The man can drum!

Check out his front page cover in "Stick It- Drumming for Everyone" in the
Sept/Oct 99 issue. The magazine also features a great story on the man,
complete with some interesting facts and a Nigel/Elton "listening guide".

http://www.stickitonline.com/

The issue sells online through their website for $9.95. Keep in mind the
newstand price is $4.95. It might be better to check in music stores/large
magazine stands for this issue.

Pretty good reading, even for a non-drummer-huge-Elton-fan like me.

As far as drummers go, I don't think he's quite up there, but for Elton, he was
just so perfect. He just fit. Elton ought to bring him back! No one did it
better in that spot! Charlie was good, even a better drummer with technique and
all, but Nigel is just cooler. =) Okay, enough ranting. ;=)

Actually i enjoy when it's just Elton and Ray Cooper.

I got those in the mail from a really great person, but have yet to listen to
it...! But I will say that Ray Cooper is probably amoung the top 3
percussionists out there, but that's what I consider him. The best band Elton's
ever had was with Ray, Nigel, Davey, and Dee. And I wasn't even born when they
were around the first time. ;) Not to say I don't enjoy his stuff now, and not
to discredit anyone else in his later bands, they all rock, but just as a
personal favorite, it had to be them.

I agree that Nigel contributed to a different Elton Sound in the early
seventies...but not with his drums so much as his voice. Nigel is credited
with doing the background vocals on most of the "standards" and was often
mistaken for Elton. I loved the early songs because of those vocals and
miss them in today's music. Of course they truly were a band back then (at
least until '75) and the arrangements showed it.

Ray Cooper is **awesome** in concert. Damn near steals the show at
times...and Elton's handing him the wallet, so to speak. Excellent
showman and mind-boggling percussionist.

I agree. I think Nigel was a decent drummer, but not the best Elton has had.
I remember in '80 I think it was, seeing Nigel playing with Elton, and he was
less than anthusiastic to watch. But, when it came his time to play a couple
of songs he was promoting for his then new album, he was a different drummer.
Personally, Charlie Morgan is my favorite. He was fun to watch, and could
really beat on those drums.

No, no, no..........NIGEL was the best drummer. LOL. Listen to "Curtains" again
- it's the "descriptive drumming" that makes him so unique. Maybe when you saw
him and he wasn't enthusiastic, he was just having an off night. If "Curtains"
doesn't do it for you, then give "Bitter Fingers" a listen. And crank it up!

Oops.....what I meant to say was....give "Better Off Dead" a listen, not "Bitter
Fingers" - just a braindead moment I guess...lol.

Yes, but Nigel has the sweetest voice....those background vocals on all the
early stuff remain unmatched by any other drummer since....

Yes, but do you want a drummer who can do nice back-up vocals, or do you want a
drummer who gets out there and kicks some ass. I personally prefer the later,
that's why I still think Charlie Morgan is the best drummer Elton has had, and
I was sorry to see him leave the band.

I agree to disagree here. I honestly feel that Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffet was
Elton's best drummer. If you notice, he only played on one full-length studio
album ("Sleeping With The Past") but his drums are the first thing you hear on
almost every song on the album. He was awesome!

I don't think Elton has ever had a bad band. I would love to see him
again record and work with, in addition to Davey and Ray, Nigel, Caleb
Quaye, and Kenny Passarelli (sp?). I assume they [Caleb and Kenny] are
still alive since I haven't heard otherwise.

Very funny. Cute? Sure he is.....BUT.....Talented? Even more so. Just listen
again to 11-17-70 (especially Sixty Years On). Nigel is a GREAT drummer. I won't
argue the fact that Charlie Morgan is a great drummer too, because he's also got a
load of talent. I'm not an expert on drummers, but Nigel's work just stands out in
my opinion.

You know I have to change my answer from Charlie Morgan to Ray Cooper. You
are so right. The first time I saw Elton live, he was solo with Ray back in
79. When Ray came out and started beating on those drums, etc., he nearly
stole the show.
