In the Elenium, I remember Sephrenia being startled when Flute(Aphrael)
called Sparhawk "father". Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find
where I read it! Can anyone remember if it was before or after she began
her life as Danae (in the womb, of course).
This has really been bugging me, so please help me figure this out!

Thanks in advance.

As far as i can remember, it was definitely after aphrael began her
life as danae. I think sephrenia then had to try and rationalize this
to sparhawk (since sephrenia already knew that aphrael was danae, but
sparhawk didn't)

Actualy, Flute did refer to Sparhawk as 'father' before she bacame Danae. I believe it was just before he killed Ghwerig (Sp?) but I'm not sure.

Hey, I just finished rereading the Elenium last night, so I
think I can be of some assitance.
The first time I know of is when Sparhawk is approaching the
statue of Azash to touch it with the Bhelliom (p 457 paperback). Aphrael
says "Of course, father" after he asks her to wish him luck.
Now the question is, is this before she began her life as Danae.
The most obvious answer is yes, as Ehlana must have gotton pregnant
after her wedding night. This is confirmed when Danae said:

"Something terrible happened in the Temple of Azash, Father, and
I needed to hide from it for a while. Mother's womb was the perfect
place to hide. It was so safe and secure there."
"Then you *knew* what was going to happen in Zemoch," he
accused.
"I knew that *something* was going to happen, so I just covered
all the possibilities."

Aphrael thought she might need a place to hide, so she put herself
(sorry, can't think of a better term) in Ehlana's womb.

Wellll, Sepherina says at one point that it's a term of affection.
Of course, that could be to cover up a mild blunder on DE's part :-)

It appears I was wrong in my other post. At the end of the Ruby Knight
(p. 366 paperback) Aphrael does call sparhawk "my noble father" and
"Father."

Sephrenia's comment is
"It's a Styric form of address, " Sephrenia said rather quickly,
throwing a look at Flute. "It has to do with respect--and love."

My question on this is, why does Sephrenia throw a look at Flute?
According to Danae, Sephrenia was suprised and upset that Ehlana became
pregnant, so she couldn't have know what Aphrael was planning.

This is actually incorrect. The first time that Aphrael/Flute calls
Sparhawk father is just before Sparhawk confront Ghewrig (please excuse
if I spelled it wrong. It's been at least a week and a half since I last
read it and I have sort of forgotton some of spellings for some of the more
exotic names); she says something like, "Please be careful, father . . .",
though this is not a precise quotation. You'll find this first reference
to "father" towards the end of the second book of the Elenium.
I hope that this has cleared up any problems. . .

In the second book of the elenium, when sparhawk and kurik are
fighting Ghwerig (sp??), aphrael says something like "Be caeful my
noble father."

So there u are, just look right near the end of the second book,
and u will find what u r looking for.

Bye

Glen Balmer.

PS: Has anybody in Australia SEEN the second book of the Tamuli????

Perhaps it is simply a term of respect. Sparhawk, after all, IS Anakha.
With the style that Eddings wrote the Elenium, I wouldn't be suprised
if a God(dess) showed respect for a human, esspecially Anakha. Also,
most of the church knights refer to Sephrenia (sp) as "Little Mother".
This is a similer, though more easily accepted parallel, on a lesser
scale. It could just be a idiosyncrasey (sp) of the people in Eosia.
