I have been broken by...
SERVER UPGRADES!!!
Here's the deal: The company I work for is upgrading one of our servers,
because the old server is out of date, Linux distro has no more support,
etc.
Old server has DirectAdmin, new server has cPanel.
That's just where the fun begins
For the past MONTH we have been trying to get stuff transferred.
FIRST they screwed up, because they copied the files too early, before
trying to make it go live. So, we had to scrap it all, start all over.
NEXT, the DA to CP converter tool didn't pick up all the databases, so we
had to MAN-U-FRICKIN-AL-LY move a bunch of db....
NEXT, we found out that PHP was a CGI script, instead of a Binary
install. Also, there was no GD (image creation etc), so all our captcha
stuff on the server was broken. This required a recompile. Oh,
mod_rewrite, used for Drupal, and search engine friendly urls
So, we get that set up.
two weeks after the sites are transferred
so now we can start re-pointing DNS.
So, we start doing that...
and then we start to get angry phone calls...
Seems like Direct Admin allows the account username to be able to receive
emails...
cPanel doesn't like that
So, we had to RECOPY the emails from the old server to the new server,
and then move the 'account' emails, to a newly created email, with the
same username, created inside the account...
OH
Yesterday, two network switches DIED there.
once that was back up
we tried to get SSL installed
IT NO WORK
ffs
grrrr
We've already lost two customers because of this...
And it's looking like we may lose more customers....
But, one thing to look forward to...
This friday...
I get...
on a bus!
And I get to go to visit my gf... and spend Christmas and New Years with
her! ^^

Oh, i almost forgot to mention...
This new server, is under pretty much constant attack. There are a ton of
script kiddies that are trying to break into the IP block.

Well, that's always nice..... I've got nobody in my life right now (nor
has there been in way too long, about 2 million years) so I don't even
have that to look forward to.....

Sounds like something that doesn't work..... I'd prefer something
called "succeed2ban" myself };=8�

hehe. Fail2Ban works like this:
It scans log files, for failed logins
If it detects too many failed logins from a given IP, it bans them
This way, it stops people trying to break in through brute force in their
tracks!
*murrs and giggles at a memory* hehe, the server admins lost the root
password... and ended up getting themselves banned *laughs more* It was
one of the 'new' techs hehehe
Oh, the server finally got finished setting up. Now all we gots to worry
about is mail settings, and letting the clients know about the new email
settings that some of them need :D
*serious look* it's a shame that we lost a few customers cuz of this...
but what can you do...

Heh.
Trust me, it's a LOT nicer than DirectAdmin... For example, you don't
have to drop (undocumented!) into a user login to be able to email all
your users... or to setup a user's dns... etc etc...
cPanel is a lot more like WebMin... which i LOVE.
Also, setting up SSL is a no brainer... We have to have the paid admins
do the SSL stuff on the DA server....

Well, first I'd have to find someone who's ok with me being who I am, even
if she's not otherkin herself..... And as I'm very withdrawn in person,
that might be extremely difficult..... But thanks. <Hugs back>
