I'm wondering what's with the copious amounts of spam? And what's the
use of the "report spam" button? I must have clicked it a thousand
times now (including one that I accidentally reported when it wasn't),
and they're still there. And they're quite unsightly. Plus they are
definitely not NC16. Is it worth bothering about the "report spam"
button at all then?

BTW, my birthday's on Oct 3. So that's something random to look
forward to. (Note it's different from "hatchday" for me.)

Very few of us use Google Groups. But I would iagine that whenever you
report spam to them, they'll take a look at it manually to see what it
is. However, since the only reliable way they have of blocking
something is by blocking an emaiil address of name, and these spammers
have randomly generated names and addresses for each post, it's
difficult, short of banning all access from a single ISP, to stop the
spam.

I just say ignore it. If you respond, you just do their job for them.
After a while, if nobody rises to the bait, they'll get bored and go
away.

And then there's Fruiting Day. And Awakening Day. Both of mine are

Well, it's not really a "true" hatchday... It's when I first joined
this whole thing, that I consider as a hatchday, and I treasure it as
much as my actual birthday. Of course, if I do find my true hatchday,
I'll rename this something else.

I don't suppose you start at 35 kyu like Go players do, do you? (That

How is it out-of-date?

Also, it seems that someone had an attack of the non-breaking spaces
(0xA0; space with the top bit turned on).

It isn't really.
Not in the sense that it can be /changed/ to be better, or anything. I
just meant that it was old when I was new.

The Dragon Code has been around since... forever... I remember
exploring the site a little and finding a DC1 code that went back
years before I got online.

You're first fruiting day here is exactly one year and no days after
you joined. Then every year on the same day. I'm not sure whether I'm
a fruit or something else by now. My first post is all the way back on
Mon Nov 12, 2001 at 11:54:34PM GMT. Though it didn't show up in the
group until the following day. Would that make it Nov 12 or Nov 13?

I refer to my birthday sometimes as my hatching day. It just makes
sense to me since in nature when an animal hatches it is considered
the first day of their life, and the day one is born (one's birthday)
is considered the same. So hatchie day (or hatching day if you prefer)
for me is the same as birthday.

What about for me? I started posting many months after I started reading.

Explanation: In the early days I don't think my stomach would have
withstood actually posting to the group; reading it was about the limit.
Indeed for the first few weeks my reading was limited by how long I
could go without vomiting (a limit which I almost always managed to stay
under). Nowadays the effect is very slight; less than that of going in
a lift. Damned if I know what causes it. It must be love ;-).

Any animal that hatches outside its mother's body must of course be born
before hatching. Maybe the time you start reading should be called your
group birthday and the day you start posting should be called your
hatching day?

We apologize if your gut is terrorized by the sheer amount of
draconity present here.

That depends on one's definition of "birth". Personally, I consider
hatching as birth, not egg-laying. As a result, differentiating the
terms "birthday" and "hatchday" just seems silly to me.

Of course, YMMV.

What about fish?
Technically the egg is fertilized after its "laid."

IMO, I'll put hatching day and birthday together, since they are both
days when the hatching/baby/calf/what-have-you comes out of the egg,
while laying and fertilization are simply processes. No one remembers
the day when your egg was fertilize - a lot don't even realize it.

Oh, I'm in the same boat you are. I was just pointing out a

I simply consider birthday/hatchday the moment you are aware and able to
move around as a single entity, not leeching off of another. While in a
womb you leech off the mother and your own systems are all disabled till
'born', and while in an egg the same thing happens, your blood vessels
connect to the yolk and live off of it but your own systems are mostly
disabled. For eggs, you are fully alive a few minutes before the egg
actually breaks, but it's such a short period of time it shouldn't
matter. The moment the un-hatched creature struggles around inside the
egg to move, and is breathing, heart beating, etc. all systems
disconnected from the yolk, it is now 'hatched'.

In short you are born or hatched the moment you are no longer completely
dependant on something else to keep your primary body functions working.
Once you can breath, heartbeat, move, etc. without some other force
doing it for you, you're born/hatched.

It's not terror; I don't know what it is. From the lack of reaction it
seems that no-one else experienced the same thing. :-(

You would be able to discover this if your couples didn't have sex for
fun the same way as they did for reproduction. Kigdatsi do not combine
functionality thus so we cannot reproduce when not wanting to and we
know our exact conception date and we can replace internal fertilisation
with artificial external fertilisation without much disadvantage.

Although I don't know what's a Kigdatsi, I can more-or-less catch what
you mean. However, I'm not sure that combining functions does inhibit
knowledge of conception, unless it is possible to monitor internal
processes, since anything else would lead to an error margin of at
least a single "reproduction attempt".

See "Bene Gesserit" or even "Tleilaxu" :)

Hehe, yes, I got the idea from there. I'm thinking more of the Bene
Gesserit, however, since the Bene Tleilax just use them as a whole.

Read the entire series. When's the next "Legacy of Dune" book coming
out?

No. If sex-for-reproduction is separated in time by more than the
gestation period, then conception date can be easily derived without
further monitoring.
