Cougars don't roar. Only the "Great" cats roar. Cougars are the biggest of
the "Lesser" cats. We're the largest cats to purr. Although I'm not exactly
sure what it would take to make *me* purr.

Yes, Felis concolor, the same genus as your pet cat, Felis catus.
:-) Lions, tigers, etc. are in the genus Panthera. I have heard
recordings of cougars making some pretty scary noises, though.
They can scream like an angry house cat, only REALLY LOUDLY.

I never seem to have much luck around cats. Last time I was stroking one,
and it was purring contentedly it suddenly decided to shit on me. Not
particularly pleasant, nor romantic (I was round my then girlfriends)

Yes, I'm sure they do as well. However cougars are larger than leopards. We
are therefore still the largest cat/mammal to purr. Not the only cat to
purr, the *largest* cat to purr.

Pumas are larger than leopards? I must admit, I didn't have that
impresson at all. Hmm ...
(A quick check of Encarta later ...)
Apparently, a puma's body-length can be up to 6.4', and a leopard's
6.3', so there's not an awful lot in it, really.
But regardless, I think the problem here stems from me getting the
wrong end of the stick about your original point.
You said only great cats roar, and that pumas, which do not roar, are
the largest cats to purr. I mininterpreted that to mean that no great
cats purr, and leopards are AFAIK classed as great cats.
So: my fault. I was quite tired when I wrote that previous post.

My book doesn't differentiate between great cats and lesser cats. So I can't
confirm or deny the leopard is a great cat. But it is part of the PAnthera
genus so it must be.
