Now I hate my router -- it's driving me even more insane than ever!!

Now, it works fine when I've got open wi-fi (no authentication) but when
I put a passkey on it, it fails. It doesn't reboot constantly, but it
does *&^%$#@! up with my laptop. The laptop can't access the internet
(but my ipod can with the same settings) and when I try to open a
briefcase file on my desktop to sync with my laptop, the router stops
broadcasting and the laptop loses its local connection.....

I'm ready to tear the router to pieces right now..... But as it's the
only one I've got, that's not an option right now..... I just want to
curl up into a corner and gibber until the problem is resolved.....

Everything was working fine until it just suddenly decided to start
rebooting constantly. Then I reset it (thanks, Daf) and it strangely
reset the firmware (which I have since upgraded again, twice, to no
avail), but still screwed up endlessly.

I think I'm going to end up setting up a "Buy Flame Stryke a new
router" fund, as with the cost of medications added to all my other
costs, the next time I'll be able to afford a router will be somewhere
on the far side of never..... I could go without one, except for the
Wii, ipod, and laptop which require it.....

If anyone knows how to fix a router that's being retarded, I'd love to
hear from you.....

I could pitch in a bit of money for that.
I've had a good experience so far with the Apple AirPort Extreme I got
earlier this year
(http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB763LL/A/AirPort-Extreme). It's
relatively expensive, but it works reliably, unlike some others I've tried.

Perhaps you should try leaving authentication off and using other
methods to secure your network. Methods such as turning the router off
when you know you won't need it for a while, and using MAC address
filtering (if your router supports it) to help prevent unauthorized
people from connecting.

Also set it to not broadcast the network ID. It forces anyone who wants
to connect to go "Hey! Are you out there network LFS@Home!?" Rather
than the router going, "Hey buddy! Yeah you, I'm a network. LFS@Home.
Wanna connect? I got candy."

s.r.cla...@dunelm.org.uk says...

Speaking of wired networks and networking issues...
The router we have right now my desktop has a wired connection to. When
my desktop boots from a cold start (only otherwise tested from a
Hibernate) (and this is where it gets weird) the ethernet card detects
TWO networks over the wire: LLL1 (the home network) and an unidentified
network. Due to this dual connection, and the fact that the
driver/windows/software has no idea how to handle multiple networks on a
wire I can't choose one, like I can with a wireless network, which means
that I can't connect to the internet (of course, I can connect to the
router JUST FINE THANKS). I have to disable and reenable the network
device for it to "work properly."

Restarting the router/FiOs modem hasn't solved the issue, and I'd rather
not do a full reset (it'd be a pain in the ass to set up the settings
again).

My guess is that there is some kind of interference, but the ethernet
cable /is/ shielded, and as far as I can tell doesn't run parallel to
other wires (it runs diagonally across the dining room, then along a
wall/bookcase in the Library--extra cable loop--and through a door (90
degree turn) to my desktop. There are wires in the basement running all
over the damn place, but generally, they don't follow this same path:
they either run down the floor beams or perpendicularly through them
(some of the beams seem to be relatives of swiss cheese, hehe).

Does it work with non-Apple stuff? The only thing I've got that's Apple
is my Ipod..... And Itunes doesn't work well on my PC..... About one
time in 300 when I plug in my Ipod, it'll allow me to sync stuff with
it, every other time it screws up.

The router does support MAC address filtering, but it's a pain to
constantly add new MAC addresses to the list..... And I don't think it
allowed my laptop to access it to get its MAC address last time I tried
that.....

That can work..... I'll have to test it with my Ipod (it doesn't like
networks that aren't boradcast) and see, and I've also got to try to
remember how to get the Ipod to forget the network, or it'll try
entering the key (which is currently a 256-bit key, which is really
annoying to enter on an Ipod, I might add.....)

I've used it with Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, my Nintendo Wii,
and my Ipod Touch when I had one. Its setup utility only works on Mac
and Windows, but aside from that I don't have any problems using
non-Apple stuff.

There's yer problem. D-link is generally bottom-of-the-barrel cheap-o
quality. Stick to Linksys or Netgear in the future.

Well, it wasn'tthe cheapest router out there, nor the most expensive, so
it should have been better than bottom line. And for the longest time,
it was. But it's only a couple of years old (3 at best) so it shouldn't
be nearing the end of its lifestyle.....

I use "percussive maintenance" right now, almost all the time, but only
because the fan in my PSU has permanent dust in it and it buzzes quite
loudly. A good whack generally sets the fan into a spin that avoids the
buildup.

Unfortunately my BIOS fan is starting to have the same problem, and is
MUCH harder to replace (and whack).

Well, my "Buy LFS a new router" fund has changed, I think, into a "Buy
LFS a new computer" fund..... I was getting horrible driver errors on
my desktop, until last time it died so bad that all I got was a screech
from the speakers until I turned it off. Now, it won't turn back
on..... I've tried to take it apart and put it back toether, but that
didn't work..... So, I'm down to a laptop until I can afford to buy a
new desktop, I think..... So, percussive maintenance seems to be a good
idea thus far.....

Is it still in warranty? For a long time my laptop was running an
image-based programming environment and a many-tabbed Firefox session
and Thunderbird, leading to loads of thrashing of the hard drive, which
eventually gave up, acquiring lots of bad blocks (I had sufficient
backups). I managed to get it fixed just within warranty; the shop I
purchased it from even gave me an extra copy of the receipt.

If you can get to the BIOS config screen, try booting from a liveCD or a
thumbdrive version of Linux.

If you can borrow another computer, try swapping parts around to see
what is broken. OTOH that might be a bad idea if there is a power
supply problem, because power supply problems can actually break things.

I am semi-tempted to send you a $100 or so to help.

Well, it's well and truly broken now..... I need another video card to
see if everything's all right except the video cards, or another mobo to
see if the video cards are good and the rest of it is broken..... But,
going that far anyway, would mean that I might as well go the rest of
the way and just get a brand new system..... I think it was Microsoft,
though, breaking all other versions of Windows to force people to
upgrade to 7..... But that's just speculation, based on the fact that
it screwed up after endless updates (seriously, I'd do updates that
required a reboot, then there were new updates that required a reboot
immediately after -- why?!?) and I've got no concrete proof of that;
and, in fact, my laptop, which is also Vista Ultimate, is still
working.....

The HDD is not under warranty. Everything else still is (I bought the
4-year warranty option when I got the system) but it's a homebuilt
system, not store-assembled, so I'd have to try to convince them that
all the components need to be replaced.....

I can get a blank screen, does that count....? The HDD light comes on
and stays on when nothing except the main HDD and 1 video card are
connected (or just 1 video card -- either video card -- and no HDD), and
the front panel buttons elicit no response (I even downloaded the MoBo
manual to ensure they were correctly connected, even though it was
working fine before, but you never know.....)

No other computer, I am the guy who's got another computer (laptop), all
my other components were recycled when I got this one, as they were worn
out....

I would love that, but unless I get enough of a response to get me
enough to get a new computer (unlikely, given the current economy) I'd
just have to send it back..... This one cost me about $1300 when I got
it, and a buddy's cost $1700, so things aren't in any way cheap around
here.....
