Non-alcoholic: Schloer, Ame, lots and lots of water.
Alcoholic: Lager shandy, real ales, wine, single Scottish malts.

MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS:

WHAT OTHER NEWSGROUPS DO YOU READ: none.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN READING AFE: 4th July 1997, on and off since
then. Hang on. OVER A DECADE. I'd have gotten less for murder,
honestly....

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE THREAD ON AFE: Filks and flamewars. tEC
reviews.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES: Reading, bitching, knocking things down
(aka
DIY), gardening, ebaying (selling as well as buying), writing,
redecorating, planning parties :)

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE DOING 10 YEARS FROM NOW: "Dear 2018 Natalie.
You had better have gotten your arse in gear and made a decision by
now. You know what I mean. You're as bad as the Seers/Seeresses of
Kell, sitting on that fence for millenia. It's been ten years. Love,
2008 Natalie."
Sorry, I mean living in my own home, by the river, with the man I
love. Ideally with a rugrat or two or three. Working for employers who
respect me, and pay me enough that I can do my yearly jaunt to see
friends and family in US/Aus. Having the authority to be taken
seriously and not be called "hen" "love" and "pet" by the patriarchy
who just see me as a redhaired, large breasted, hysterical bimbo.
Being physically well, having overturned my recent health problems and
challenged my current diagnosis.
Being in control. Being the master of my fate. :)

WHAT IS THE ONE THING/SKILL THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE NOW THAT YOU WISHED
YOU
POSSESSED: The ability to not want to punch people who tell me to calm
down, not worry so much, and not to let things get to me. See above.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE WORST THING ABOUT YOU: I lie. I cheat. I
backstab. I bitch behind people's backs when I don't get my own way.
Which is worst? *shrug*

WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN A FRIEND: the words "I support you".

HOW DO YOU PICTURE AFE: a bar I used to love. The windows are dusty,
the shutters are half closed, the dishtowel is draped over the taps,
and the chairs are stacked in the corner. I'm ringing the bell in the
hope that the bartender will appear, and as if by magic the old
regulars will pour back through the doors laughing and arguing over
whose round it is, and bring some new friends in with them. But I'll
sit here and sip my pint alone in the meantime.

DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION: Will Big Dave ever write a decent book
again?

WHAT SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES DO YOU USE: Livejournal, facebook, and
another two I won't admit to in public ;)

Ce'Nedra - Queen of the World
"A terrible fury suddenly filled her.
'Kill them!' she hissed from between clenched teeth.
'Kill them for me!' And then she could weep."

ISTR that I was right up there with you for some time as well.
Admittedly, given the low traffic levels these days, I'm probably
*still* near the top, with 1% of the post count I once had. :-p

Just a little dismay at having to embarress myself in public again. That
and realising how little I've changed (in some ways) in the last 10
years.

I didn't decline, I was booked at a Burlesque night by Mrs Mandy. And
besides, given that none who would be there have seen much of my
physique in the last 5 years, there wouldn't be much to compare with.
I'm certainly not in the best form of my life, but I was 10 years
younger when *that* last occurred, and there's still a ways to go for
that to be the case again. On the other hand, I do have a holiday in the
sun at the end of april to work towards, so who knows what I might
achieve with the right incentive...

Raised nominally christian, now I just take a little bit of whatever
feels like it makes sense. Some christian, some pagan, some buddhist,
and a smattering of random crap ideas that I don't have a source for
(possibly my own diseased imagination).

Sounds familiar. I like the Christian ideals, and try to live by them
myself, but as I don't believe he was anything apart from a wise
hippy, I don't call myself a Christian. A few people out there have
come back from the dead, but I don't know if he was one of them, and

It might be because it redefines patriotism to mean "People who
support the occupation of Iraq". It is not very subtle in it's
conflating of 'Support The Troops' with 'Support the War/Occupation'.

Ah, *that* kind of patriotism. Of course, with the recent problems here
with people in uniform, I wouldn't mind some of that sort of patriotism.

After all, there's a massive difference between respecting the fact that
some people are willing to put their lives on the line to protect ones
way of life, and supporting the decision to be putting those lives on
the line. A decision, which is usually made by people who've never even
contemplated that level of self-sacrifice. Bastards.

I remember that. I was actually using as a basis for my "who should I
read next" list, which I suppose was part of the point. I vaguely recall
querying something on there at one point too. Damned if I can remember
what.

Hmm. There's an idea. Not quite a casting thread, but a "What character

Not that kind of field, obviously. Honestly, I'd have thought a linguist
like yourself would have figured it out.

Obviously, the mercury levels in the Dart are on the rise this year.

The list is still around, although it only gets updated once or twice
a year now. Oddly enough, it has become a library resource. Last time
I checked, links to it turned up on over 100 different library
websites, which is kind of depressing because now I feel like I _have_
to keep it available and reasonably up-to-date.

Hey, if any of you have new authors to recommend, I'm still accepting
names from all the original AFE participants.

Here's one of the few new names that has made it on the list in the
last five year: Naomi Novik. Dragons and the Napoleonic wars - what's

Trust me, if that turns out to be the case, that list has profoundly
increased the literary enjoyment of unnumbered legions of people,
genre-geeks or not. If a.f.e had an Erastide Honours list, you'ld have

West Midlands.
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: Who's asking? Pretty women get told 6' tall, although
if the truth be faced among us I am really 5'11.5". Weight: 8 stone.
CURRENT HAIRCOLOR/STYLE: Same as it ever was. Same as it's been since
I was 6. Stupid hair. It is naturally red, though, unlike *some*
people. ;)
NATURAL HAIR COLOR: red! ahahaha! ahahahahahaha! ahahaha*cough*cough*.
EYE COLOR: green. or hazel. occasionally blue-grey. Bloodshot and red,
too, on occasion.
RELIGION: the bloody Facebook thing made me fill this in, so I put
"contemptuous atheist" just to annoy people. Really I'm an evangelical
Taoist, honest. Ommm.
SIBLINGS: one brother
CHILDREN: one
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Married.
OCCUPATION: I think my title actually is Web Developer. Although it
ought to be Minister of Algorithms. Or possibly Grandmaster Ram
Rod. :-)
PETS: Rory. Short for Rorschach. Stupid cat.
COMPUTER YOU'RE ON: Work laptop, which needs naming to fit in with my
Buffy characters naming scheme.

FAVORITES:
What are your favorite:

BOOKS: John Sandford, GRRM, Christopher Brookmyre. Not Big Dave any
more, since he can't write for toffee these days. Recently discovered
the Vlad Taltos books, although I must confess that they've been
recommended to me repeatedly over the last decade. PTerry.
MOVIES: The Game, The Usual Suspects, Seven, Sneakers.
POEMS: In Flanders Fields, which is pretty frigging depressing but
there it is. This Vicious Cabaret, which is technically a song but I
can't read music. The Lady of Shalott. I like epic stuff.
TELEVISION SHOWS: Top Gear. Buffy (still, after all these years).
That's about it, unless YouTube counts.
SONGS: don't listen to much these days. Bits of hip-hop. I recently
was nudged into listening to Seanan McGuire (sp?) who turned out to
have a wise word or two. Oh, and Feelin' Good by Nina Simone, which is
an anthem for life, yes it is.
BANDS/MUSICIANS: See the above :)
BOARD GAMES: Scotland Yard! Greatest game ever!
COMPUTER GAMES: I have no patience for games. So, Patience, really. :)
OTHER GAMES: Are there other types of games?
MAGAZINES: None, none, none.
PLACES TO VISIT: Well, Maeshafn, apparently...
FOOD: Pizza. I mean, there's other stuff, but it's just occupying time
between pizzas. See "weight" above. Fry's Turkish Delight and cheese
sandwiches too. I'd manage on just that lot if it wasn't that I'd get
scurvy, more's the pity.
COLORS: god, I don't know. Is this some sort of heraldry question?
Grue and bleen.
DRINKS: I have been known to imbibe ale from time to time. Dr Pepper
as well. Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?
MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS:
WHAT OTHER NEWSGROUPS DO YOU READ: a.f.grrm, occasionally. Do Google
Groups that aren't actually on usenet count? (it's a New World Order!)
All those ones I read are just boring technical things anyway....
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN READING AFE: Jesus, fourteen years. Started in
1994. Not continuously, though, which means I probably lose. This
time, about twenty minutes so far?
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE THREAD ON AFE: Klael's Army. (really!)
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES: erm, I read books and write code. Does
smoking and drinking count as a hobby? It's fun, I know that.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE DOING 10 YEARS FROM NOW: Approximately what I'm
doing right now this second, although perhaps while having a chest you
could crack rocks on and an Aston Martin.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING/SKILL THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE NOW THAT YOU WISHED

YOU POSSESSED: A bottomless bag of money. Normally my answer to this
would be different, but right now this second I possess everything I
want, I think.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE WORST THING ABOUT YOU: I work too hard. Isn't
that how you're supposed to answer this question in a job interview?
Other than that, nothing. I'm perfect, I am. Hey! Stop smirking over
there.
WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN A FRIEND: her smile.
HOW DO YOU PICTURE AFE: well, blimey, I hadn't for a while. Now...it's
like I was never away. How did this happen? Have you lot been having
fun without me? Inconsiderate gits.
DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION: How many beans make five?
WHAT SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES DO YOU USE: Facebook, on sufferance.
LugRadio has a MySpace. LinkedIn. I've got accounts on most of them,
not that I care much about most of them. Social networking is a PITA,
to be honest, most of the time, although it has the occasional
advantage. I have my own website for a reason :)

I've gone back to the original post for simplicity (nicely messing up

NAME: Simon Challands

YOUR ONLINE/NICKNAME: Usually Helvellyn where I don't just use my real
name.

WEB PAGE URL: http://www.helvellyn.plus.com

AGE: 31, alas

BIRTHDAY: Since that's the sort of thing that gets asked for proof of
ID etc. these days, it's probably best not to say. It's in the summer.

GENDER: Male

LOCATION: Right this instant, Greystoke, Cumbria.

HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 6'3", weight unknown (but too much)

CURRENT HAIRCOLOR/STYLE: Red / brown colour, style I've no idea. I
don't pay much attention to such things.

NATURAL HAIR COLOR: See above

EYE COLOR: Hazel

RELIGION: None

SIBLINGS: Unfortunately.

CHILDREN: None

RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single.

OCCUPATION: Stuck behind a computer pretending to work.

PETS: None there too.

COMPUTER YOU'RE ON: HP laptop, running a RISC OS emulator.

FAVORITES:
What are your favorite:

BOOKS: Just finished all the Patrick O'Brian ones, and they were
excellent.

MOVIES: Unsure - it very much depends on my mood. Generally escapist
in some sense.

POEMS: Don't know enough, although someone doing a comic adaption of
The Highwayman at a New Year's party sticks in the mind.

TELEVISION SHOWS: Hardly ever watch TV these days, so largely
irrelevant. Firefly was bloody good, but only ever saw it on DVD, so
don't know if it counts.

SONGS: No opinion - I could rant about rubbish I don't like, but I
don't have favourites for much.

BANDS/MUSICIANS: Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, various film soundtracks
(mostly John Williams and early James Horner, before he got too
repetetive), Loreena McKennit, Beethoven, Vivaldi.

BOARD GAMES: The occasional game of chess, but it is occasional. Does
Boggle count as a board game?

COMPUTER GAMES: Elite

OTHER GAMES: None to play, although I'll sometimes watch Carlisle
United.

MAGAZINES: Astronomy Now, Archive

PLACES TO VISIT: I'd be happy if I never had to set foot outside
Cumbria.

FOOD: Hard to think of anything. My tastes have two categories -
inedible, and things I like. The former (so far) isn't that much, but
includes Marmite.

COLORS: No preference, although for some reason I don't like yellow
much.

DRINKS:
Any decent beer ("real ale" if you must, but nothing else counts as
beer IMO). Black Sheep or some of the ones from Hesket Newmarket for
preference.

MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS:

WHAT OTHER NEWSGROUPS DO YOU READ: alt.fan.elite, various
comp.sys.acorn ones, uk.rec.walking.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN READING AFE: No idea. At least 10 years, but
very infrequently for the last 7 or so.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE THREAD ON AFE: My memory isn't up to that.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES: Disused mine exploration, walking,
astronomy, spending too much time in the pub.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE DOING 10 YEARS FROM NOW: Nothing. I am as lazy
as they come.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING/SKILL THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE NOW THAT YOU WISHED
YOU

POSSESSED: Being musical.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE WORST THING ABOUT YOU: Laziness

WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN A FRIEND: Trustworthiness.

HOW DO YOU PICTURE AFE: Unfortunately, I don't, other than as a Usenet
group. Nothing much on the Internet ever appears as more than face
value to me.

I'd be interested to know when you find out. There are quite a lot of

The memories. The nostalgia. The sitting in, was it Simon Clay's
