you aren't, play his music anyway -- that will be enough
for him.
"My family hopes to be able to announce a memorial service at some future
date."
"Lastly, my mother asks that you be kind to your family, and to your
friends, and most especially to yourself."

Q4. What are those funny-looking uppercase acronyms I see when
people are mentioning Zappa albums?
A4. (This is not really a frequently asked question, but has the
vulnerability to become one.) Some of Zappa's album titles
are longer than albums that most regular people listen to.
To prevent Carpal-Tunnel syndrome in the typing fingers, some
readers have abbreviated the album titles.
These are some common acronyms and the full album titles:
ASATLTSADW A Ship Arriving Too Late Save A Drowning Witch
JABFLA - Just Another Band From L.A.
OSFA - One Size Fits All
SUNPYG - Shut Up N' Play Your Guitar
TBBYNHIYL The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life
TMFU - The Man From Utopia
WOIIFTM - We're Only In It For The Money
YAWYI - You Are What You Is
YCDTOSA - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore
[ note: RDNZL looks like an acronym, but is actually the title
of a song that originally appeared on the album Studio Tan. On
the original Warner Bros. vinyl release, the song was listed as
"Redunzl". This is one of the albums that Warner Bros. released
without Frank's permission, and Zappa filed suit against Warner
to obtain the rights to those albums. ]

/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-
Q6. I heard that Frank Zappa participated in a "Gross Out" contest
on stage. Is this true?
A6. The following is from Frank's autobiography, "The Real Frank
Zappa Book":
The other fantasy is that I once `took a shit on stage.'
This has been propounded with many variations, including (but not
limited to):
[1] I ate shit on stage.
[2] I had a `gross-out contest' (what the fuck is a `gross-out
contest'?) with Captain Beefheart and we both ate shit on stage, etc.
[3] I had a `gross-out contest' with Alice Cooper and he stepped on
baby chickens and then I ate shit on stage, etc.
I was in a London club called the Speak Easy in 1967 or
'68. A member of a group called the Flock, recording for Columbia
at the time, came over to me and said:
"You're fantastic. When I heard about you eating that shit
on stage, I thought, `That guy is way,way out there.'"
I said, "I never ate shit on stage." He looked really
depressed - like I had just broken his heart.
For the records, folks: I never took a shit on stage, and
the closest I ever came to eating shit anywhere was at a Holiday
Inn buffet in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1973.

Q7. I find some of Zappa's lyrics to be offensive. Is Zappa
a sexist?
A7. Zappa has written many songs that seem to "attack" a particular
lifestyle or belief system. Most people will find at least one
of these songs to be directed at them personally. The best advice
for those offended: Lighten up!. Zappa seems to believe that if
you cannot laugh at yourself, then you are taking yourself too
seriously.
from "The Real Frank Zappa Book":
Am I a `Sexist' - or What?
If you were to take all the lyrics I've ever written and analyze
how many songs are about `women in demeaning positions,' as opposed
to `men in demaning positions' you would find that most of the songs
are about stupid men.
The songs I write about women are not gratuitous attacks on them,
but statements of fact. The song "Jewish Princess" caused the Anti-
Defamation League of the B'nai B'rith to complain bitterly and demand
an apology. I did not apologize then and refuse to do so now because,
unlike `The Unicorn', such creatures do exist - and deserve to be
`commemorated' with their own special opus.
The basic function of any ethnic protective PR organization is
to do what Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-California) suggested on the
`Larry King show' - "maintain the fiction." (He used it in context
of protecting the Reagan administration during the Iran-contra scandal,
suggesting it was our duty as Americans to support the President by
looking the other way.)
Italians have an organization to `maintain the fiction' that
no Italians are in the Mafia, nor do they sell drugs while engaging
in murder for hire. If you want to believe that, fine - welcome to
Fantasy Land. If you want to believe that wrestling is real, go for
it - and if you want to believe that women are a wonderful species
that: [1] never goes to the toilet; [2] can't possibly do anything
wrong; [3] is completely superior to men, then believe it - whatever
makes you feel good.

Q9. What is a "Florentine Pogen" ?
A9. You might ask yourself why anyone would want to ask the
above question. For those who are scratching your heads,
there is a song called "Florentine Pogen" on "One Size
Fits All", "The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life",
and "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" vol. 4.
From: lis...@sics.se (Bjorn Lisper)
"Pogens" is an anglified spelling of the Swedish bakery "Pagens"
(where the "a" has a ring on top). "Pagens" is south Swedish dialect
and means "the boy's" (cookies, say). In Sweden, Pagens makes all
sorts of cookies, bread etc. It turns out that these Florentine
Pogens being sold in California are a type of cookie that Pagens
sells in Sweden, but under a different name. So Pagens seems to have
some business in California as well.

Q10. What are the names of Frank Zappa's kids?
A10. Frank's wife is Gail
Frank's kids: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet, and Diva Muffin.
Dweezil and Ahmet have a rock 'n roll band named Z.
(more from "The Real Frank Zappa" book):
When Dweezil was born, Gail decided to have `natural child-
birth'. At that time, the only hospital in Los Angeles that would
allow this process to occur with a Dad in the delivery room was
Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital.
When it was time for the Big Delivery, we experienced a
slight delay - we had to fill out a mass of papers before they'd
let us in, riddled with irrelevant questions like: "What religion
are you?"
Gail looked at me and said "What do we put?" I said,
"Musician."
That was the first thing that upset the admitting nurse.
The second thing to spoil her afternoon was when she asked: "What
are you going to name the child?" Gail said, "Dweezil."
Gail's got a funny looking toe which had been the source
of family amusement so often that it had aquired a `technical
name': it wasn't really a toe - it was a "Dweezil." I thought
then and continue to think today, that Dweezil is a nice name.
Fuck the nurse if she didn't like it.
The nurse pleaded and pleaded with us not to name the
child Dweezil. Labor pains and all, she was going to make Gail
stand there unless we gave her another name to put on the form.
I couldn't see letting Gail suffer just to argue the point, so
I rattled off an assortment of names of guys we knew: IAN
(Underwood) DONALD (Van Vliet) CALVIN (Schenkel) EUCLID (James
"Motorhead" Sherwood). As a result Dweezil's original birth
certificate name was Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa. The nurse
thought that was okay.
In spite of this harrowing experince, we always called
him Dweezil. He was five years old when he discovered the
`real names' on his birth certificate.
Dweezil was very upset, and demanded that steps be taken
to rectify this tragedy. We hired an attorney and had his name
legally changed to Dweezil.
(from the April 1993 Playboy interview):
PLAYBOY: Would they have been different had you named them
Sally or John?
ZAPPA: It's the last name that get's them in trouble.
PLAYBOY: How?
ZAPPA: I'm viewed as being weird. When somebody calls you weird,
then anything you touch becomes weird. On the other hand, they
like being weird.

Q11. Where can I get Frank Zappa lyrics and .gif files on the net?
A11. There is an anonymous ftp site at ftp.uwp.edu (IP 131.210.1.4)
that has lyrics and .gif pictures for many different music
artists, and yes, there is a Zappa directory. After logging on,
type "cd zappa.frank" (without the quotes) and you will end up
in the right directory. If you do not know how to use ftp, then
ask your system administrator or read the articles about ftp in
the "news.newusers.questions" newsgroup.
Lately, the ftp site at ftp.uwp.edu (University of Wisconsin,
Parkside) has been EXTREMELY busy, and they are restricting
usage during peak hours. If you, or if someone you know,
could provide an alternate, more accesible ftp site to store
and archive the Zappa stuff, (preferably in U.S.) please send

There is also a site in France at cnam.cnam.fr (IP 163.173.128.6)
that has a discography, a list of line-ups, and other FZ material.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Another site is at aloysius.ee.tut.fi (IP 130.230.101.25) in
the /zappa directory. There is a discography, a GIF directory,
and some sound files in Macintosh and Sun formats.

Q16. What is the Japanese text on the cover of "Zoot Allures"?
A16. From: ag...@Freenet.carleton.ca (Dennis Guertin)
Back when ZOOT ALLLURES came out I was working in an engineering
department, which had a Japanese exchange engineer posted to
Canada. I brought the album in to ask him and the converstaion
went something like this:
"Yoshi, what's this say?"
"Nothing."
"What do you mean "nothing"?"
"I mean it doesn't mean anything?"
"Do you mean you can't read it?"
"No, I can read it."
"Well, what's it say?"
"Nothing."
"Yoshi, can you read this or not?"
"I can read it."
By this point I finally figured out that he meant since the
meaning was not decipherable to him, it meant nothing to him.
"Yoshi, say what this says."
"I don't know what it means. It says "Frank Zappa".
Now, I don't know if he was pulling my leg and goddamn he
WAS so polite he wouldn't have said "Shit" if his mouth was full
of it, but that's what he said. I assumed his thought processes
were going "What's a frank zappa?". That reminds me: Anyone know
the joke for which the punchline is "What's an Ali McGraw?". Been
trying to remember it for a decade or two.
------------------------------------------------------------
From: lab...@DBresearch-berlin.de (Johannes Labisch)
I have an old interview (from that time) at home (german translated)
where Franks is asked about these signs and he says it's his name, in
two different ways of writing. One of it was "Fu-ran-ku Zap-pa".
------------------------------------------------------------
From: rn....@rose.com (Mark Erdman)
Yeah, the five characters on the back cover are just random
characters that can be read as "Furanku Zappa". It's not the way the
Japanese people _really_ write his name, though. Actually, the
characters for writing foreign names in Japanese are really simple,
maybe 4 lines at most. The ones on the back cover are Chinese-style
characters, which would usually be used to express ideas instead of
sounds like the ones they write foreign languages or conjugate verbs
with. I'm not sure why he put it on that cover, but I have a
suspicion about how it got there. In the book I mentioned last time,
Frank said that when his son, Dweezil, was a kid he used to have a
Japanese friend, and would try writing things in kanji all the time.
So my theory is that Dweezil did it for the album. About the thing on
the front cover - I'm not skilled enough to read it, but I recognize
it as a _hanko_ print. These are little seals that Japanese people
register and use as their signatures when they sign bank transactions.
Usually, they're just the person's name in stylized form. I have a
penfriend living near Yokohama whose father is a skilled _hanko_
craftsman.

Q18. What are those Frank Zappa CDs/cassettes on Rhino? Are
they a ripoff or what?
A18. From: ra...@CS.Yale.Edu (Dan Rabin)
The ACTUAL, TRUE ANSWER:
They are copies of bootleg recordings that were originally marketed
illicitly. Rhino asked Zappa for permission to release them legally.
Zappa said yes: Rhino wasn't asking him to do any work, and he would
get royalties this way and also help wipe out demand for the illegal
products (hence `Beat the Boots') which have always infuriated him.
Rhino made the recordings from the actual records, and took the cover
art from the actual bootleg cover art. Naturally, the illegal
bootleggers weren't about to cooperate by providing the original
tapes, nor were they likely to complain about having their artwork
copied.
So there you have it. No one is trying to rip off the Zappa fan, but
Rhino and Zappa have conspired to rip off the bootleggers who
originally ripped off Zappa.
There *are* interesting tidbits on the bootlegs, such as a version of
`Holiday in Berlin' with words actually having to do with a sojourn in
Berlin. The sound quality is terrible. This is the exact same
tradeoff that potential bootleg-buyers have always faced, except that
now they won't be breaking any law by making the purchase. If you
weren't offended by the existence of the bootlegs in the first place
there's no reason to be offended now.

Q20. What role did FZ play in the PMRC "record-rating" hearings?
(see also Q25.)
A20. (from Option Magazine Interview JAN-FEB 1987):
Several months ago, it seemed a refreshing and deliciously
ironic moment when Frank Zappa was spotted on television,
testifying before a Senate committee. He was dressed in a jacket
and tie, much as he was more than two decades ago for an
appearance - in which he musically played a bicycle - on the
Steve Allen Show. Before the committee, however, with the
accumulated notoriety of the intervening years in evidence only
as subtext, the talkative, knowledgeable and apparently incensed
musician held forth as the most reasonable voice of the
afternoon.
Considering the urgent problems you'll find on the front
pages of even the lamest paper, the committee was holding
hearings on the non-issue of applying ratings to rock records.
Zappa had come to Washington to help nip this bit of proto-
fascism in the bud. Instigated by the Parents' Music Resource
Center, a well-connected group of Washington wives with kids in
school and time on their hands, the committee was examining the
possibility of a casual link between rock music and drug abuse,
teenage pregnancy, Satanism, concert violence and other things
which no one could seem to recall having existed before 1956.
Asked how something as trivial as record-rating became the
subject of a Senate inquiry, Zappa simply remarked, "A couple of
blow-jobs here and there and Bingo! - you get a hearing." He
added that Tipper Gore - wife of Senator Albert Gore and a key
figure in the PMRC - had recently demanded that MTV president Tom
Freston go to Washington to discuss the rating of music videos.
While any legislation against the various music media doesn't
seem likely at this point, Zappa notes that the current
administration is doing what it can to further its own ideology,
such as reviewing all documentaries being produced by both
National Public Radio and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
(OP)- Within the last year the Parents' Music Resource Center
(PMRC) has requested that record companies rate records they
produce similar to the current rating of films. You've been
involved in this recent controversy. What did the record industry
finally agree to?
(FZ)- Well, to quote you from the Associated Press Wire Report,
dated November 1, 1985, the basic points of the agreement between
the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the PMRC
are that "parents' groups will have no role in determining what
is explicit." Next, "the record companies will determine what is
explicit." When asked, "What is explicit?," Stanley Gortikov
(president of the RIAA) replied, "What's explicit is explicit."
Third, "those artists whose contracts give them control over
their packaging are free to ignore the understanding." Does this
sound like something you could enforce?
I think the record industry allowed the ladies to save a
little face (by making a formal agreement at all), which just
encourages them more. The PMRC has moved to new quarters in
Virginia; they are no longer in Washington D.C. They have a new
printed fund-raising package which heralds their victory while
omitting those parts of the agreement that render it inoperable.
The fund-raising package says that if you'll send them money,
they will send you more examples of the horrors of these lyrics.
They are making an industry out of this thing! Meanwhile,
Reverend Jeff Ling, their consultant, has this new slide show
that he is taking around.
The night before I testified in the State Senate, I attended a
cocktail party that a bunch of legislators were invited to. The
bill had already passed in the House of Delegates. My objective
in this exercise was to keep the bill from going anyplace in the
Senate because if the Senate approves the bill it becomes law.
But if you kill the bill in the Senate, it's dead. Delegates and
Senators were coming to this cocktail party. Every time somebody
would say, "Here's Delegate So-and-So," I would say, "Which way
did you vote?" And of the ones who voted for the bill, I always
asked them, "Why?" Most of them were embarrassed that they had.
And I would say, "Would you care to apologize?," and hand them a
piece of paper to get their apology in writing. I've got slips
of paper from at least five delegates who voted for the thing
with the most unbelievable quotes. I read the apologies in the
Senate the following day. Here's some quotes: "I was swept away
by the rhetoric." And "I had to vote that way because that's the
way my district is." That guy came from a district where he
might have had his legs badly mutilated if he hadn't done it.

A21.
From: eijk...@sp2.csrd.uiuc.edu (Victor Eijkhout)
In the Orange County medley on Make a Jazz Noise Here,
Frank says 'and you'll never hear vloerbedekking again'.
This must have puzzled more people than just me.

Q23. What does WPLJ stand for?
A23. WPLJ is an acronym for a "wine-cooler" type drink, that was
popular in the 40's and 50's. It is made with white port wine
and lemon juice. It also inspired the group "The Four Deuces"
to write a song about it. This song, "WPLJ", was later redone
by Zappa, and may have influenced the choice of call letters
for a New York radio station.
More data:
From: mjpa...@ATHENA.MIT.EDU (Mark Parisi)
Here's the complete chronology of WPLJ. White Port and Lemon Juice was
a popular wine cooler. A california R&B group liked the drink, so they
wrote and recorded a song about it. The group was the Four Deuces, and
the song was WPLJ, a big R&B hit on Music City Records in about 1955.
Zappa, as we all know, was a huge R&B fan, liked the song, and decided
to record it, and it showed up on Burnt Weeny Sandwich (GAWD this is
a tasty little sucker!). The studio version is much closer to the
original than the live versions. Any good oldies record store should
have the Four Deuces version in some format. I think that the WABC-FM
people changed their call letters before Zappa did his version of the
song. I remember hearing comments about "The R&B classic that became
a radio station" some time in the late sixties.
------------------------------------------------------------
From: re...@watson.ibm.com (Diane Reese)
In the '70s, a progressive FM station in New York City known as
WABC-FM changed its call letters one day to "WPLJ" -- I was listening
to them (cleaning up my bedroom, if my memory serves) the first day
they broadcast under the new call letters, and they were slyly asking
listeners to call in and tell them what we thought their call letters
stood for! The overwhelming response was, as you'd expect, "White Port
and Lemon Juice," with Zappa references abounding. Your chronology is
backwards, Zappa came first, and at least SOMEONE involved in picking
the new call letters was a fan.

Q24. Who is Francesco Zappa?
A24. There is a Frank Zappa album called "Francesco Zappa".
It is music from an (obscure) Italian composer whose name
Frank had seen somewhere, possibly Grove's Music Dictionary.
The modern-day Zappa decided to record this Baroque music
on his Synclavier and it became one of his first projects
to employ the Synclavier exclusively.
More data:
From: etx...@eua.ericsson.se (Mats eriksson)
There actually WAS a composer named Francesco Zappa living in Italy
during the Baroque-era. When I bought the album and read the text on
it I thought it was a joke. But I have found the real Francesco Zappa
mentioned in music literature (written before the album was released).
I don't know if the music on the album is composed by the real Francesco,
but if you give me some time I just might be able to verify this.
------------------------------------------------------------
From: hac...@xanth.cs.orst.edu (Dianne Hackborn)
Yes, it was composed by Francesco:
"The music of Francesco Zappa is from the collection of the Music Library
at the University of California, Berkeley."
But I still think the album should be listened to like "Cruisin' with..." :)

Q28. Was Zappa's real name "Frank" or "Francis" ?

Zappa himself thought his first name was "Francis" and had even
used it in press releases and album liner notes. He discovered
later, when he saw his birth certificate, that his real birth name
was "Frank", not "Francis".

ARTHUR BARROW
-------------
Used to be his rehearsal manager for the 1988 tour.
I thought that was Scott Thunes. Thunes was the bass player for that tour
(and several previous tours going back to the early 80's) and was in charge
of running the rehearsals {According to ZAPPA! magazine from '92}.
Last I heard of Barrow, he was touring with ex-Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger,
as was Preston, but that was some time ago.
Had a solo album 'Music for Listening ' released in 1992 on
Tom and Slev's New Masters, which has since folded, though Arthus has copies
(but I have no address for AB). Had some sort of underground rap hit late
1993 in the California area. Worked with disco king Giorgio Moroder in the
1980s (god help us).
ADRIAN BELEW
------------
After touring with FZ, Adrian toured
with the Talking Heads. He first did this because FZ had planned a break
and AB was to join FZ again when he was going to form a new band. But then
FZ changed his mind and when he put together a new band AB was still with
the Talking Heads (He's on the live album "The name of this band is..").
AB also toured with David Bowie (live album:"Stage"). He joined King Crimson
for a couple of tours and three albums ("Discipline", "Beat" and "Three of
a Perfect Pair"). After the Crimson split-up he released solo-albums and
did some studio-work (Herbie Hancock, amongst others). Solo albums :
"The lone Rhino","Desire Caught by the Tail" are the ones I remeber right now.
He has gotten back together with Robert Fripp and Tony Leven with rumors
of a New and Improved King Crimson.
JIMMY CARL BLACK
----------------
Formed Geronomo Black back in the 70's. I think thre were two albums.
Had an album out in the late 80's; called his band "The Mannish Boys";
never heard it.
Well, as I already mentioned in my post, Black, Preston and Gardner appear to
suing Zappa for his releasing the old MOI stuff without consulting
them.
Also appears on vocals on a couple of tapes by Ant Bee
(Billy James) and the Muffin Men CD 'Say Cheese and Thank You'. New
Grandmothers CD reasonably imminent, I expect.
See GRANDMOTHERS.
DALE BOZZIO
-----------
In 1990 was pregnant and sang at Zappa's Universe in New York City.
The last I heard of Dale Bozzio was the performance in '91 for Frank's birthday.
Was involved in Zappa's Universe. She sang horribly on Wet Tshirt
Night. Is she still married to Terry?
For the person who asked if Dale and Terry are still married, the answer
is no. The split at the same time as Missing Persons, which was '84 or '85.
Terry is remarried and I think Dale is too.
Also, Missing persons broke up in 1986, as did Terry and Dale's
marriage.
Dale Bozzio (two 'z''s) has a solo RIOT IN
ENGLISH.
Dale Bozzio--had a solo album under the name "Dale" called
"Riot in English" in 1988--sort of a Janet Jackson/Karyn White/
Robert Smith/Samantha Fox/Prince sounding thing.
She is remarried and has two kids. According to
her manager, she is still involved in the music business, although
I haven't heard anything about it specifically. In 1991 she toured
as "Missing Persons" and did Missing Persons songs with a hired band.
She appeared at Zappa's Universe, which was for Frank's 50th
birthday--eleven months late--it was held in Nov. 1991, not 1990.
She sang "Fembot in a Wet T-shirt" and did the Mary speech from
"Packard Goose,"modifying it slightly to say "Music...and Frank
Zappa...are the best."
TERRY BOZZIO
------------
The ground breaking news on Terry Bozzio is that he has just done some work
with Duran Duran in the studio, recording, "Here Comes Success" (Iggy Pop
tune). This has made a lot of us DD/FZ/Missing Persons fans very happy, as
Duran hasn't had a stable drummer in many a year. Terry is a welcome addition
even if it is only a quick stint.
Bozzio is in a band at the moment called Lonely Bears with Hymas etc.,
the 3rd CD is due out at any time the first two CDs are superb
you can get them at G&S Music 0442 63287
TERRY BOZZIO is working in lotsa groups, and played on Jeff Beck's killer
GUITAR SHOP CD. Also toured with Jeff. Still has an edge.
Toured with Jeff Beck and is now touring with someone else, um, I
forget who though. I think he might be touring with Steve Vai's
current band.
Terry Bozzio is right now(?) on tour with Vai, a band presently consisting
of Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio, T.M. Stevens (bass), and Devin Townsend (vocals).
Has played on Jeff Becks "Guitar Shop" album and Steve Vai's,
"Sex and Religion."
NAPOLEAN MURPHY BROCK
---------------------
Joined the George Duke band in the late 70s, and recorded a few albums.
Supposedly seen in Newcastle (England) in 1989 or
1990, where he had been talking to Kitchenware Records about a solo album,
which apparently came to nothing. After leaving the music biz, he went in to
raising dogs (good occupation for an ex-Zappa player; don't know how many
poodles he got through).
CHUNKY
------
Nobody seems to remember Ilene Rapaport, aka Chunky. I'd be interested in
hearing what she is doing now. She had a band called Chunky, Novi and Ernie
in the 70s who played around North Hollywood. Novi played with Zappa I
believe during that period as well (she is a violist, and I forget her
name). Ernie was the token male in the band, on bass.
I'm not sure if he ever actually played with Zappa, but another violist,
Danny Seidenberg, who may have participated in some Zappa projects, is now
in Turtle Island. Does he appear on any recordings?
VINNIE COLAIUTA
---------------
I think I read something about Vinnie Colaiuta had been doing some work
for Duran Duran. What then happened to him?
I recently heard that Vinnie Colaiuta is touring with Sting.
Vinnie played drums for Sting on his latest (?) tour.
Vinnie is doing the current tour w/Sting. They were spotted on TV in
Europe. VC did the last Sting tour in '91 which was damn good.
Drums not only on Joni Mitchell's 'Mingus' but also on the
much better 'Wild Things Run Fast'
He also drummed on Jennifer Warnes' 1986 album Famous Blue Raincoat.
As far as I remember now, he played on a few tracks on the latest
"The The" Album.
He plays with Sting now. I saw it on TV last week. He is still great,
although I feel he doesn't really het a change to show off that great
accompanying (sp.??) style of drumming that made it work so good with
Frank's music.
Vinnie C. plays on Joni Mitchells "Wild Things Run Fast" (1982) and
"Dog Eat Dog" (1985). Perhaps on later albums as well, but I'm pretty
sure he didn't play on earlier albums. He left FZ in 1982. I remember
reading an interview in which Vinnie says that his first real studio
job was Al Kooper "Championship Wrestling", which was released in 1982.
Appears on a few tracks on most of the Allan Holdsworth albums released in
the last decade or so. So does Chad Wackerman.
Vinnie Colaiuta has
been playing with Joni Mitchell but it certainly wasn't on Mingus, the album
mentioned in the FAQ. I believe he's in the "Refuge of the Road" video.
I'll check out my JM albums this weekend and let you know what albums
Vinnie's on. I think (not sure) it's on "Dog Eat Dog" and the one before
that (forgotten title).
The drummer from on Mingus might be John Guerin. John Guerin and
bass player Max Bennett were both in Tom Scotts band that backed Joni
in the Early seventies. They can be heard on "Miles of Aisles".
Guerin, Bennett and Tom Scott appear on Mitchells solo records from the
mid seventies. Now here's the link to Zappa : Bennett and Guerin have been
working with Zappa. I don't have the albums here right now but if memory serves
they appear on "Chunga's Revenge" and on "King Kong, Jean-Luc Ponty plays the
music of FZ".
RAY COLLINS
-----------
Released a cassette of demos in 1993, called 'Love Songs'. Also
an album of demos in 1981(?) on Polar Records (he says from memory). An odd
character; apparently hates Zappa's guts.
I think he is briefly in "Video From Hell". Goes something like:
Collins: Is that thing recording
Zappa: No.
Collins: You're lying, the tape recorder is ALWAYS going.
...
Collins: Zappa's dishing out the shit, one more time...
It's rather funny, if I could remember at all how it went. :)
WARREN CUCCURULLO
-----------------
Warren Cuccurullo (please note spelling, it is correct, no matter
what the liner notes say...)--in case anyone wondered what he is doing
now, he is in Duran Duran and has completely turned their sound around
and brought them into a whole new level of music. He has been with
them since 1986, and has been a full member since June 1989. The
Duran fans are being very slow to accept him, but I have won a few
converts. I am searching desperately for ANY audio or video of him
with Frank Zappa--he was in the 1979 Europe tour and also on Oct
27, 1978, he performed "Ms. X." I have this on audio; however,
I would LOVE to have it on video, if any of you could help me at
all. I would love to discuss Ms. X as well, as I'm sure most of
you know it exists, and I am a bit wary of discussing it with the
Duranies. Also, Warren has a fan club, which I founded in July,
and there is a bimonthly newsletter just about him (each member
of DD has his own club and newsletter, and there are 12 DD clubs).
We also talk quite a bit about Missing Persons and Frank Zappa
in the newsletter.
if anyone has any info or would like any info about Warren, please
e-mail me at cgl...@vunet.vinu.edu. I would really like to "meet"
others who know who he is and appreciate his talents.
Thank you for your time. Please remember to e-mail me directly--
thanks. Or send paper mail to the club or to me at the following

ANSLEY DUNBAR
-------------
Released "Blue Whale" in 1970 with a cover of "Willy the Pimp"
Starship? Or did he quit?
Quit a long time ago.
Last I heard, he was with Jefferson Ratsship. I don't even know if
they exist now.
I think Aynsley Dunbar was in Journey for a time. Poor lad.
Yes, but that was pre-schlock (read: pre-Perry) Journey. Their first
album was actually pretty good -- sort of heavy fusion-influenced rock.
No, he was in the schlock late 70's band, not in the original lineup.
I believe there was a rumour Aynsley Dunbar was sexually involved with minors
what got him into some kind of trouble .
There is a band called Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation with a three albums
(according to holonet).I'm not sure from what era they are.
Aynsley Dunbar RETALIATION. From the late 60's/early 70's.
I have no idea what the music was like, or who he was retaliating
against. The ads for his albums (remember vinyl?) used to appear on a lot of
record sleeves in the early 70's.
Has a new release, Ansley Dunbars' Retribution. Don't know nothing about it.
TONY DURAN
----------
Found on the "For Real" by Ruben and the Jets album mentioned in some posts.
ROY ESTRADA
-----------
Formed Little Feat with Lowell George. Was in band for first couple of
albums.
Last played with Zappa around 1979(around Baby Snakes time).
He of course spent several productive years in the Magic Band, under the
pseudonym Orejon.
There is the possibility of a cassette release of demos by Roy
on Billy James' Electric Yak Records out of North Carolina. Will post again
if I hear anything.
FLO and EDDIE
-------------
Reunited the Turtles a year or two back and did a 20th or 25th anniversary
tour (or maybe even a 30th anniversary?).
Oops, I should have included Flo and Eddie in the news about being in the
studio with Terry and Duran Duran. Apparently they did backing vocals. This
is all verified information from Warren Cuccurullo himself.
Flo and Eddie were also the afternoon drive-time DJs at WXRK-FM
("K-Rock" -- Howard Stern's home station) in New York for a while, about
a year ago. Anybody know why they left the airwaves?
I really don't think they were cut out for that industry. Probably the
stresses were too much for them, and I don't expect they liked living in
New York. Howard thought they were idiots and used to poke fun at them
a lot (lucky for them they weren't in competition).
One snippet had two Flo & E impersonators talking about what washed up
boring has-been rock stars from the 70's they could call today. One of
them suggested the guitarrist from Blodwyn Pig. I died laughing.
Just bought a cd of recent live music by the TURTLES... aka Flo & Eddie this
week. I think it has a date of 1992 or 1993. I'll look it up and post it
tomorrow... It contains the old Turtles hits like Happy Together, Elanoire
(sp), and others... The white hair and beard look - - - different - but the
voices are still the same.
They have been doing The Bottom Line in NYC for the last umteen years on New
Years. I saw them last year and two years before that as well. Excellent show.
They usually do a little segment on the Zappa years, but most of the show is
Turtles material (which is nice, but after a while, it takes on an oldies show
feel). They usually do the Sanzini Brothers. A bit slower than on the Illegal
Immoral and Fattening album, but still worth while. Last year they did a long
Nikki Hoi segment. I have a homebrew bootleg of the show from 90-91. They did a
Batman spoof in the beginning, and a Menudo spoof after the intermission.
I think I will try to make it to the Flo and Eddy New Years show this year too,
if my fiance doesn't mind seeing them again. Or seeing a show which might turn
into a eulegy
After leaving the Mothers, they released at least 5 albums with
the name Flo and Eddie.
1- The Phlorescent Leech and Eddie (1972)
2- Flo and Eddie (1973)
3- Illegal, Immoral and Fattening (1975)
4- Moving Targets (1976)
5- Rock Steady with Flo and Eddie (1981)
#4, Moving Targets, contained the song "Keep it Warm" which had quite a bit
of airplay.
#5, Rock Steady, was re-released in 1987 by Rhino records as "Prince Flo &
Jah Edward." This contains a reggae version of Happy Together!
Rhino also put out a compilation CD in 1987 called "The Best of Flo &
Eddie," which contained tracks from the first 4 albums above, plus songs
from the movies "Dirty Ducks" and "Texas Detour." Flo and Eddie have done
lots of soundtrack and backing vocal work. (They sing backup in the song
"Bang a gong.")
#3, Illegal Immoral and Fattening, was recently released on CD.
Also a disk called "The Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie Captured Live" was
released by Rhino in 1992.
>The names Flo and Eddie have a nice ring to them and they seem to have
>stuck.
Flo and Eddie have played at the Bottom Line in New York practically every
New Year's Eve weekend that I can remember since the mid 70's. On one of
these occasions in the late 70's, Frank Zappa showed up and played a few
songs with them. Last year at the Bottom Line they did a large chunk of
side one of We're only in it for the Money for "all the Zappa fans out
there," which was odd because they didn't sing on that album. Most of the
audience had no idea what was going on, but they did a great job.
Flo and Eddie became quite well known in New York several years ago when
they did an afternoon radio show on WXRK (K-Rock) every day after Howard
Stern. This was before Stern became nationally known.
Isn't it amazing how a couple of guys can put out so much stuff and nobody
has ever heard of them? On that note let me leave you with a quote from
the lyrics to the song "Mama, Open Up" from the album "Moving Targets" -
from memory, the lyrics are not printed on the album:
Motel rooms and flying tombs
and food I couldn't chew
from the Filmore to the Whitehouse
chasing fame
But no one hears my records
and the roof is leaking too
after all these years
my life appears in vain
They still say just one hit
and you're doing fine
but I'm bored with the game
and I'm short on time
I want to end it
Mama! Open Up! I'm coming back in!
I don't like it out here no more
I'm overweight
I'm underpaid
No one's beating a path to my door
One thing not mentioned is that they do a New Years show at The Bottom Line in
NYC every year for the past 16 years or so. Every year they play a small medly
of Frank's stuff, but I have a feeling they will do more of a tribute to Frank
this year.
>Flo and Eddie
And if you think about it, flow and eddy are two things that water does...
pretty neat pun huh?
I can't believe no one here has mentioned the movie Dirty Duck. Has no one here
ever seen this? It's an animated movie by Flo and Eddie with the songs Cheap as
the movie theme (now this is a cheap little movie), Karma Sutra Time, We're
Living in a Jungle and a few others.
There is a great scene where they are talking about how the main character was
turned into a duck. The scene takes place in the desert. They are sitting by
the side of the raod waiting for a car to come by so they can catch a lift. The
two characters, Eisenbaum and the Duck are played by Flo and Eddie.
The following is from memory:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eisenbaum: So, how did you become a duck, man?
Duck: Well, originally I was a turtle, but frankly my mother invented
a way for me to become a duck, so I just kinda flowed into it.
Eisenbaum: Oh Eddy you must be kidding.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the Duck mentions Frank,s name, a drawing of Frank's face rises up on the
horizon like the sun (ala Terry Gilliam/Monty Python animation) and raises it's
eyebrows or something. It sets when Eisenbaum says 'Eddy you must be kidding'.
The movie is more bizarre than 200 Motels, and some parts are a real drag to
watch if you've seen it already. But there are some parts that are so funny, we
were ROLLING!
I haven't seen it in a few years. I lent it to a friend who moved to
California, and probably will never see that copy again. Believe it or not, I
found the movie (which I copied) in the children's section of the video store.
Flo & Eddie also did backup vocals on the Alice Cooper album _From the Inside_.
For you completists out there (I haven't seen this mentioned yet),
Flo & Eddie did the prominent background vocals on Springsteen's
"Hungry Heart".
THE FOWLER'S
------------
The FOWLERs have a recent CD on a small/vanity label. Haven't heard it.
I recently obtained their first solo album (1985) and I like it a lot.
Three Fowlers have solo releases.
The Fowlers appeared behind Stan Ridgway's vocals on "The Cannon Song"
in the Kurt Weill/Bert Brecht tribute album, Lost In The Stars.
Has a disk out with most of the brass/woodwind section of the '88 band
titled BREAKFAST FOR DINOSAURS.
Bruce Fowler play on:
Woody Herman -- Somewhere, 1969 w/ Bill Chase, Sal Nistico, Ronnie Cuber
(who is on FZ's "In New York")
Joey Sellars -- Something for Nothing, 1989 w/ Kei Akagi
Bruce has two solo CDs: 'Ants Can Count' ~very strange and
experimental) and 'Entropy' (more straightahead jazz-rock). Tom has a solo
release 'Heartscapes' which sounds a bit like Level 42. Walt has a solo CD
due for release soon. Bruce also plays on an album (soon to be a CD) with
Phil Teele called shit I can't remember. Fowler Brothers have two out:
'Hunter' and 'Breakfast for Dinosaurs'. Steve Fowler also has two releases:
'Captured' and 'The Last Blue Sky'. Most of this stuff (except 'Ants Can
Count' on Terra Nova Records) is on the Brothers' own Fossil Records. Some
of them were also in a band called Airpocket who had albums released in
Japan, I believe.
Bruce Fowler appears in the Robert Altman film Short Cuts, which
is currently showing, at least in NYC. Bruce has the part of the
trombone player, oddly enough, in a small jazz combo in an LA
nightclub called the Low Note. He's in quite a few scenes
throughout the movie, and is seen and heard playing the
trombone, but has no spoken lines. The movie has an all-star
cast; among the other musicians in the film are Tom Waits and
Huey Lewis, who both have substantial speaking roles.
Bruce is on Chad Wackerman's latest, The View.
BRUCE FOWLER / ENTROPY
"See and hear BRUCE FOWLER featured in the award-winning film, SHORT
CUTS ... And hear his acclaimed new CD, ENTROPY ...
Bruce Fowler: Trombone and Words
Steve Fowler: Also Sax, Flute
Tom Fowler: Acoustic Bass, Violin
Walt Fowler: Trumpet, Flugelhorn
Albert Wing: Tenor Sax
Chester Thompson: Drums
Billy Childs: Piano
Kei Akagi: Piano
Kurt McGettrick: Baritone Sax, Eb Contrabass Clarinet
Phil Teele: Bass Trombone
Suzette Moriarty: French Horn
SUGARCANE HARRIS
----------------
I haven't seen anything from SUGARCANE HARRIS in years, but he's no spring
chicken anymore. I did see lots of his jazz/blues albums from the 70's
on a German label in a used record store in New Orleans recently, and now I'm
sorry I didn't buy them.
Somebody told me a couple of years ago that Sugercane had died. I hope
I'm wrong on this one.
I got to see him in LA (Long Beach actually?) in the early 70s. I've lost
my memory of this but it may have been with Dewey (his original pairing,
Don and Dewey - cf. Freak Out). I love his Epic album Sugarcane (E30027),
produced by Johnny Otis, with a back cover by Rick Griffin. A wonderful
musician. I used to live in his little house.
BUNK GARDNER
------------
Is a member of the "Grandmothers" (or was it Buzz ?) currently touring in
Europe. Also in this band are Jimmy Carl Black and Don Preston.
LOWELL GEORGE
-------------
Appeared on the GTO's album, "Permanent Damage"
Formed Little Feat with Roy Estrada.
Passed away in 1978, shortly after his album "Thanks, I'll Eat It Here"
came out.
New CD with old stuff (pre-Little Feat) released in
1993 - "Lightning Rod Man"
EDDIE JOBSON
------------
Before joining FZ Jobson had played in Curved Air and Roxy Music and had done
various studio dates / guest apearances (sp?). After leaving FZ he formed
"UK" together with Bill Bruford, Allan Holdsworth and John Wetton.
After the first album (called "UK") Holdsworth and Bruford left. Bruford
was replaced by none other than Terry Bozzio. In this line up they recorded
"Danger Money" and "Night after Night", a live album. "UK" split up
in december '79. Jobson then joined Jethro Tull for an album (called "A") and
a tour. In '83 he recorded "The Green Album" as a member of "Zinc" a band put
together by Jobson. Since then he's been doing commercials, writing scores
for TV showes and synth-programming. Released one solo album called "Theme of
Secrets". (1985)
(Thanks to Ron Chrisley who suplied part of this information)
Anyway, while flipping though the TV last
Friday night, I caught the end credits of the NBC show "Viper". Nothing
big, except when I saw "Music composed by Eddie Jobson". I couldn't
believe it. For those who don't know, he is on Zappa's "Live In New York"
CD. I had no idea what he was up to nowadays, so I was glad to see he is
still around. A side note, this guy has also played with Yes, Jethro
Tull, U.K., and a few other bands. Very versatile guy.
MIKE KENEALLY
-------------
Has a solo album out called "Hat", was part of the "Z" band.
Released an album recently. Also plays on "Z" featuring Zappa's male children.
Solo stuff, released Hat (or will soon be releasing it). Helped
organize Zappa's Universe back in 91 and probably was involved in
the post production of the CD/Video.
MICHAEL KENYON
--------------
This entry is here for the "completists". Michael Kenyen is the infamous
Illinois Enema Bandit. Per the news account:
"Michael H. Kenyon, 30, the suspected enema bandit who terrorized
coeds at the University of Illinois for 10 years, has pleaded
guilty in Urbana, Ill., to six counts of armed robbery. He has
admitted administering enemas to woman victims in at least three
of the six robberies."
FZ wrote "The Illinois Enema Bandit" as a ??tribute?? to this
upstanding citizen.
Where is he now? Who the hell knows!
DAVID LOGEMAN
-------------
So, whatever became of David "I forget your name even though you've been
in the band..." Logeman? Where did he play previously? This guy was the
right drummer for the vocal-oriented songs which dominated the
Spring/Summer '80 tour. When came to killer instrumental improvs
well...IMHO, his chops sounded like variations on "Shave & A Haircut".
ED MANN
-------
Has a few solo releases and was (is ?) a member of the "Repercussion Unit"
a band of 6 percussion players.
Released an album around 1990 or so (forget the name)
featuring Fowler Bros.
He teaches percussion at CalArts. I had a friend who went there and I
think Ed was one of his advisors.
Ed Mann hast at least two solo releases (early 90s) "Get Up" and
"Perfect World".
Have released a couple of jazzy disk on CMP (?).
SAL MARQUEZ
-----------
Has a solo release (92 ?) out called "One for Dewey". A tribute to
Miles Dewey Davis, and the music is 50s/60s -Davis like. He's also
a member of the GRP big band who released an album 1 or 2 years ago.
(His solo album is on GRP too).
Like real, *real* Davis-like. Marquez does a convincing copy, even if that's
pretty much old hat these days.
Sal is currently a member of the Tonight Show Band with Branford
Marsalis. Got a haircut for the gig.
TOMMY MARS
----------
Played kbds. on Vai's "Flexable" CD. No later news.
Toured Europe with Ed Mann in 1992 and was talking about making
an album with him. Never happened as far as I know. Shame. Makes brief
appearance on Vai's 'Flex-Able Leftovers' or the US 'Flex-Able' CD, playing
violin (what a talent!).
BILLY MUNDI
-----------
Formed a group called Rhinoceros in the early seventies. Cross
between early Chicago and R&B.
If anyone finds out where Billy Mundi is, please tell Jimmy
Carl Black who wants to get in touch with him!
PATRICK O'HEARN
---------------
Patrick O'Hearn has been releasing albums on his own. At least one of
these albums, "River's gonna rise", with the help of Terry Bozzio and
Warren Cucurrullo(?).
Patrick O'Hearn solo career--he has in fact had several albums,
and both Terry Bozzio and Warren Cuccurullo have helped on some. I know
in particular that Warren helped on Rivers Gonna Rise, Indigo, and the
White Sands Soundtrack
Released a bunch of New Age stuff. Apparently used to keep in touch
with Zappa due to Zappa's use of an instrument called a "Roland
Octapad." (1990 time frame).
Last night I began reading a screenplay named "Silent Tongue" by playwright
and actor Sam Shepard (acting credits include "The Right Stuff", "Country"),
and the title page credits Patrick O'Hearn for music.
JIM PONS
--------
JEAN LUC PONTY
--------------
Released many jazz albums, some of which are:
"Jean Luc-Ponty Experience" - 1969
Live with the George Duke Trio
Dick Berk - Drums

John Guerin, Ernie Watts, Buell Neidlinger, Don Cristieb
FZ plays guitar on "How Would You Like To Have A Head Like That"
"Aurora" - 1976
Darryl Stuermer - guitar
Patrice Rushen - keyboards
Tom Fowler - bass
Norman Fearrington - drums

Allan Zavod - keyboards
Tom Fowler - bass
Mark Craney - drums
"Tchokola"
(or a reasonalbe facsimile thereof).
"No Absolute Time"
with the same band of West African
musicians as on "Tchokola".
DON PRESTON
-----------
Don played synthesizer about five years ago on John Carter's Castles
of Ghana (it may be the album after that in the series--I'd have to check)
on Grammavision. He personally got rave reviews for his soloing. However,
that band never toured (Carter died last year) and I haven't heard from him
since.
Saw Don Preston playing with Robbie Krieger (Doors) at a small club
in Hollywood in the late 70's. They were playing stuff similar to Jeff Beck
and Jan Hammer (Blow By Blow - Wired).
Don Preston did a jazz/rock/flamenco album with Robby Krieger of The Doors.
Some time in the early eighties I went to see The Carla Bley Band at
the Paradise Club in Boston and was pleasantly suprised to see Don
Preston in the band.
P.S. Don Preston is also on an album by trumpeter Michael Mantler (husband
of Carla Bley?) named "Live", with Jack Bruce.
Black, Preston and Gardner appear to be in a band called the Grandmothers.
Don Preston appeared on the Mike Mantler release ALIEN on ECM/Watt around
1988 or so. I think he still plays with Mantler on occasion.
Don played in the LA Art Ensemble or whatever it was called, with people
like Buell Neidlinger and other hip CalArts types. He also played in Gil
Evans band. He was very good at transforming.
Played on:
Carla Bley -- Escalator Over the Hill, 1968-71 w/ Don Cherry, Jack Bruce,
John McLaughlin, Charlie Haden, Linda Ronstadt
Michael Mantler -- Alien, 1985 (already mentioned?)
Bobby Bradford -- Comin' On, 1988 w/ John Carter, Richard Davis, Andrew
Cyrille
John Carter -- Fields, 1988 (part of the "Roots and Folklore" series
already mentioned in other postings that includes "Shadows on a Wall")
An excellent solo album 'Vile Foamy Ectoplasm' out on Muffin
Records in Germany. Just moved out to Germany as well, where he lives near
Jimmy Carl Black (also resident in Germany) and is still a Grandmo~er. A
video from 19fi8 'Dr Ogo Moto' is also due soon for release, again I think
on Muffin; maybe on Electric Yak in the US.
Saw a cheezy Sci-Fi flick called "Android" on the Sci-Fi Channel the other
day. Don Preston was credited with the music. Nothing very distinctive,
but I have to admit that the film was so bad it seriously detracted from
listening very closely to the music. Not even "Cheepnis"-grade sci-fi.
No idea how old the movie was; mid-to-late 70's I would guess.
Don has been working with composer/trumpeter Michael Mantler for awhile.
Check out "Alien" and "Michael Mantler Live" on the Watt/ECM label. Sorta a
hybrid between modern jazz and modern classical music, with Don doing
orchestrations on synths. On the live album Jack Bruce sings and Nick Mason
(PF) drums as well, sorta old home week for aging art-rockers 8^)
Don also contributed heavily to the last few John Carter releases (mostly
on Gramavision) before Carter passed away in the early 90's. Carter was a
pioneering composer, saxophonist and clarinetist who worked extensively
with Bobby Bradford, a cornetist who has played with Ornette Coleman
amongst others.
In the liner notes of one of the Carter releases, he dubbed Don Preston
the "father of modern synthesis."
Yeah, shouldn't that have been *mother*? It was on "Shadows on a Wall", the
last in the series.
I particularly recommend the live set, which is not on Gramavision, but
Hat Art. Don really gets to stretch out (on synth and piano)....and
basically, it's one of the most awesome "out" jazz records ever made.
L. SHANKAR
----------
Continues to play a combination of pop and classical Indian music
and fusion.
Has been playing with Peter Gabriel since the mid 80's, and appeared on
the Tonight Show several months ago with PG's band. He and bass player
Tony Levin performed a silly dance during one of the songs.
JEFF SIMMONS
------------
SCOTT THUNES
------------
Zappas Universe, "Z" (see Mike Knealy)
Recently seen playing with the Waterboys on British TV.
Also recently, I saw Steve Vai on MTV introducing his new band. He had Scott
on bass. Scott also played in Z.
ART TRIPP
---------
In an interview with FZ (around 1984) he (FZ) said that he was an insurance
salesman now.
Yeah, he moved back here to where he grew up and joined his father's
business, and I think developed a commercial real estate business out of it
as well.
I talked to him some years back, and then tried to get a hold of him more
recently without success. I finally reached somebody at the business number
who told me after a pause that he had passed away. I was quite shocked to
hear this, but later realized that I hadn't been clear and she must have
meant his father. Gerry Pratt says he is now a chiropractor and Gerry has
some other more recent info I believe. I wonder if he still has his chops.
IAN UNDERWOOD
-------------
Ian works a lot in the movie business. You'll see his name in
film credits and recording credits once in a while. Often, things like
"Synthesizer prepared by:".
Does some studio producing and synth programming. Recently produced
(or helped produce) a Quincy Jones album including synth programming
and hand clapping of all things.
I saw his name in the credit titles of the film "The Name of the Rose",
under "synthesizer programming".
Showed up in the credits of a recent Quincy Jones album (1990?)
Showed up in the credits of the film "Sneakers" as a featured musician
along with Joel Peskin (Waka/Jawaka)
Played on:
Lenox School of Jazz Concert, 1959 w/ Ornette Coleman, Herb Pomeroy
John Handy -- Where Go the Boats w/ Lee Ritenour
Make sure you are sitting down before you read any further.
OK? ................................ OK.
He played keyboards for ...
<cringe>
..................................*Barry Manilow* <AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHH!>... in the late 70's.
RUTH UNDERWOOD
--------------
I wish I knew. Whatever did happen to Ruth? Is she still married
to Ian? Why isn't she playing in some band or orchestra?
I know somebody (X) who purportedly knows Ruth's Parents.
According to X, Ruth now goes by her maiden name, no longer
performs, and is raising her children somewhere in
the vicinity of San Francisco.
>From a recent interview: "A couple of years ago, when I heard that
Frank was ill, I called him up. For 14 years we had no contact at all.
He invited me to the house and we enjoyed some really nice visits with
each other. Last June ('93) he called and asked if he could sample some
of my stuff. I was shocked because I hadn't touched a pair of mallets
since March of '77. I ended up practicing for 14 hours, which was all the
time I could get together in the context of my life now. I spent four
days at Frank's house sampling. This was really a miracle for me - that
I could be reunited with him and still have something to offer."
STEVE VAI
---------
Been active. Releasing albums regularly.
A great album with Vai in it is the one he did with the group Alcatrazz
called Disturbing the Peace.
does anyone out there know what's gonna happen with the project that steve vai
mentioned in sept.guitar world ,That is him ,bozzio + the ensemble moderne
playing frank's 'complicated' stuff(i.e 'black page')in fall 94.
CHAD WACKERMAN
--------------
Chad's got a new CD out under his own name. Haven't heard it.
Releasing solo stuff. Has 2 CDs. His band includes Alan Holdsworth
on guitar and I think Jeff Berlin on bass. He also has been doing
back-up drumming for a variety of people in the studio including
Ed Mann, Fowler Brothers, and he also appeared a few years back as
drummer to Barbara Streisand!
Plays with Allan Holdsworth. Recently released an album with
Fowler Bros. on it.
Chad was in the house band on the ill fated (of course, it was a great
show) Dennis Miller Show. One nite Miller decided to give the band the
name "The Wackermen".
Chad Wackerman plays on Andy Summers' jazzy album "Charming Snakes".
Have released a couple of jazzy disk on CMP (?).
Chad Wackerman was just in Salt Lake City, drumming for John Tesh (The
Entertainment Tonight guy).
I saw a Chad Wackerman CD called "Forty Reasons" in a used record
shop. It features Allan Holdsworth on guitar. Any thoughts?
It's really good, at least if you're a drummer. :) It's all instrumental,
somewhere in the jazz/rock domain, quite a bit of improvisation, very tight
playing. I don't think the composing is very awe-inspiring, but the
playing certainly is.
[But what is even better are Ed Mann's CDs, especially "Get Up."]
Co-incidentally, I only logged on today to post about the new CW CD
that apparently has the same line-up as FORTY REASONS. From an ad in
JAZZIZ, Dec/Jan 1994:
CHAD WACKERMAN, the view (CMP CD 64)
~~~~~~~~
Long time Zappa drummer Chad Wackerman reassembles the virtuosic
band that burned through his solo debut, Forty Reasons (CMP 48) for
an intense set of hip, intelligent electric-jazz. Jimmy Johnson,
bass and Jim Cox, keyboards return in support of Wackerman along
with trumpeter Walt Fowler guitarist Carl Verheyen and guest soloist
Allan Holdsworth.
DENNY WALLEY
------------
Currently attending Kindergarten.
ERNIE WATTS
-----------
I haven't seen anyone mention that Ernie Watts used to play with
the Tonight Show Band (Johnny Carson)
RAY WHITE
---------
What ever happened to him ???? I was told FZ tried to get in touch with him
a few years ago but didnt succeed.
Ike says that Ray's been playing down around Oakland. Ike's brother,
who lives down there, stay's in closer touch with Ray, than Ike does.
I wondered why Ray was absent from TBBYNHIYL. Anyway, Ike spoke with
shortly before Frank left. I'd like to see Ike and Ray work together
again.
Ike will probably tour Europe, Spring '94, fronting a British band,
"The Muffin Men", who have a CD of FZ covers, that sounds like
"pretty good musicians". They are sincere fans. Very sincere.
Now, maybe, if they could get Ray, too.
Actually, in an interview with Frank, I read that the reason that Ray wasn't
in the group was because he was religious and took offense at some of
Zappa's music.
I have a Cd and a tape of the muffin men. They are quite good and do
try to put a little spin on Zappa's stuff as well. They usually
succeed too.
IKE WILLIS
----------
Solo band out in Oregon or Washington (state).
Plays live around Portland, Oregon.. Ask Ms. Hackborn for details.
ALBERT WING
-----------
Appeared on Breakfast for Dinosaurs and The Hunter by the Fowler
Brothers. Also wrote a few of the songs on those albums.
ALAN ZAVOD
----------
Alan Zavod had been playing keyboards for Jean-Luc Ponty before
joining FZ.
CAPTAIN BEEFHEART
-----------------
Could someone confirm if Don Van Vliet is still out
in Trinidad California?
Don moved away from Trinidad many years ago. He built another house in the
woods in Big Sur, but has since moved back to the desert. Gerry Pratt said
he was going to be feted in Europe around now, but I haven't heard anything
recently about his actual whereabouts.
MALLARD
-------
Mallard were the Magic Band after they left Beefheart in 1974 - with
Bill Harkleroad (ZHR), Mark Boston (RM), John French (Drumbo) and
Art Trip III (Ed Marimba). John French was going to be the vocalist
but bottled out - so they bought in gruff-voiced John Thomas (I think
that is the name). Released two albums - first one recorded in England
with the help of Jethro Tull was issued in UK/Europe only:-
1975 UK Mallard on Virgin V2045
Second more Country Rock was issued in UK and US:-
1976 UK In A Different Climate on Virgin V2077
1976 US In A Different Climate on Virgin PZ34489
I was told in the summer that this stuff was going to come out on CD.
SR.Was there a Mothers off-shoot band called Mallard?
No, they were what happened to Captain Beefhearts post-'Clear Spot'
Magic Band. They made two pretty dismal records and folded.
Mark Boston and Bill Harkleroad (Rockette Morton and Zoot Horn Rollo) did
this, along with Art Tripp and perhaps Roy Estrada (?).
GRANDMOTHERS
------------
Well, as I already mentioned in my post, Black, Preston and Gardner appear to
be in a band called the Grandmothers. It is a band which is made up of
changing members, but the three I mentioned form the base of it. What they
sound like, or what their intentions are, I do not know. They played in
Amsterdam on december the 7th.
Plays in a group called the "Grandmothers." Last I heard they were
A short time ago, I saw a new CD by the Grandmothers. The only member of
the Grandmothers who was in the oringinal Mothers was Jimmy Carl Black.
So there was no Gardner and no Preston.
It is a band which is made up of changing members, but the three I
mentioned form the base of it. What they sound like, or what their
intentions are, I do not know. They played in Amsterdam on december the 7th.
Black. Preston and Gardner *were* in Amsterdam though. Did you actually hear
this Granny-CD?
Black (of all persons) also appeared on MTV (yuck) on december the 7th. He
still seamed to be a bit pissed that Frank broke up the Mothers in 1969. But
hey, even he would have to admit that ALL the other drummers in the
following line-ups were better then him?!
( Sorry, I forgot my name. Remco)
But on a Dutch station JCB said that playing with Frank was the best
thing that ever happened to him. Didn't sound pissed to me.
Buzz Gardner or Don Preston said (forgot which one) said that Frank was
like a father figure to him, but that , like with his own father, they didn't
seem to communicate very well.
MERIDIAN ARTS ENSEMBLE
----------------------
For those who haven't heard: the Meridian Arts Ensemble is a very talented
and innovative brass quintet, intent on expanding the repertoire, often
commissioning new works. Comparison to the Kronos Quartet is inevitable,
especially now that MAE has thrown their rendition of "Purple Haze" into the
ring.
BTW, I'm a composer (John Halle), not the horn player. They do a piece of
mine on the disc. Hope this helps get the word out.
The Meridians will play at the Kitchen in NYC on Jan 7. They will play
an all Beefheart-Zappa set.
Those of you searching for this tasty little morsel, keep looking. I
found it at a local Tower Records under Misc Brass in the Classical
section. The Zappa tunes are:
Big Swifty
Harry, You're a Beast
The Orange County Lumber Truck
T'mershi Duween
and Dupree's Paradise.
These are just the first 5 out of 20 cuts on the disk. It took me a while
to hear the rest of the tunes on account of I had to play this delightful
suite about six times before going on. It is GREAT! The following quote
is from the liner notes: "On March 12,1993 the Meridian Arts Ensemble
performed these pieces for Mr. Zappa at his home in Los Angeles. The
composer worked with us by critiquing the performance, making corrections
in the arrangements, and giving suggestions for further interpretations.
...We feel very fortunate to have worked with him, and to have received
his support for our continuing to adapt his work for this ensemble."
This is a brass quintet with a drummer/percussionist added. The disk is 72
minutes long. (DDD) So... What are you waiting for? Log out and go find it!
THE MISSING PERSONS
-------------------
Perhaps there should be an entry in the "Zappa related bands" section for
Missing Persons. The band had Dale & Terry Bozzio, Warren C. and Patrick
O'Hearn in it plus Chuck Wild on keyboards. They released two albums plus a
best of.. . The first one was called "Spring Session M" (forgot to look which
year it was released).
The Missing Persons album "Spring Session M" was released in 1982.
THE MUFFIN MEN
--------------
Great googly moogly,
The Muffin Men are a group of musically talented Zappa fans from
Liverpool. I have been lucky enough to see them twice, and would
describe them as the second best band you've never heard in your life.
They don't attempt Zappa's killer compositions like The Black Page but I
think that they're working up to it. Their performances are full to the
brim of raw, unbridled bafoonery in addition to the superb music. They
may be supporting the Grandmothers on their European tour.
Their debut album "Say Cheese and Thank You" has just been released on
CD. It features "Peaches", "Cosmik Debris", "Andy/Inca Roads" medley,
"The Big Medley" (probably "Oh no, let's make the Harry turn Orange"),
"Let's Move To Cleveland", "Yo Mama", "Willie The Pimp" (with Tonto
Jimmy Carl Black on vocals) and a "sick" version of "Muffin Man". It's
available from Rod Gilliard, 198 Edge Ln, Liverpool L7 5NA, UK for 12
crisp pounds and 50 new pence. (Information from T'Mershi Duween the UK
Zappa fanzine.)
The band lacked a strong vocalist but now Ike's in...Ho-fuckin-rah!
This discography is not ultimate. I'm absolutely sure that Zappa Family
Trust will release many albums in the future, at least "Civilisation Phase
III" and maybe "The Lost Episodes" and some live material. There's a lot of
material 'lurking in the vault'. The dates given are day/month/year.
===================================================
Barking Pumpkin/Honker Video has released a (small) number
of Frank Zappa videos:
1. Baby Snakes
2. The True Story of 200 Motels.
3. Does Humor Belong in Music?
4. The Amazing Mr. Bickford
5. Video From Hell
6. Uncle Meat
7. Dub Room Special
8. Zappa's Universe (released September 1993)
As of this writing Frank Zappa does not own the (distribution?
publishing?) rights to "200 Motels" but it is available on video.
Frank's first television appearance was in the early 60's
on the Steve Allen Show. He played a "bicycle concerto".
He played a drug-lord in an episode of "Miami Vice".
Frank makes a brief appearance in the Monkees' film, "Head". He
also appears in an episode from the Monkees' TV show.
Zappa made appearances on two episodes of Saturday Night Live.
He performed in two skits and performed the songs "I am the
Slime", "The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing", "The Purple Lagoon",
and "Dancin' Fool". The song "Conehead" from YAWYI, was
inspired by the SNL Conehead skits.
Frank is the voice of "The pope" on an episode of "Ren and Stimpy"
The episode is titled "Powdered Toast-Man".
[ed. note: The credits at the end of "PTM" were changed from
"The pope" to "The man with the funny white hat".]
Mr. Zappa also appears in A&E's series "Class of the 20th Century".
The following reviews are from Richard Fox (fo...@cis.ohio-state.edu):
The movies:
Uncle Meat: A movie started in 67 with the original Mothers of Invention.
Finished in 88 or 89 and released on videotape. The movie has
basically 2 parts to it. One is based on the live concert footage
of the Mothers plus a small orchestra in the London Festival Hall
in 68. This footage is based on the story of members of the band
quitting to start their own band either because they want a band
of all disciplined music or they want to escape from under Zappa's
shadow and play real rock and roll. The remainder of the movie
is made up of Dom DeWild (Don Preston) pretending to be a Jeckyl
and Hyde sort. Really wierd. There are also some videos of the
band for the songs Mr. Green Genes and Holiday in Berlin (from
Burnt Weenie Sandwich). The concert footage is good and the
videos are fun, but the rest is just plain bizzare.
200 Motels: Movie from 1970 starring Ringo Starr (as Zappa), Theodore
Bikel, the Mothers of Invention (this is the Flo and Eddie band
with George Duke, Ansley Dunbar, Ian Underwood and Ringo Starr's
chauffeur playing bass), and Keith Moon as a nun!! Its a surrealistic
look at how touring makes you crazy and the efforts that band members
have to go through to get some action (women). The entire movie
is a musical with some lines of dialogue but mainly songs. The
London Royal Philharmonic orchestra and some choir play through most
of the movie. The Mothers do several songs as well. The movie is
wierd (of course) and would have been much better had they been
given more than 7 days to film it. It is very difficult to watch if
you do not understand the context behind much of it. The movie
also features a 10 minute animated sequence. I would
recommend watching the True Story of 200 Motels either right before
or right after you watch the movie.
The True Story of 200 Motels: A 1 hour look at how 200 Motels was made.
It is very informative and includes outtakes from the movie plus
a look at the filming of the movie. There are interviews and also
some live concert footage from 1970 and 1973 (Dummy Up from Roxy
and Elsewhere!!!). It was released in 1989 and is a nice little
look at what making 200 Motels was like.
Baby Snakes: a 3 1/2 hour feature based around the Halloween concert in 1977
in NYC. There is about 1 1/2 hours of concert footage and the rest
is composed of the typical Zappa wierdness, noise, crowd scenes,
backstage scenes, claymation scenes and a look at Barking Pumpkin's
warehouse. The concert footage includes Titties and Beer, Punky's
Whips, Camarillo Brillo/Muffin Man, San Bern'dino, Dinah Moe Humm,
Black Page #2, Disco Boy, Jones Crusher, City of Tiny Lights, Tryin
To Grow A Chin, I Have Been In You, Broken Hearts are for Assholes
and a few more. There is also a video to Peaches En Regalia at
the end. The intermission portion shows clips from Barking Pumpkin
distribution.
Does Humor Belong in Music?: a 1 hour video of a concert from 1984. There
is also a CD of this name but the songs and performances differ
on the CD. This is an excellent video and shows off the vocal
talents of the 84 band. Songs include Zoot Allures, Tinseltown
Rebellion, Trouble Every Day, He's So Gay, Bobby Brown, Keep It
Greasy, Honey Don't You Want A Man Like Me?, Cosmik Debris,
Dinah Moe Humm, Be In My Video, Dancing Fool and Whipping Post.
There is also a little interview footage.
Video From Hell: Contains clips of the above videos, a sort of best of
video Zappa. Of particular interest is Zappa addressing the
Maryland State Legislature about censorship laws. This part
is very amusing. There is also a clip from an Australian talk
show appearance by Zappa in which Frank conducts the audience
and show's band in a wierd little improv. There is also
a clip from the 82 band playing King Kong (the "Blowjob" portion
which is on Stage III) and a guitar duet between Steve Vai
and Frank during Stevie's Spanking. Also, there is the song from
Jazz From Hell, Night School, played over footage of the making of
200 Motels.
"Illegal Videos": There are several unofficial videos available, all
from tv appearances. The ones I know about are:
1973 Stockholm TV - 50 minutes of the Little Wazoo band (featuring
Jean Luc Ponty). Consists of Montana, Duprees Paradise and a
medley of basically the Adventures of Greggary Peccary and
Be-Bop Tango. There is another version of this which features
about 80 minutes of music and has 3 or 4 more songs including
Stinkfoot and Cosmic Debris (if I remember correctly)
1974 US TV (from KCET LA I believe) - 1 hour of this band performing
songs like Florentine Pogen, Oh No, Inca Roads, Stinkfoot,
Cosmik Debris and others. Some claymation over parts. This
has been released as A Token of His Extreme. Portions of this
performance also appear on Dub Room Special.
1980 - French TV. An appearance on French TV. The footage is
about 30 minutes in length and includes Joes Garage,
Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?, Ms. Pinky and ILlinois
Enema Bandit. Some additional footage might also be
floating around on the Mudd Club footage.
Dub Room Special - combination of interviews, 1974 KCET footage,
and 1981 MTV footage (see below)
Saturday Night Live - 2 appearances, once as guest in which he
performs in Coneheads and Night on Freak Mountain plus
songs I'm the Slime, Meek Shall Inherit Nothing and
Dancing Fool. A bootleg exists of the songs performed
during one of these appearances, this bootleg also includes
Rollo (Son of St. Alphonzo), Purple Lagoon featuring John
Belushi as Samuri singing along, Peaches and others.
?????? - some footage from the 1979 band. I have seen about 10
minutes of this. I don't recall a name for it though.
Mudd Club - some footage from Zappa's 1978 (or 1980?) appearance
at the Mudd Club. Not very good footage at all.
1981 MTV - from Halloween at the Palladium in NYC. MTV broadcast
some of this show (or all of it?). It was subsequently
spliced up and shown as various features such as Dumb All
Over (45 minutes), You Are What You Is (45 minutes) and
the Torture Never Stops (1 hour 50 minutes). Also parts
are shown in Dub Room Special. Songs mainly consist of
You Are What You Is plus songs from Sheik Yerbouti. Also
has Strictly Genteel.
1988 Spanish TV. Almost all of a concert from Barcelonia including
Big Swifty, I am the Walrus, Bolero, a few songs from Broadway
the Hardway, The Torture Never Stops/Lonesome Cowboy Burt,
and others.
Zappa Compilation - there exists some form of compilation video
which has interviews of FZ throughout his career.
Zappa's Universe - this is the video release from Zappa's Universe and
follows most of the CD release. The video and CD have some
different songs, most notably are the inclusions of
Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk, Black Page, Uncle Meat, Wet
T-Shirt Nite (sung horribly by Dale Bozzio) and the full
Waka/Jawaka. Waka/Jawaka is the highlight of this video
which is well worth buying. Also highlighted are the
guitar duet between Steve Vai and Dweezil on Dirty Love.
Yellow Shark - a performance of Yellow Shark was broadcast in
Europe. With some hope, this will be released on video
at some point in the US. But so far, noone seems to
know if this will happen.
Two more videos, both from German TV:
Zappa at Circus Krone
In 1978 Zappa rented the big top of Circus Krone for some days to
rehearse with his band. Parts of the rehearsals were videotaped by
the BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk) and aired on some sunday morning ;)
in 78 or 79. Added footage contains Frank shopping in Munich and
an interview with his bodyguard. The band: Arthur Barrow, Denny
Walley, Tommy Mars, Vinny Colaiuta, Peter Wolf, Ed Mann, Ike
Willis. The songs: mostly '78 tour stuff, incl. 'Bobby Brown Goes
Down'. 45 min.
The Yellow Shark
The German pay-tv station "Premiere" did a live broadcast of the
premiere of "The Yellow Shark", performed by "Ensemble Modern"
at the "Alte Oper" in Frankfurt. Intermission is used for a
special on FZ incl. lots of verbal and musical quotes (and
German comments).
A recording of the second night of the set (with Moon and
Dweezil in the audience) was used as a tribute to Frank by
several European channels.
Here is some stuff from Fred Tomsett about Videos:-
FZ videos: there is indeed a video of Zappa on the
Steve Allen show. Very odd. Lots of chat, then the concerto.
B&W, natch.
'Baby Snakes' also exists as an edited down
version, running 90 mins or so. Not seen it.
There are also audience vidos of various 1988 gigs
such as Vienna, and a few German shows. Quality varies, but
Vienna is OK.
