Why take to the hills when all summer long, New York City is
alive with the sound of music? For genius and glamour, the city's
summer music festivals can't be beat, and many offer free or
bargain-priced events.
Lincoln Center Festival
This multigenre celebration offers an invigorating mix of
cutting-edge theater, dance and music, all with an international
flair.
The New York premiere of Respighi's captivating opera "La Bella
Dormente nel Bosco" ("Sleeping Beauty"), staged by puppeteer
Basil Twist, opens the festival, playing the same dates as
"Ocean," the last collaboration between composer John Cage and
choreographer Merce Cunningham (July 12-16).
Other music-theater offerings include "I La Galigo," visual
artist Robert Wilson's staging of a 14th century Indonesian epic
(July 13-16); "Shadowtime," Brian Ferneyhough's opera based on
philosopher Walter Benjamin's life (July 21-22); and the world
premiere of "My Life as a Fairy Tale," director Chen Shi-Zheng
and singer-songwriter Stephin Merritt's exploration of the dark
side of Hans Christian Andersen (July 27, 29 and 30).
New-music ensemble Icebreaker plays Frank Zappa and Thomas Adès
(July 23), and Alarm Will Sound revisits the works of acid-techno
innovator Aphex Twin (July 24).
Events are held at various Lincoln Center venues:
