ugh. i have 3 days left before i go to college after a weeks break and i
have a 1500 word essay to write. it's not the writing that's the
problem. it's the BEGINNING! honestly, art books use the most flowery
language to say very little at all and i think i would rather read afd.
than start writing this essay. :(

i hate when there is nothing to argue about in an essay. i like english
essays or history essays where you can formulate an argument, present
both sides then come to a conclusion that you knew all along before even
writing the essay. which makes it a pretty pointless, but very easy,
exercise.

art essays, on the other hand, seem much more difficult. i think that i
might not know enough about the artist to write an essay but then i
think it's more likely that i would really rather look at a beautiful
picture. instead of arguing over whether the photos are self portraits
of the artists or if they are really about no one because she is always
the model. or over whether the artistic or the feminist view is correct.

personally, i suspect from what i have read in the art books (which are
not very helpful anyway because there is NEVER enough writing to explain
all those pictures) that even the artist doesn't know the answers to all
these questions. i think that she just wanted to make a point. i think
she used herself as the model out of convenience. i think maybe she
liked the fact that they are pretty pictures too. and most of all i
think that the art critiquey peeps made up all that Stuff to justify
calling the pictures fine art. as if being beautiful wasn't enough.

rae (can i write that in my essay? :)

Don't I know it, that was one reason I hated art class. I wanted to learn
how to improve my artistic skill.

My english lit teacher made us write an essay on why the chicken crossed the
road. Needless to say the test that was a part of was no more sane than
that. Too bad he wouldn't let us take the test home, he said something
about not wanting it to get posted all over the net.

Does it matter? If I like a piece of art I really don't care what the
artist does in his/her free time. (Free advertising for Tarnished
Imagines!) I love Ruth Thompson's work, shes very talented, but I really
don't care what her personal/religous/political beliefs are. I look at her
art, not her life.

That sounds about right.

It sounds about a senseless as my assignment a few years ago to 'write
instructions'. For absolutely anything. I think I ended up with some absurd
technique to 'catch a moonbeam' ;)
