I've had this lying around for nearly a month, but I've finally got
round to finishing the documentation, so here's a release version:

Source: http://www.jaj22.demon.co.uk/ffe/jjffe20s.zip
(Includes Linux/Allegro version)

The main binary worth downloading is the DirectX one, because it does
windowed modes and works better on Win2k. The DOS binaries don't offer
much new over jjffe15 except CD video support and a couple of minor
bugfixes. As always, read the included text files for more details.

Note that .mid versions of the original .hmp files are necessary for the
music in the Allegro/DOS and DirectX versions. You can convert them
yourself or download them from:

http://www.jaj22.demon.co.uk/ffe/ffemidi.zip

Nice one! So I gather you've solved all the little annoyances with
the dx version then eh? I haven't been on IRC of late because of
seriously poor connections - lag city etc.

Wow.
Great job!
I've seen FFE first time one my NT station. I was impressed, because old
versions
of jjffe failed on my computer.
Anyway, I was looking on introduction but I wanted to play, so simply
clicked on the windows and...
nothing. Mouse doesnt work. The only one key that worked was F12
(windowed/fullscreen toggle).

What is going on?

I WANT to play! :)))))))))))))))))))

I just tried downloading these files from the original links but if
failed for me, too. I did succeed in downloading from Tyler Eaves site.

A big thanks to both of you.

All the ones I knew about, yes. There was some nasty stuff involving
non-ANSI uses of fgetpos and fsetpos that didn't work with MSVC libs,
and some reverse-palette problems in 15/16 bit modes. Solved them all
eventually.

Oops. Looks like the DInput version-selection stuff didn't work. NT only
contains DirectX 3, and I couldn't use the first version of DInput
because I needed Poll() for the joystick code. I'll have another go at
finding a workaround.

Are you prepared to do some testing? Nobody on #alt.fan.elite runs NT4,
and I generally use them for testing.

Ok, I've stripped the joystick code and set DInput to version 3 for you
NT4 people. Try the following alternative executable:

I do not care too much about joystick, cause I dont have&use one. ;)

It runs great on w2k. Does anyone have problems with selecting a target
with the autopilot in the star system map, the one that shows you the
planets orbiting the star etc? When I browse through the planets I can't
select any starbases or stations. I also liked using f10 and f11 to zoom
in and out, but now it 'pauses' the game.

My personal feelings about nt version.

Mouse and keyb works now but strange.
In a window game works very slow so I toggled it into fullscreen but
there
mouse pointer moves very strange. Its like in old when you wrote a mouse
handler
and forgot about divination by 8 to get smooth move pixel by pixel not
by 8x8 pixel
squares. In this NT version you have not such strange jumps but mouse
works very fast
(too fast) and jumps from time to time.

I run NT4

Sadly, only at work though, and I don't think they'd appreciate me testing
games!

Me too.

Thanks, JJ! I decided to start playing FFE again three days ago, having
given up when it came out full-o-bugs. And what do I find? A shiny new
Win32 exe! Cool!

I can't solve the F10 problem, unless anyone knows how to stop Windows
hooking it. Even commercial games seem to suffer from this. However, F11
and F12 are the zoom keys rather than F10 and F11, so I've freed them up
and added some key-repeat code. I've also added mouse sensitivity code,
mostly for the NT4 people with mouse-speed problems. Get the new version
from:

Win9x/2k binary: http://www.jaj22.demon.co.uk/ffe/winjjffe21b.zip
WinNT4 binary: http://www.jaj22.demon.co.uk/ffe/nt4jjffe21b.zip
Source: http://www.jaj22.demon.co.uk/ffe/jjffe21s.zip

The other binary versions are unchanged from 2.0. Note that Ctrl-F12,
rather than plain F12 is now the fullscreen switch key.

Can anyone who's mirrored the previous versions please replace them with
these? Thank you.

Ok, looks like DInput 3 on NT doesn't behave quite like other systems.
This should be is easily solved with modifiable sensitivity, which I've
bunged into the new version:

I had problems with mouse in Windows 2000. Buttons didn't work as
expected. Sometimes, after doing a single mouse click, the game
though I kept clicking. So when I moved the pointer over anything
that reacts to mouse button, it kept clicking it all the time. It
was fixed by clicking again with the same button, but it was
nightmare to play anything.

If I pressed the right mouse button, to enable mouse to control
the ship, it usually triggered by laser. I never managed to take
off without killing myself or being killed.

This problem only happens in window mode. Fullscreen mode seems to
work perfectly. Another minor feature in window mode that when other
window was active, and ffe window was inactive, the buffer jumped
up and down slightly. No, my monitor picture is very verey stable and
crystal clear :) The effect was even greater if I moved mouse.

But again, the fullscreen mode worked fine. One of the save games
did not load, but since I save often, it didn't hurt much.

It is sort of sad that it only takes like one hour play time to
get Asp, compared to how slow it was in Frontier to get ship
upgrades..

And I think winffe is a great, great job!

Hmm. This can't really be anything except a Win2k DirectInput bug -
Neither WinFFE or the FFE core are event based, so it must be
DirectInput losing mouse button release events. Could you be using a
pre-release version of Win2k?

>If I pressed the right mouse button, to enable mouse to control

Again, I can't see this being anything but a DirectInput bug. It's
slightly weirder though.

I get this when the FFE window is partially obscured. I thought this was
related to the effect of clipping on a stretch-blit, but with an
intermediate stretching buffer this shouldn't happen. Winquake versions
suffer from a similar problem, particularly in higher resolutions.
Broken DDraw clipping algorithms?

Probably about time I upgraded from version 1.3, then. But it works, and
doesn't go wrong.

True.
Before this upgrade, I used version 1.4 with no problems. It has always
worked fine.

Other than the gamma correction and joystick code, the only external
changes have been increased OS/API support. All versions are known to be
stable on all intended platforms, bar JJFFE 1.2. FFE has enough bugs
already without me adding extra ones.
