They ran an excerpt from a wartime radio interview hosted by Leslie
Howard (in which Niven adroitly but entertainingly refuses to disclose
any meaningful information about his current service location or
activities whatsoever) promoting the then-recently completed film "The
First of the Few"; particularly interesting to me as the BBC happened to
have broadcast the picture in question only a few weeks ago. And the
exchange in which Niven and Howard proceed to overwhelm one another with
mutually diffident praise ('Well, I really thought you were very good
too') had my own stiff upper lip trembling dangerously on the verge of
delighted enjoyment.
Next week at the same time: house-mate and fellow charmer, Errol Flynn.
And if this programme lives up to the last, it should be an equally
affectionate entertainment, with no gestures at debunking or cinema
theory but a half-hour tribute to just what made these actors charming,
by those who found -- and still find -- them so.
Sadly, I quite probably shan't be in a position to listen to it
myself...
