Sound Forge XP is really inexpensive and can be tried for 30 days free...

And you know what that means...the Site That Wouldn't Die is on its way back too... http://www.lawndalecommons.com/ !
Get rid of the "NOPE" and change the other caps into numbers and that's my address...sorry about the spamblock.

Although "Dante", CMU's ill-fated volcano exploring robot, would have a hard
time negotiating the learning curve involved, Csound is one of the most
flexible soft-synths I've ever used. You can set it up to use audio files
as samples and manipulate them in an almost unlimited variety of ways, either
programatically, or under MIDI control. It's also a full blown music synth
with a vast array of tone filters, delays, oscilators, and ADSR generators,
ad infinitum.
You can grab the software from:
ftp://ftp.maths.bath.ac.uk/pub/dream/newest/
And you can check out the main web site here:
http://mitpress.mit.edu/e-books/csound/frontpage.html
And finally the manual at:
http://www.lakewoodsound.com/csound/
If you're on a Linux box, then a more user-friendly, second generation
program based on the Csound engine, is a project called Quasimodo.
This is a rewrite of the old, inefficient, spaghetti code this is Csound,
done exclusively for Linux (including Alphas, etc.) with a sophisticated
graphical "patchbay" type of interface.
It is currently in developement and only availible via CVS, but it would
pay the patient-minded to keep an eye on this project.
