Tree's diary - days 1 to 4
Polenth
Tree selects some animal skin for the diary. He shudders at the idea of
using paper. He looks at the device that Polenth gave him. Thereoretically
it should write Tree's thoughts out. Tree is not convinced but will give it
a go. Tree wonders what date his diary started at. He does not know, so
makes up his own date...
"Tree's Diary Day One"
Sapling thinks Tree should at least put the season and year.
Tree agrees.
"Summer, 1997"
"Today Polenth placed a bird's nest in my branches. She had an argument
with Horace and in the end he sat on the egg to keep it warm. Polenth
informed me that it was my egg, and would be my bird, and that Khelban gave
it to me. I shall have to thank him if we meet. I have told Horace that I
will be cross if he doesn't keep the egg warm."
"Tree's Diary Day Two."
"The egg hatched! Polenth said we must tell Khelban if we see him. The
little bird looks very helpless. Polenth has been providing meat for it.
Horace looked up the bird in 'The Big Book Of Carnivores(tm)' and now seems
a little worried."
"Sapling has been trying to befriend Horace. Horace thinks much too
quickly in my opinion. I told Sapling, stick with sensible trees if you
want a friend but it wouldn't listen."
Sapling thinks that Tree has got too old. Besides, Tree likes dragons.
Tree points out that it is hard to be a sucessful tree in a world of
dragons if you don't like dragons. Tree goes back to the diary...
"I have named the bird 'Avis'. Polenth has informed me that the bird is a
'she'. Apparently this means she may lay eggs one day. Polenth said to
think of Holly trees. This has helped my understanding of what she meant."
"Tree's Diary Day Three"
"Today was quiet. No one came to see me, and Polenth was away in Carad.
Even Sapling was quiet. At least Polenth took Horace with her. A local bird
has come to chick-sit Avis."
"Tree's Diary Day Four"
"Polenth is concerned about something but I'm not sure what."
"Today I told Sapling how trees came into existance."
And Sapling doesn't believe a word of it!
Tree thinks that Sapling should be more respectful of his elders.
Sapling wonders if maybe black walnut trees have a different story.
Tree does not think so. As day four is not complete, Tree finishes his
diary writing session.
