First, the trade paperback edition of the DE had a print run of nearly
100,000. It has never had a second printing.
There were two different hardback editions of the DE: The first was a
small printing (under 3000 copies) of a regular trade edition, primarily
aimed at library sales. The second was a smaller size (in physical
dimensions but not in content) Science Fiction book club edition. I do not
know the size of the SF book club printing.
In addition, there was a British trade paperback printing and a German
hard back in two volumes. I do not know the print run of either edition.
ALL editions in the English language carried identical material, without
change, including pagination. The British edition used the same plates as
the American edition, as I understand it. The German edition carried no
more nor no less material, the only differences being those of
translation.
To my certain knowledge I have never signed any hardback edition of the
DE. If you wish your copy signed, see the most recent a.f.d FAQ.

I've never even seen a Hard Back DE. Believe me I have looked, the freaking
paperbacks are hard enough to find. Speaking of which, is there any new news on
republishing the DE? Have you been able to contact Brian Herbert, or KJ? They
may be the key to getting the DE published again.
No news as yet on getting the DE back into print. We have a good lead,
however, so keep your fingers crossed.

And that would make the copy you inscribed for me on 3/31/99 a fake? Egads!
Run for San Diego!! Face Dancers have invaded Fullerton.

Willis dear,
Any society which cancels the TV show "Crusade" even before it debuts
and keeps crap like "Touched by an Angel" in the top ten doesn't WANT
the DE.
We have met the enemy and they are us.

A little paranoid (or just eccentric) aren't we?
Dr. McNelly,
What do you feel about a brand new Dune Encyclopedia based on articles
submitted by Dune fans? A "Peoples' DE" if you will. I am sure there
would be no shortage of submittals. It doesn’t even have to be a real
book. A web site with an appropriate (and ever growing) number of
pages, hyperlinks, etc. would be very popular. It may even interest web
advertisers...

Dan,
What is little known about the DE is that the contributors were all (or
almost all) scholars of the highest order. These people are not credited
with the scope and depth of their study, skill, and intelligence. I don't
for one minute believe that even the afd faithful -- and there are some
smart buggers here -- could produce anything remotely approaching the work
that Willis directed. Gawd, what will be next: a trilogy of prequels written
by *mere* fans? Oh hell, I forgot, we get that on October sixth.
As to the good Doctor M. updating the original, I would do naked back flips
to see it happen. (Sam, no comments, thank you.) Sadly, Willis has said
(either directly or through Hitch) that he doesn't care to spend his
retirement engaged in such a demanding project -- and face it, the original
DE took YEARS to put together. True, Willis did express some interest in an
interactive CD-ROM based version of the original. Hitch put the kibosh on
that for fear of rampant pirating, a concern I equally share.

To be "matter of fact" about the world is to blunder into fantasy -- and
dull fantasy at that, as the real world is strange and wonderful.

With advance apologies for being abrupt...No. Thank you anyway, however.
