Hello all. I'm doing a paper on Sinatra's influence on some later artists,
one of them being Costello.

Can anyone recommend any albums (I have Kojak and Imperial Bedroom) that
have songs on them with a "Sinatra" feel.

I appreciate any help....

Painted from Memory has an overall Sinatra feel. But, the title song
especially sounds like Sinatra (thanks in part to Johnny Mandel's string
arrangement)

I can't remember which song... but the music to one of the tracks on Imperial
Bedroom was sent to Lyricist Sammy Cahn, an old Sinatra colaborator, for
lyrics. Sammy didn't come up with anything so Elvis finished it himself. I'm
sure someone can fill in the details here.

Other connections to Francis Albert....
Elvis chose a Frank tune for his "desert island discs" selection on BBC Radio.

Elvis wrote an obitutary of Frank in British music mag Mojo. (In which he
retold his joke about why Frank was better than Elvis Presley..... because he
never recorded any songs about Shell Fish)

EC's new manager is Tony Bennet's Son

I believe that Costello has said that he wrote "Almost Blue" with Sinatra in
mind and offered the song to him. Apparantly Sinatra declined.

I thought it was Chet Baker ?

It was Chet Baker. EC said one time on Letterman that his goal, and that of
every serious songwriter, would be to have FS record one of his songs.
Apparently, folks like Bono and George Michael were more attractive.

Elvis once said his favorite Frank Sinatra
record was "Only The Lonely",not a bad
choice.

Off of "Goodbye Cruel World":

Deportees Club & Deportee

"I pray to the saints and all the martyrs
For the secret life of Frank Sinatra"--

...I BET!

Also, I remarked to a coworker when I bought the EC/BB CD that it looked as
if EC was trying to invoke the spirit of Frankie baby when he donned that
hat-THAT HAT! UGH! Would've been a cool touch if ALL the pictures were B&W
and you couldn't tell it was somekind of woven straw-lookin' thing. But
other than "What's her name today" I didn't really feel much Frankie, which
is really just as well.

Actually, Elvis's voice is better than Frank's.

And did Sinatra ever write a song?

I'm a big Elvis fan, and not a big Frank fan, but I know better than that.
Frank had one of the best voices ever.

Maybe you were just being sarcastic, but...

Actually, one of Sinatra's strengths was his breath control. He was known for
being able to hold notes for a particularly long time. He trained himself to do
this as a boy, when he would go underwater in a swimming pool and try to stay
down there for as long as possible while singing favorite songs in his head. I
am not making this up.

But if you were being sarcastic, never mind.

That is. Without question *THE* funniest thing that anybody has ever
said. Ever. Congratulations, mate, top comedy!

>And did Sinatra ever write a song?

No, he didn't, he had song writers to do that for him. And arrangers to
arrange them for him. I suggest you get a copy of 'Mojo' issue 56 (July
1998) and Elvis's two-page article on Frank Sinatra before you say
another word on this subject...!

Elvis a better singer than Frank... Christ, I've heard *everything*
now...!

I think Elvis is a better singer. Frank only did a sing-song talk type
of singing. Sinatra is one of the most overrated people in the music
industry. Not that he's bad, just overrated. People just fall for all
the hype.

You must be thinking of an old Frank Sinatra. Try listening to earlier
Frank, say like when he was 20-30, and you might change your mind! (about
him being overrated, that it) I agree Elvis is better, but Frank is a
contender.

I think you're totally over-rating Costello.
Or maybe I'm thinking of an
old Elvis Costello!

Well, I can't agree with that. Frank's phrasing and control was superb,
considerably better than much of his material. I don't think he could
hold a candle to Ella Fitzgerald myself, but I think he's a considerably
better singer than EC. Only "Almost Blue" (the track, not the album(
comes close to the ability of Frank.

(Plus, if you bad-mouth him, two large men named Luigi pay you a visit to
persuade you otherwise.)

Of course, on the other hand, you
can bad-mouth Costello all you want!

I agree.... Costello is undoubtedly a fine lyricist (one of the best of the
last 25 years) and has his moments as a tunesmith, and certainly has is own
style as a singer, but as a technician, or even interpreter of songs he is
no match for Sinatra. Enjoy EC for what he is!! I do think, however, he
makes a great stab at the PFM album, although you can tell he's struggling a
little. Truly great singers would make those songs seem effortless. Having
said all that, I think he's got a voice full of character and I always enjoy
his concerts...

There's a big wide world out there...

Has his moments as a tunesmith? If you mean hundreds of moments, you're right.
