That is a recommended way of dealing with spam. (Recommended by the
folks in news.admin.net-abuse.*.) But is not perfect. Forging headers
is *trivial*. It is, in fact, *accepted procedure* for people who
moderate newsgroups. And contrary to your statements, Joe, it often
happens that dedicated spam sites have faked info there. It also happens
that schmucks forge their headers and accidentally or deliberately
list a different and real site. "xxx.com" does not spam. All the spams
purporting to be from there are forgeries.

There are two things wrong with this. One: if one of every 2000
people who sees a spam responds, the spammer can recoup the advertsing
costs. Boycotts on that scale are very difficult to carry out.
Two: some spammers, particularly the cyberpromo/savetrees ones, do
not advertise their own products mostly. They are paid by suckers
who think this is a good idea and suckers willing to pay them grow
on trees. (These same suckers probably think the "Make Money Fast"
posts work. Try it with Monopoly money sometime. See how long it
takes for the money to run out.)

Or if you're looking for some real fun and would like to annoy the crap out
of spammers and perhaps have an impact on their business <g>
Find out the contact address (I mean the street address) of the culprits,
drive, fly or walk there, apply for a job, then when you gain their
confidence, walk in to the computer room and unplug all their modems, then
laugh at the top of your voice and say "gotcha"

ooo, sorry I got a little carried away there <g>

Here are my filter files for the Agent mail reader. I will try to
update it daily and post it weekly. It's straightforward, name-only
filtering, with no "trick" filters. See FILTERS.TXT for more
information.
