First, the story:

"While out napping on a sunny rock, a coppery-scaled Dragon finds her rest
suddenly disturbed by a large splash in the near by lake. Could it be the
reclusive water Dragon she has heard such fascinating stories about? If
only she hadn't been in the midst of such a wonderful dream... she might
have awakened quickly enough to catch sight of him!"

http://ebon-dragon.com/images/Disturbance.jpg

As you can see I've tried a somewhat different pose here. This is the first
time I've ever tried to do a Dragon looking back over it's shoulder before.
And while there are some things I think could definitely be improved upon
(as always) I don't think it came out *too* badly. I was really rather
pleased with her coloration.

Very nice... although the splashing water seems a bit too solid. Too
opaque. [shrug] Few people can draw splashing water well. I know I can't.
But nice job on the new pose! She looks pretty good.

Her hues were heavenly. I liked the pose. Overall the picture could've had
just a tip of something undefined in the water causing her to see a fish? a
small dragon? a child?
In other words her imagination because she saw something albeit unknown
entering the water. My three pence worth.

It is another wonderful picure. The water looks a bit frozen though.
The draggie is quite well done, that posture is hard to draw because it doesn't
work so well if you can't draw heads in 3-d! There was a time when I couldn't,
only 2-d side drawing. };=3)~

Yeah, I was thinking that about the splashing water as well, but I haven't
yet figured out how to fix it. But thanks to now having 140G of harddrive
space I have the room to keep all of my uncompressed Photoshop files (this
one was something like 37Megs) in their own "little" folder until I can fix
them :} **does happy Dragon dance**

Funny, I was thinking of doing something along those lines last night, but
it was going on 2am and I think I was just too tired for the thought to do
more than just pass through. But as I told Lux, I still have the
uncompressed file and so I might go ahead and add that later...

That's really good :) I think you have the pose just right, although
the water splash looks a little odd, but then i suppose you can't
persaude a splash to stay around long enough to draw as a reference :)

All of the water, or just the splash?

Tell me about it! This one took forever to get the perspective right. I
think I went through 4-5 different versions before I got one I was satisfied
with. Not only the head but the curve of the neck and such. One thing I've
started doing is using some of my (literally) hundreds of Dragon statues
(nearly 300 at last count!) as "models." I can turn them at different
angles to see how the perspective I'm going for is supposed to look.

Yeah, that splash is one of the "things" I thought could use some
improvement. I'm going to do a Google search later and see if I can find
any sort of reference work on how to do that better. But since I already
had the idea bouncing around in my head I had to get it "out" before it
drove me buggy! }:-8}

The splash realy.

I've thought about it. But I haven't drawn much recently, I also don't have
anywhere near 300! I have 6, plus 3 beanies.

Beautiful as ever, it's good to see you trying out new colourations and this
one has certainly worked well. However it could just be me but I think that
splash may be at a slightly different angle to that of the plane of the water.

It's supposed to be at a different angle. The water is horizontal and the
splash is moving vertically. Are you referring to the ripples? I know
those are slightly off which is something I plan on working on... or am I
missing something?

I just finished adding the tip of a tail seen amidst the splashing water to
indicate the "reclusive water Dragon."

I don't know, maybe it's just me but it seems like the splash is tilting
forwards where as the water is flat. It could just be the way the dragons
diving into the water.

Thank you. This is Kodoth, from Fire Mountain Clan. She's... well, I don't
know if you would really call her a singer since we don't have a spoken
language, but it's the closest word I can think of do describe what she
does... which is far more than humming.

But then again, if birds and whales can "sing" I guess non-verbal Dragons
can, too. So yes... She is a Singer for the Clans.

It is through song and the visualizations that accompany it that we pass
along our history from one generation to the next. I guess you could almost
call her a Bard.

Oooh, I like. Glad to see you're playing with poses a little. I like the
colors; they're all bright and cheery-looking, giving the picture a lot of
warmth. My only advice would be to not rely so heavily on texturizing when
you color. You remember that I said I really have no problem with digital
coloring as a whole (that's what I use myself, anyway,) but I think it's a
little too easy to rely too heavily on predefined textures.

Allow me to use two of my own pictures as an example. Here are two pictures
that are both completely basic as far as how they were actually drawn (I
doodled them in about one or two minutes each hoping to pass them off as
chibi,) but compare how I colored them.

http://www.blazeshadow.net/kjorteo/gpictures/kjchibi.jpg
http://www.blazeshadow.net/kjorteo/gpictures/kjconstruction.jpg

Basically, in the first one I actually tried (except for the background,
which was just an Infinite Fish thing,) whereas in the second I just
bucket-filled and then used Paint Shop Pro's texturizer to make everything
look bumpy. (The helmet and sweat drop were a bucket fill with a gradient
isntead of a solid color, and the blue eye was a coincidence caused by the
JPEG compression.)

I never had any high aspirations for that second picture--it's just a stupid
little graphic to accompany "Under construction" pages for my website.
Because of this, I wasn't particularly motivated to go out of my way to make
it look good, hence my just whipping out the bucket fill and texturiser.
But...look at it. It's flat. It also says nothing for the skills of the
artist, except maybe "I know how to use the texturizer command."

My personal opinion (feel free to disagree) is that relying more on
appropriate placing of light and shadow does a lot more to add depth to the
image than use of predefined textures. (Not that I have the write to say
anything about light and shadow...oh well, maybe I'll get better at that
someday.) Look at
http://www.blazeshadow.net/kjorteo/gpictures/kjwhatnowc2.jpg (this is the
one /without/ the fur texture on me) and compare myself to the door or to
the sea for a more direct example of this.

Getting back to the actual point, I'm basically trying to warn you not to
get too comfortable with predefined textures. I think they could very well
be the cause of the sense of sameness I see in a lot of your work (and that
we discussed in the Romeo & Juliet thread.) Textures are bery convenient,
but also very dangerous; the texturizer never challenges itself to improve;
it just applies a texture when you press the button.

In this particular picture, I actually don't mind the effects on the grass,
water, or sky (those all look beautiful,) but the rock leaves something to
be desired, and I think it ends up making the dragon look a lot flatter than
it would have if you relied on applying more light and shadow instead.
Still, it looks very nice overall, and I would still really like to know how
you do ground shadows, since I am so horrible at those (
http://www.blazeshadow.net/kjorteo/gpictures/kjmomentc.jpg . ^>.>^;;)

Aren't you?

But it's the same criticism over and over and over. You've already made it
pretty plain that you don't care for my style of art or my techniques.
(Which is fine, I never expected it to appeal to everyone.) You've told me
you think I'm fast becoming stagnant in my style, that all of my pictures
look the same and that it seems all I am doing is drawing the same Dragon
over and over again.

First, you thought I was relying on Bryce too much. But I don't use Bryce.
Now it's you don't like the use of pre-defined textures... well I don't use
pre-defined textures that much. The vast majority of the textures I use I
created myself.

I don't have a problem with genuine constructive criticism I've already
changed a couple of things on this picture based on the advice of others,
and am looking for ways to change other parts. My "Romeo and Juliet" was
heavily re-modeled based on the critiques I got from others both here and
elsewhere. However, as I said above, you make the exact same complaints
every single time. To me that doesn't sound like 'constructive"
criticism... it sounds like harping.

Personally, I'm beginning to wonder if you are pointing out things you don't
care for merely the purpose of criticism alone. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's
the impression I'm getting.

So you don't care for my style. Okay. That's fine with me. Again, I never
expected it to appeal to everyone, nor do I think it should. But I do think
this is something we are going to have to agree to disagree on. And please
know I'm not angry, nor am I hurt. I'm just tired of having the exact same
conversation again and again and again.

I like what I do with my art, and I like the way it looks. I post it in the
hope that some might find it enjoyable to look at. For those that don't...
well, just ignore it and look for something more in lines with their
personal tastes.

Actually, I never meant to harp on anything, that's just a flaw of mine; I
always, always have explain things at least a billion times in as many
different ways as I can think of. That's probably a personality disorder,
coming from general insecurity and the inability to say anything without
fear of being misinterpreted. That has nothing to do with with your art.

<snip the rest>

I'm really not trying to generate ill feelings here. Believe it or not, I
do like your art, especially the last two pieces. They seriously reflect a
maturing of your style and ability. Even if I didn't like them, one look at
anything I've ever drawn should automatically disqualify me from being able
to complain about anyone else's work. But again, I /do/ like them.

I could try to defend myself, but another flaw of mine is that I tend to get
a little defensive sometimes, and I'm worried I might accidentally spark a
further conflict as a result. (I have a history of not being able to convey
things without accidentally hurting people, actually.) So instead, I'm just
going to say I'm sorry for repeating myself unnecessarily, I'm sorry for the
incorrect guesses on where your effects come from, and I'm sorry I gave you
the overall impression you just described. I never wanted to sound like
that, and I feel absolutely horrible now. I shall henceforth refrain from
saying anything, and I hope that will help calm things down and make
everything right again.

There never was anything to calm down. As I said I wasn't angry, or even
upset. I was somewhat irritated, but that's not the same thing. There is
also no reason for you to feel horrible. I just wanted to let you know

Oh, I also wanted to mention that there was no need to refrain from pointing
out technical errors if you should happen to catch something I didn't, or
making suggestions on something to either add or subtract from the scene to
"tighten" it up. Just please don't continue making the exact same comments

Sorry i'm so late in replying to this, i'm a bit behind in my e-mails, and
have only just seen this wonderful picture!
Well, what can i say? i think this is probably the best dragon you have
drawn so far. i think it's the way you've drawn the head and neck that makes
me feel this one is SO good! Especially the shadow of the horn against her
head! And i love the colouring of the dragon too, especially the way her
head stands out against the sky. She almost looks alive, and in 3-D, and it
seems that at any second her head will turn back around, and come out of the
screen! *grins*

Oh, now i remember that happening in my school days, and it was the most
aggravating thing that could happen to you, especially on those hot
summery days, when you spent the last hour watching the clock tick
closer to the end of some really boring class or other, then you finally
get on the bus, and have to put up with all the tossers on there, then
one of them really gets on the driver's nerves, so he turns back and
goes all the way to school again.

It would be so much easier if he'd just thrown him off! At least the
rest of us would have got home on time. And maybe the idiot would have
got eaten by something large and carnivorous while waiting for the next
bus. But then brittish bus drivers never were commended for their
intelligence

Grrr.

That's the plan, and have the principal talk to them and identify the
troublemaker(s) and then the school gets to deal with them.....

Not necessarily a lack of intelligence, but from the training they get.
I'm not allowed to let anyone off the bus anywhere but at a set stop,
and the routes and stops are set by the school board. So, if I want to
kick someone off, it'll have to be back at the school if I don't want to
carry them to their own stop (which really doesn't make much sense).

All these rules, i'm sure we'd be a lot better off without a lot of
them. I still say throw them off.

Actually, it makes a lot of sense, really, and for several reasons:

First off, it keeps the school board, the bus company and you from
being sued for negligence, child endangerment, and reckless
abandonment if something bad should happen to little Susie or Tommy
being stranded on the street, like perhaps get themselves disappeared,
killed, or worse.

Second, imagine how you'd feel if you were the parent of said child.
You'd freakin' kill the driver of that bus very slowly and berate him
all the while for being a major turd for doing that to any kid, never
mind your own, now wouldn't you? And you know the Press would really
have a ball with your bad rep. in the public eye. You'd lose your job
even if the bussing company didn't go down in flames from having hired
you in the first place.

And, third, it gives little Susie's or Tommy's peers an excuse to take
out their frustrations on the little bugger that screws up their trip
home.
