The Drummer Who Murdered his Mom
Jim Gordon of Derek and The Dominoes

Jim Gordon was once the enor-mously talented drummer-songwriter of Derek and
the Dominos with Eric Clapton. He also played on albums for John Lennon,
George Harrison, the Everly Brothers, Gordon Lightfoot, Seals & Crofts,
Jackson Browne, Frank Zappa, Leon Russell and Bread.
But now he’s the answer to a dubious trivia question: Who is the only Grammy
Award winner convicted of murder?
Gordon, 54, imprisoned at the California Men’s Colony, is serv-ing a
16-years-to-life sentence for viciously killing his mother.
He claimed he has heard voices for most of his life and he attacked his
mother to quiet them. On June 3, 1983, he hit 71 -year-old Osa Marie Gordon
in the head several times with a hammer. When that didn’t kill her, he
stabbed her three times.
Five psychiatrists testified he was an acute paranoid schizo-phrenic, and he
was convicted of second-degree murder, Gordon takes daily medicine to
control depression and schizophrenia and is housed in the high-medium
security wing of the San Luis Obispo, Calif., prison. He’s twice been
rejected for parole.
Six years ago, while watching the ceremony from a mental hos-pital, he won a
Grammy for Rock Song of the Year for Clapton’s re-release of “Layla,” which
Gordon wrote in 1970.
“Winning the Grammy was great. It’s a big old heavy thing,” Gordon said. “I
got to hold it.”
But he also said that since the murder, none of his old music friends have
written, called or vis-ited him in prison, and Clapton never mentioned him
when he accepted his Grammy. “I don’t blame ‘em,” he admitted. Today, Gordon
still receives royalties from all the songs he’s written and his net worth
“would fall into the six figures,” accord-ing to his financial manager.
The question is: Will he ever get to spend it?
