Heard it last nite-initial thoughts-Hidden Shame and Complicated Shadows
are great-I like the idea of the Album, the theme and acoustic sound
maybe more than the record itself. I like How Deep Is The Red & the
title track, Changing Partners, but gonna have to give it several more
listens. Something I notice with Elvis after listening to him for over
30 years-simpler is defnitely better..he has a habit since Spike when
acoustic of obtuse melodies, obscure lyrics, & then over singing...not a
good combination. If he had just cut an album of songs he had already
written in his mammoth catalog using this bluegrass/country style, when
he could write one classic after another that were B-sides, which were
as good or better than anybody else's best songs at the time such as
Stranger In The House, Girls Talk, Big Tears, Radio Sweetheart etc...or
a few of the KOA Rhino 2nd Disc stuff it would be stronger I think, but
it'll take a few more listens...

Yep, it's available for free listening on elviscostello.com, which is
a very welcome and possibly brave/suicidal move on the part of
musicians. I must admit, I have absolutely no idea how this works as a
business model. I know Costello is not the first person to do it,
Radiohead got a lot of media coverage from their 'pay what you want'
In Rainbows decision, and other bands offer a streaming version of
entire albums. It's nice to see that Costello has followed suit and
allows fans the opporunity to listen before purchasing, and he's to be
commended for doing it. As to how that works commerically, I'm lost.

For what it's worth, after a couple of listens, I'm disappointed. This
is threading water stuff. It's a collection of songs apparently
written for a Hans Christian Anderson musical that never was, 'cos
Danny Kaye beat him to it... The fact that Complicated Shadows turns
up there kinda proves the point.

Regards,
G

It's hard to evaluate-I haven't really listened to it thoroughly again-
like Dylan's new one on one hand-for a dude 68..it is damn impressive to
still have that vitality and no white guy can do the blues like
Dylan..he just sounds like a cross between Muddy and Wolf on My Wife's
Hometown. it's good for what it is, but it sure as hell isn't anywhere
near Blood On The Tracks, Oh Mercy, Time Out Of Mind.....he doesn't
really have anything to say & all of it sounds pretty good, but only one
or two songs sound original, which is the problem with roots music, it'
all been done before, and done as well as can be done, that almost
everything within, sounds as an imitation, in a overdone genre. In my
view that's why Imperial Bedroom, Sgt. Pepper's, Pet Sounds, Revolver,
Satanic majesties Request, piper at the gates of dawn, Armed Forces,
Dark Side of The moon, etc....never sound old because it doesn't pay
reverential homage to any roots...and they don't sound like anything
else....

Because it is so simple, I mean the songs are easy to play, I think this
could end up being one of Elvis's most widely popular albums.
