I feel that the traditional internet forums are dying. Maybe it's a
dying medium because something else have replaced the needs and
curiosities of people in the same way emails and text messages have
completed taken over writing letters to each other. Maybe the mega
social medias like Twitter, reddit and Facebook are draining people's
interests for dragon forums, or keeping them in their walled gardens. I
don't know.

What I do know is that there are probably many new places that have
popped up since last time I tried to catalogue all dragon forums[1], and
probably many places that I simply don't know about. When I tried to
catalogue all dragon related sites I reached about 400 before I gave up,
and I estimated at that time that there would be around 800 such sites
on the internet so there's definitively a lot out there.

But it's so hard to find these resources. Things like Dragons from the
Analog and Digital World[2] are what I would call gems of the dragon
fandom. But if you were to search for dragon film and game reviews I
don't think you'd be able to find that site through a search engine no
matter how hard you tried.

So that's why I've been increasingly thinking of making a website to
host a directory of dragon sites of sorts. To make it more easy to
navigate the sites of the fandom, and find new places in an increasingly
harder to navigate web. From what I understand there used to be such a
site called Dragons Must Be Here by someone named Adam. That site is
sadly no longer online and has been replaced by some sort of shill blog
that makes no sense to me. But I love the idea it represented.

Do you know of any ideas, sites, forums, or resources that are of
interest for such a directory? I want to brainstorm ideas here.

One of the ideas I keep coming back to is hosting an archive of dragon
related sites that are no longer actively maintained by their authors.
Yes, I know Internet Archive exists, but it's slow, un-searchable and
often incomplete.

Another idea I keep having is noting down and preserving the history of
the fandom. Like how people pretending to be dragons weren't really a
thing on alt.fan.dragons before Blackburn.

Hi! I agree with you that the traditional forums are dying.
Your idea of attempting to create a directory of dragon sites is a good one. The alt.fan.dragons website was an amazing website back in the day and was filled with lots of links. Unfortunately, many of those have indeed been lost to time.

I unfortunately will not much use in compling a list of current internet forums that are in operation. I
I have managed to reconnect with several old fruits via various platforms since I returned in October but other than some general dragon Facebook groups I watch, this is the only dragon forum I am active in.

Oh, this is a wonderful idea! I would love to browse a directory of dragon sites. I don't presently know of any such resource myself. I fear I have gotten so out of touch with the community!

What is this about people pretending to be dragons on alt.fan.dragons? I'm an otherkin dragon myself, was there some time on alt.fan.dragons where people weren't otherkin?

I am also trying similar task days before when one of the members in my community asked about a list for living dragon forums. But I am wondering about the most appropriate methodology of this. I tried only manual searches and following through links of each site. But this get me to only no more then a dozen. How have you achieved cataloging so many sites? That's so amazing!

I would propose an indexed and well-documented guide-style encyclopedia. Besides just logging and categorizing these sites, something more helpful to newcomers and even some old fruits will be a guide that can be checked to find the sites or resources they need. While I failed to give the guy in my community a complete list he asked for, I tried to go through the ones I have found and provide a short description for each, like when and why was it established, is it active now, what to expect on that site, etc. In my opinion such auxiliary information is as important as the list itself, as to save the readers the time to looking through hundreds of sites to find the ones they want.

There is Alfandria.net which is where Alfandria MUCK is hosted. Its not a
forum but a chat system. Rayanth and Silvermist were kind enough to take
running it over when I got tired of keeping the lights on a few years ago.
Its pretty slow/dead now but you can find a few people to talk to. If
anyone wants to take a group and breath life or maybe some fire back into
it, I'm sure you will be welcome!

I agree with others that this is a wonderful idea, and one that the draconic community would benefit very well from. It is sad to see the era of forums diminishing as more fast-paced and instant satisfaction social media takes over. I hope to see this this project fill with resources and am looking forward to your progress!
