"Flop! LTNS!" Odetta *huggles* Flop hello.

"Alternative" (I hate that term) Heavy Metal, and Soft Rock on a
song-to-song basis. I don't like most of it, but there's some that I
do. I also like some "Oldies" and classical.

> 2. Why do you like that type of music? (eg Tune, Lyrics, Image, etc.)

I look for lyrical content first in a song, then how it sounds. I also
like music that coinsides with my current mood.

I only get to pick one??? Well :P on you...and I mean that in the most
positive light. :)

Sarah McLachlin, Peter Gabriel, Tom Petty, and Tori Amos. And all the
singers in the bands below.

> 4. What is your favorite band?

Once again, only one??

Ben Folds Five, Counting Crows, R.E.M., +Live+, Deep Forest, Enya, Simon
and Garfunkel, They Might be Giants, U2, The Why Store, Metallica, Led
Zepplin,
> 5. What is your least favorite band/artist/composer etc.?

Oasis, Ween, Green Day, and Hansen!

> 6. What type of music can you _not_ stand at all?

Country and rap.

You forgot one! What's your favorite songs?!?!

Guns and Roses - November Rain
R.E.M. - It's the End of the World as We Know It, Leave, and Me In Honey
Ben Folds Five - Underground, Uncle Walter, Philosophy, Brick, and Smoke
Counting Crows - Murder of One, Round Here, Anna Begins, Recovering the
Satelites, and Monkey (because he mentions Ben Folds :)
The Why Store - Lies and Lack of Water
A-Ha - Take on Me (aaah! Attack of the 80's!)
Peter Gabriel - Land of Confusion
Simon and Garfunkel - Old Friends/Bookends, Sound of Silence, Me and
Julio Down by the Schoolyard, Scarborogh Fair
U2 - With or Without You, Stay, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
Ugly Kid Joe - Cats in the Cradle
The Nixons - Sister
Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World
Gravity Kills - Goodbye
Enigma - Return to Innocence
Devo - Whip It and Go
B 52's - Roam and Rock Lobster
Candlebox - You
Dave Matthews Band - Ants Marching, Satelite, and Say Goodbye
Cake - I Will Survive
Aerosmith - Dream On and Hole in my Soul
Alice in Chains - Don't Follow

There's a ton more, but I'll stop before I go crazy and eat more
bandwidth. :)

"Most Soft Rock, and all "Classics from the Crypt." Ya know, like
Toccata and Fuge in D Minor, Night on Bald Mountain, Danse Macabre? That

Hey everybody! A question for all interested dragons: What music does
everyone here listen to? If you're interested at all in answering some of
the following questions I think it would be quite interesting to see the
results:

1. What is your favorite type of music? (eg Alternative, Rap, Country
etc.)

2. Why do you like that type of music? (eg Tune, Lyrics, Image, etc.)

3. Who is your favorite artist? (Singer or Composer depending on type of
music)

4. What is your favorite band?

5. What is your least favorite band/artist/composer etc.?

6. What type of music can you _not_ stand at all?

Thanks! Hope you have fun seeing the results of this!

Okay, why not?

>1. What is your favorite type of music? (eg Alternative, Rap, Country

Alternative and rock are my favorites. I also enjoy jazz and
classical.

>2. Why do you like that type of music? (eg Tune, Lyrics, Image, etc.)

Sometimes music, sometimes lyrics, depends on the song.

>3. Who is your favorite artist? (Singer or Composer depending on type of
>music)

Hmm... dont' think I really have one.

>4. What is your favorite band?

Same as above. Don't have one.

>5. What is your least favorite band/artist/composer etc.?

Wouldn't have a clue. Anything I don't like, I just don't listen to,
and forget about.

>6. What type of music can you _not_ stand at all?

Gangsta rap, most R&B, some country starts getting on my nerves, and
that so-called "Christian rock" that sounds like mid to late 80's pop
music...

All of it. My radio is tuned to a country station and a mix/alternative
station.

I like music I can understand, as in actually hear the words, and I like
stuff that isn't two techno-tweaked, mostly anyways...

Many people... Garth Brooks, Eagles, Peter, Paul and Mary to name a few

That bad poetry stuff put to really loud drumbeats that people try to pawn
off as a type of music.

particular bands, and particular albums.

can't resist talking about music, so here we go :)

> 1. What is your favorite type of music? (eg Alternative, Rap, Country

Techno, ambient, jungle/drum'n'bass, rap, classic house, trance, happy
hardcore [aka rave music, or it used to be anyhow], etc.

> 2. Why do you like that type of music? (eg Tune, Lyrics, Image, etc.)

there isn't a reason why I like a particular *type* of music, only reasons
why I like particular tunes... on average, though:

techno,- because it's original & intelligent compared to other forms of
ambient music (ie. the tracks don't all sound basically the same as with,
say, happy hardcore, guitar music, etc.)

["intelligent" drum'n'bass fits somewhere in between these two categories]

jungle - because it's just so damn tuff ;) well, i like the emphasis on
the key elements of music: bass sounds, repetitivity.
some tracks key into that "dark" vibe as well, kind of drawing
you into a cyberpunkish world where nobody cares about you and
nothing matters but the beat.

rap - loops (sometimes of other people's music, but they usually take
the BEST bits) are always good, repetition is the key :) Some
loops like the piano in mobb deep's track of a few years back
(overused since...) are really haunting etc.
to some extent, the worldview... it's not mine, but i like to be
taken to other worlds sometimes ;)
also, especially, clever verbal patterns, references, and the
rhythms of speech; here's one of my favourite quotes...

"...I bring the element H with the 2, so ya owe me what is coming when I'm
raining on your new parade. It's just mind over matter, and what matters
is that the mind isn't guided by the punished shade..."
[de la soul / i am i be]

classic- by which i mean, basically, old hit house tunes ;) well, partly
house the nostalgia thing, plus a bunch of the below...

happy - because it's just so damn ecstatic (there is no other word
hard- that's really appropriate)... makes you feel good & forget
core everything else. [and no, i didn't take anything illegal ;)]

> 3. Who is your favorite artist? (Singer or Composer depending on type of
> music)

aphex twin, moby, enya, live, de la soul,...

[but there are MANY great tracks by artists that i've never heard of and
never will again... and other artists who ARE a bit well known who i
wouldn't call my favourites but have made incredible music (ltj bukem, for
one)...]

BTW, I don't think most of these count as "composers". I sort of think
composers are people who write music for others to play... *shrugs* the
term "producer" might be more appropriate. or, so that you don't then have
to do "singer, composer, or producer", it might be better to say
"musician" ;)

> 4. What is your favorite band?

Ooops, I guess live and de la soul fit under this category... *shrugs* I
don't really see why it's separate...

> 5. What is your least favorite band/artist/composer etc.?

none in particular.

> 6. What type of music can you _not_ stand at all?

anything that's overtly, blatantly commercial and was created by a
marketing team. (i don't mean stuff like oasis, prodigy etc.... WORSE than
that... ;)

well, some of this i can actually listen to ("barbie girl" made me laugh)
but i wouldn't ever buy it, it's more a moral objection than a musical
one.

also, I usually like opera music until they start screeching (women) or
growling (men)... ;)

and i am not a fan of accordions ;)

It's easier to say what I don't like than what I do (see below). Each
piece has to have the right combination of the above factors. My music
library varies from Pink Floyd to A Tribe Called Quest to Ozzy Osbourne
to Bruce Hornsby to Beck to Led Zeppelin to P.M. Dawn to Megadeth...

>3. Who is your favorite artist? (Singer or Composer depending on type of

Rush, without question. But that doesn't equate to "I like all of their
music".

>5. What is your least favorite band/artist/composer etc.?
>

>6. What type of music can you _not_ stand at all?

Country. I find the "country" accent to be infinately annoying, even if
the music is good, which is rare. There is little or no originality to
be found in country music. Unlike many other kinds of music, it seems
to me that you cannot differentiate one country music singer from another,
except by actual voice. Remove the vocals, and Sawyer Brown sounds like
Brooks & Dunn and hundreds of other bands who sound the same. And very
few country artists seem to write their own material--they're just pretty
faces and (sometimes) pretty voices to sell the song. I will say that I
do respect Garth Brooks, if for no other reason than the passion he has
for his music and his performance of it, and he comes from a non-country
background.

Anyone care to add/counter to this?

I love almost any kind of music except country, rap, and heavy metal. Love

Off to the side there is a sudden disturbance in the air. It starts
to swirl and there can be a faint buzzing noise heard. Pops and
crackles are accompanied by small lightning flashes and a mini
whirlwind is spinning in place.

It whirls faster and faster, and multicoloured sparks are arcing out
with ever increasing speed and frequency and the buzzing noise has
increased in pitch so as to be quite irritating.

The tension is increasing to an unbearable limit, when

BANG!

A huge lightning strike flashes, momentarily blinding all present.
When the smoke clears, a dazed human female can be seen.

"Oh dear, I hope everyone is OK, that spell was a bit vigourous

*looking around trying to recognise Odetta* "Sorry I am a bit dizzy,

Still not 100% she sits down to rest.

I don't know... there is certainly some "popularised rubbish" that would
fit into that category, though (warren g, snoop, etc.) although there's
also a lot of good rap around even these days, imo including some of the
popular stuff. I think production is tighter today as well, but a *lot* of
the lyrics are lacking, unfortunately... :( But there is always good Stuff

And people from the 80s like KRS-ONE are still making records :)

Odd thing, though, I don't remember ever hearing a rap track that even
mentioned dragons. At all. (Hrm... thinks through other music... actually
I can't immediately think of any in other forms of music... so maybe not

Dragons are mentioned in many types of music. Certainly in Rock (many
different types), and also in Classical music. I am not sure about rap
specifically though.

Wyrm has had the good sense to distinguish real rap artistry (the

Ah... Hrm, never heard of that. Unfortunately, from your description, I
have to say that it sounds eminently missable, at least from a
music-quality point of view :)

Talking about TV Dragons, we've always got Tricky on Saturday mornings!

Tricky is a Dragon who hosts his own 'kids' show on Saturday mornings on
ITV. He has a silent sidekick called Purdey who hatched out in the first
show. Tricky is just coming to terms with his dragonhood.

Hmm...hadn't come across that one..mainly 'cos I'm usually busy
Saturday mornings. Will have to take time out to see what its like :)

As far as the music thing goes, I don't recall having seen any
classical or semi-classical works that feature dragons. (not that my
classical knowledge is that great <grin>) There are one or two tracks on
some "new world" stuff that I have that mentions dragon in the title,
but thats about as far as it goes.

There is of course *the* famous one........

Eodrakken wanders over to the music thread, her Walkdragon
(TM) softly playing "Junk the Magic Dragon" (a very, very,
VERY early Marilyn Manson tune).

She takes off the headphones, thinks a moment, and starts talking:
"Let's see...I like many kinds of music. Heavy metal and classical
are my favorites, I love the way they evoke such strong emotion.

"I like it when I can identify with the lyrics of songs...and when
the lyrics are poetry unto themselves.

"As to what the music itself sounds like, apart from the words, I
like Sublime and that sort of thing... Neo-ska, would it be? And
also in that category comes heavy metal, "hard alternative"...

"There are so many things I love. Even a little rap and R&B
mixed in with my Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Chopin, and Marilyn
Manson.

"In other words, I listen to any music I find appealing, without
much thought to what *kind* of music it is. My CD collection is
very eclectic."

She looks like she's finished, but suddenly she adds:
"Oh, and I have a special fondness for Gilbert & Sullivan, and
Tim Curry (yes, he sings too)."

Well, I'm not a big fan of that type of music to begin with, and they
remind me a little too much of the New Kids on the Block (remember
them?). Especially since I've run across too many pages on the web of
12 or 13 year-old girls who are madly in love with them (and I'm
_really_ tired of hearing that midi of their song, whatever it is) and
it seems like people are in love with them just like they were with

Did they have songs on American popular radio before late 1996? If so,
I may have heard a song by them but never caught the name. I don't
listen to radio anymore, there's no good stations around here that a
Walkman can pick up.

Okay, qualifier: I may have heard songs by either of them, but not know it
because I never caught the name of the group. In any case, while I have

Not most. Some. I remember responding positively to at least half

Title
Nelvana: going into battle: (Blazing dragons, animated
cartoon).
Source
Animation Magazine. v. 9, Oct./Nov. 1995, p. 26-7.
Abstract
The writer discusses Blazing Dragons, the latest animation
series from Nelvana Limited in collaboration with Terry Jones, one of
the
visionaries of Monty Python fame and a writer of children's fiction.
Blazing
Dragons is the epic tale of a battle between knights and
dragons--told from the dragon's point-of-view. Commissioned
by ITV network in the U.K.--where it is to begin in the spring of
1996--it is
a coproduction by Nelvana and Ellipse.

It isn't that much more intelligent. Pseudo-intelligent perhaps... but you
have little more semantic content there. All it demonstrates is that you
prefer a more highbrow vocabulary "offends my ear" to the decidedly
lowbrow "sucks". :)

Actually, you are making clear that these views only hold for you - so
it's equivalent to "I think Alanis sucks" rather than just "Alanis sucks".
:)

I'm not sure there really *is* a more intelligent way to talk about
matters of personal taste like this... largely, I think not...

Or does "offends my ear" really mean something different to "sucks"? Could
something "offend your ear" and not suck, or not offend your ear and suck?
Maybe that's what you meant... something like "I think Alanis sucks
because she's a bit whiney"?

Maybe I should write a paper on the difference in meaning behind "offends
my ear" and "sucks".

On the other hand, maybe I should hurry up with reading newsgroups and
actually do some work.

you who don't read comics, Pamela Lee with horns, hooves and tail), but
it'd be a demonic angel. :)

Then again. Seeing as none of them can come up with any good songs, I doubt
it. Besides, they've got managers, PR Agents, and song-writers for all that
stuff!

Did I mention anything about the quality of said logo?

Actually, I did. I mentioned it in connection to Rob Liefeld. This
automatically means "really, really bad." Whoever at Marvel gave him
Captain America to write/draw must have been on crack. Luckily it
wore off.

(Yes, _you too_ can gain superpowers! Just let Captain America, symbol of
the patriotic fighting spirit of a once-proud nation, feed you some of
his (green Day-Glo) blood! Yes! What a wonderful message to all the

This is true. Many of whom should be fired as a disgrace to their
respective professions. Except the PR agent, who is apparently the
public relations equivalent of the Second Coming.

I'm familiar with Joni, but... who is Bjork?? <g>

Since we're discussing music -- anyone out there like Fiona Apple? I
find her music... "haunting". <G>

Two other's I find "haunting", btw, are Enya and Tracy Chapman. ;)
