Being a film major, this is an idea that every once in a while keeps drumming
through my head. Granted, it would take 10-14 hours to do it justice, but
it still could be interesting.
So, who would YOU cast in the major roles. My personal casting choices are as
follows:
Garion: Ethan Hawke (from Dead Poets Society, Alive)
Polgara: Jane Seymour (Dr. Quinn herself)
Belgarath: Sean Connery (nuff said)
Ce'Nedra: Samantha Mathis (Nora of Pump up the Volume... she'd need a wig.)
Barak: Arnold Schartzenegger (nuff said again)
Silk: Dustin Hoffman (an odd choice, but he seems to fit)
Durnik: Scott Bakula (The great moral, honest, good guy from Quantum Leap.)
Lelldorin: Christian Slater (he needs to practice looking stupid, though.)
Hettar: Steven Segal (TELL me he doesn't LOOK perfect...)
Mandorallen: Nick Brimble (John Little in Robin Hood)
Relg: Jean Claude Van Damme (short, athletic, and harsh accent)
Taiba: Winona Ryder (I just love her...)
Asharak: Julian Sands (see Warlock, and you'll agree))
Zakath: Alan Rickman (see Robin Hood)
Voice of the Prophecy: Dean Stockwell

Of course, this budget is sky-rocketing, but who cares? Comments, questions,
additions, et cetera are welcome.

Great Idea! Maybe a mini-series would be better than 6 or 7 movies though.
I think Sean Connery would make an excellant Belgarath, and Danny DeVito could
probably pull off Beldin just right. I'd suggest Keifer Sutherland for Silk, I
think he has the shifty eyes and dishonest manner, and with some straggly
whiskers, probably wouldn't look too unrat-like:-). The other suggestions I don't
know or don't think would be suitable..Arnie has the build for Barak, but I just
can't see him with a beard. Well, those are my suggestions.

I don't think we are ever told what the Voice sounds like (except
'dry', which is not very helpful). So long as the Voice has the right
feel to it (dry and amused at Garion's activities), it will be all
right.

It seems that despite the usual deeply split nature of Usenet (nobody
agreeing with anyone else for several characters), some conclusions
are beginning to be reached:

Polgara: Jane Seymour or Sigourney Weaver
[I think that both would probably be good in the role]
Beldin: Danny deVito
[The part is tailor made for him!]

So we are nearing agreement (or reducing the number of different
factions anyway :) on two of the characters...

Trouble is, Garion'll probably need at least two people to play him, at
different ages. Fred Savage WOULD have been okay, but he's too old now.
MJF seems just a bit too whiny at any age. Broderick? Maybe. I haven't
seen any of his more serious films, unless you count "Biloxi Blues".

I think Brian Dennehy would be wonderful as Rhodar. If you don't know who Brian
Dennehy is, you're wrong... *giggle* He's been in almost every film ever made,
he's the partner in FX for a relatively major role. I think I could see Jane
Seymour in a kitchen, actually, watch some episodes of Nora Quinn, Medicine
Woman (I think that's the title, something like it) Seymour does a good job
portraying a strong pioneer woman who is still very attractive. For some other
parts I'd have to say Alan Rickman as Taur Urgas, Nicholson is an incredible
actor, but his insanity always seems more quiet and reserved, I think Rickman
could play a socio/psychopath very well. I see Nicholson as Torak, actually.

You're all saying that it would be wonderful if there was a movie, or a
mini-series or an HBO special, but think about it. How can they
represent the will and the word outside of the text? Or the Drasnian
Secret Language? Or all the conversations that go between the minds of
all the characters? In a book all of this sounds really cool, but I
think it would be really cheesy if it was attempted to be put on screen.
A movie, no matter how precise or long, just wouldn't do the book
justice. Any comments?

I don't see too many problems with doing a movie based on the series.
Lets see:, the Will and the Word - standard special effects will work for this
Mind to mind communication: Simply have the charectors who are talking
to each other say those lines and superimpose the voices on the picture
Drasnian Sign Language: invent a sign language, derived from American Sign
Language(easier if you don't have to invent each sign yourself) and have
the actors use it. When you wish the people watching the movie
to understand what is being said, sub-title the film with the translation.

OK Howabout this.
For a start, call it national pride or whatever, I think English voices would suit
the aristocratic characters much better than.....Angela Logansberry for example
(suggested somewhere for someone).

Belgarath - Sean Connory (this one was worked out almost immediatly, I'm pleased
to see). Or perhaps Donald Sutherland, now he's looking older.

Velvet - Helena Bonham-Carter (room with a view and other Merchant-Ivories) or
Kirsty Swanson ( Buffy), depending on how you imagine Velvet. (Subtle
and beautiful, or athletic and sexy)

Relg - Bolo Yeung, the baddie from Blood Sport and also in Enter the Dragon.
V.thick set, with a strange accent and 'unusual' looks. I can easily
see him thrusting Murgos into rocks by the brace.

Llendorin - Carey Elwes - Another Country, Princess Bride etc. Another unorigional
suggestion.

The Voice - There are only a few concievable choice. Micheal Horden. (Gandalf in the
BBC radio version of Lord of the Rings, and countless others) Or perhaps
Charles Gray (the strange man behind the desk in the Rocky Horror Picture
Show). This is another spot where an ancient voice would, IMHO sound
peculiar in an American (or Australian) accent.

The Twins - Who else, but Arnie and Danny. Not.

I agree with the choice of Patrick Stewart as the voice of prophecy.
Gene Wilder would be great as Belgarath.
Peter Sellers would be great as Aldur. Unfortunately he has passed...
Danny DeVito would make a great Beldin!
Who was nominated for Belgarion? Well as an adolescent, River Phoenix
would be good.
Eric Idle could be Torak. After all, he sold out his country in Patriot

Wait. Errand as a kid, or a teenager? Brian Bonsall's about twelve, I

six to about sixteen.

Too nasty, not human enough. Zakath isn't just a jerk, he's also

Nah. Kristy Swanson as Liselle. Ariana's not that competent. Just pick

How about the Voice from Dune (one version)?

Oh and I seem to have deleted it but I think that I should play Silk.

Drasnian language - slight problem with using sign - it is designed

James Earl Jones. You may recall that Jones did the voice of Darth Vader so
actually Jones could do the voices of *both* prophesies. Very fitting in my

might work well.

I agree that Angelica Huston would be better than Seymour as Polgara. Seymour is ok, but Polgara is a rather tall woman (taller than most men if I recall correctly...not likely :) and Huston has that majestic face and carriage.

I'd just like to point something out here, Garion (and C'Nedra) are only 16.
Now to be HONEST, I don't think that any of the about could act 16, let alone

John Candy? Naah; no one takes him seriously enough. I don't remember once
seeing Rhodar anything other than dead serious (or, in the case of early on in

Snotty, maybe, but remember we would also need someone *short* enough for the
role. Ce'Nedra being only 15-16 here (she was still mentioned as "tiny"
some twelve years later at the end of _Seeress_), we're talking about *small*!
(I personally think that her depiction on the front of _Castle of Wizardry_ is

I think a return or two in there would have been in order, actually. I'd like
to see a newsgroup too, but a MUSH is apparently out of teh question. For some
reason M. Lackey won't grant permission, and has threatened to sue anyone
who sets one up. Of course, the fact that I don't have MUSH access anymore
has absolutely nothing to do the issue...:)

I know that the Queen's Own, the official Mercedes Lackey fan club
(they sent me a sample of their newsletter; it's apparently run by a bunch
of people out of a small P.O. Box in Jersey), has a system by which Lackey
fans can actually "be" a Herald or Bard or what-have-you. Perhaps this is some
kind of RPG authorised by Ms. Lackey and, therefore, she doesn't want any
other ones to exist? I dunno. Anyways, I do not have MUSH access either, so
I don't much care one way or the other. But a newsgroup has been universally
agreed to be a good idea...

A chapter of the Queen's Own exists on the Internet. You can subscribe to
the electronic newsletter by sending email to magewind...@cs.bu.edu
The list itself is mage...@cs.bu.edu, but ONLY real articles 'n stuff
should go that; the address for subscriptions and other administrivia
is the request address.

Now, can we get all of this out of alt.fan.eddings? Thank you.

Sorry, no MUSHes will be allowed. Her agents have forbidden this, as it
could cause problems if a computer game is released later.

Please could someone create a Lackey newsgroup PLEASE?
