'Good for you, comrade. We all make it here eventually. It's like one of
those philosophical thingies. I guess I should tell you the one rule we have
here..... don't stand between a drac and his/her food!' <laugh> 'Enjoy
yourself here in the Dominance.'
With this, the magenta dragon who presented himself to you gestures and creates
a plate of brownies covered in a half-gallon of ice cream. 'Anything else you
need? High-yeild hoard investments? Computers destroyed? Softening up the
minds of your prey? Don't hesitate to ask.'
Marada seems to step back a bit and almost disappear in the darkness he loves
so.

Hi, Moon Starr! Um...you probably don't remember *me*, but I'm the "New
and Improved!" version of R*a*s*h*a. Please don't say that name without
putting in stars or something--otherwise, it shows up in searches on Deja
News and stuff, and I had a very unpleasant experience with a spammer
forging my address a while ago, so I'm being kind of paranoid about it
right now.

Um...and I promised I'd post up an explanation of what's been going on in
my life a while ago, but I never did, so when I do you'll be among the
first to know!

Donno if anyone's mentioned these or not yet, but the Warner Brothers
store is selling beanbag plushes of the two-headed dragon from "Quest
for Camelot"! It's really very cute, and actually looks like the
character :)
They're a pretty good deal at $7 (they're a lot larger than all the
other characters being sold for the same price!)

They had some other merchandise (of course) but the only other thing
that I really liked was a ceramic cookie jar -- the two heads were
fighting over a big cookie (sounds like some dragons here, neh? ;)

Of course they do! *says a voice*

*steps out of the shadows, grinning wildly*

No, as for stealthiness, true, I am the master... It's more of a...
gift, really, than something.. teachable. Even if it were, trade secrets
and all.... :)

Still, I am not one for lurking... more like... well, kitsune calls it
spying. :)

If you want the master of lurking, you have to talk to Bry. Been on the
NG 3 years [on and off] and NO posts. The prob is, first you have to get
his attention, then you have to draw him out of the woodwork... we
almost had him when sparhawk and some other gryphonguild members were
all delurking, but alas... he's stubborn. Not as much as me, but... :)

Maaaayhaps if I mention his silly name over and over again... or...
better yet... *ahem* gryphons can only having lion tails! Conspiracy!
Conspiracy!

*looks right*
*looks left*
*looks up*
*lifts her paws and looks under them*

Like I said, dat's da hard part. :)

I somehow doubt a bush will be sufficient protection, moon. In fact,

"It might not explode...as such...although I don't know quite what it will
do...erg!" Jia looks around, as the stick vibrates even more, giving off
sparkliesparks. She spots a coffee can lying on the ground and quickly
dumps a couple of clawfulls of dirt into it, then sticks the sparkling end
of the stick into the can and backs away. The coffee can trembles
violently, and little flecks of dirt fling out with sparkliestuff attached
to them.

"Okay--now I can run for the hills," Jia says, and without further ado,
does so.

Actually, my RL hatstand rarely has hats on it -- it's more where my

going to have to break out my fedora so I can stick my press-pass in

Do sparklies actually respond to suggestions? Image and rae are the

Hrm. He said that after he caught us talking about him he typed up this
huge, long entrance post, then decided it's too silly and didn't post
it. Gotta wonder if he's fibbing about being here so long... :)

something. :)

Of course, I'm a Proxian when doing this, so naturally humans wouldn't
have anything too similar... :)

Nonono, I remember him doing that... but what'd they do to his show? It
just sorta dissappeared... I like the DeflaterMus (I haven't the
slightest idea how that's spelled, except not how I'm spelling it)

Ohh, of course. That's my biggest problem with kids now a day... they
shake your hand, agree to stay out of it, then whip around and try to
stab you in the back. Now, granted, I've done similar things, but they
were all to _really_ annoying people. :)

Yeah, but now he's resigned himself to lurking and posting to the gryph

Well, in Bry's last essay he was talking about men on horseback trying
to steal gryphon's golden aeries, hence the gryphon's less than
complimentary view of both. Of course, they've learned they can't be
anti-human without sending me off on rants (perhaps you've noticed them?

Well, I thought I'd put that disclaimer in 'cause I couldn't remember the
actual people involved, and "Fred" and "Mike" are very abnormal names for
my friends. Most of them have much more interesting names, or at least I

Well, Rai, you DID say that it makes a lot of sense! Maybe "unusual" or
"non-traditional".

I TOLD y'all that gryphons don't fib!

Not just yet. But I do spend a lot more time in newsgroups now. As for you BP
*glares predatorially* I still think it's you that activated that "anti-lurker
field generator". Where did AFD get something like that? Can we borrow it for
use at The GryphBoard?

>> Erm, why _don't_ gryphons like horses? Is this an anti-hippogryph
>> thing?

You asked for it! *evil grin*

Traditional gryphon mythology had the gryphon homeland adjacent to Scythia
(modern-day southern Ukraine), the land of the Arismaspians, who were one-eyed
steepe dwellers. Just like the Mongols, the Arisamspians were said to
practically live on horseback, and constantly infringed on the gryphon's
territory, looking to steal the gryphon's gold and sometimes even hatchlings.
So these gryphs no doubt learned to become quite enraged whenever they saw or
heard signs of horses. They also probably learned that, one the battle was
won, horses could be quite tasty!

Now, I know I've seen some equine-types around here occasionally, but I feel
that unless they carry eyrie-theives, I have no problem with them.

As for hippogryphs, again, I don't see why sentient beings couldn't get along.
The idea of a hippogryph in the first place was the existance of an
impossibility. They are still chimeric, very-similar-to-gryphs creatures.
Because of all the variations possible in gryphons in the first place, I don't
see why a hippogryph would be much different. They have the "mind" of a
gryphon, after all.

We've never had a hippogryph at The Guild, even though I think they would be
welcome. We've had a few unicorns about, and even though many members have had
to contain their resentment, most gryphs are willing to let bygones be bygones.
If anyone here has ever read Mercedes Lackey, they know that two of the
non-human inhabitants of her worlds, the Companions and the gryphons, get along
VERY well!

(So now everyone is familiar with *my* style of ranting. If this is too
off-topic or annoying, someone tell me to shut my beak *gg*)

Jia looks over and blows into Rai's skullcase...a little dust and a few
lint bunnies fly out. "Hmmm, what's this?" Reaching in, Jia brings out a
small black box marked "DANGER--HIGH INTELLIGENCE! CONTENTS UNDER
PRESSURE!!" The box has a couple of wires dangling from the back that
look like they should plug into something...

A slow machine still shouldn't mark all your messages read, though --
I'd imagine it _was_ the ISP that caused that. I'm surprised
there'senough of a price difference to make it worth going to an ISP
purely on price grounds, though. Almost all ISPs here vary between
eight and twelve pounds a month.

Oh yeah... *sniffles* with 75 megahertz. People laugh at me when I tell
them that.... at least it's going somewhat faster now, for some reason

No, they extend from the wrist of the bot. You pull them out as a sorta
metal splinter, pull your wrist back, snap [so they retract], and throw.

If they were already retracted in the bot, they'd probly be harder to
store and they might poison the keeper as well [they're poisonous :)]

Left on its own in the clearing, the plaidsparkliestick vibrates for a few
more moments, then gives of a couple of half-hearted plaidsparkliesparks
and then, with a tiny whine, stops.

Time passes...

More time passes...

A little bird flies up, lands on the exposed end of the plaidsparkliestick
and chirps a couple of times. A moment later, it flies off again.

Still more time passes...

Large footsteps are heard approaching...

A shadow darkens the glade as a sixty-foot-tall sparkliegreen Lemura
wanders by. It sniffs, apparantly scenting the nearness of more
sparkliewierdness, reaches down and, like a gorilla fixing a Swiss watch,
pulls the plaidsparkliestick out of the ground. It examines the stick,
then, with a massive "**FRINK!!**", pops the stick into its mouth and
swallows once.

Lemura's green sparkly fur begins growing blue and yellow stripes...which
Lemura seems completely oblivious of, as it wanders away again.

"Well," Jia says, having watched the scene with a pair of pocket
binoculars. "I suppose that's for the best...or something...yeek."

Hmm. I'd think gryphons a little too intelligent to fall for the
Pavlov's Dog 'one stimulus always leads to another stimulus' thing --
surely there were wild horses on the plains who didn't carry marauding
men on their backs?

The second reason sounds much more convincing. :=8)

*G* Precisely.

*nodnod* Undoubtedly.

Another misconception blown away. I'd always believed hippogryphs
tended to be of rather lower intelligence than most gryphons.

I don't doubt it for a second.

Hmm -- do gryphs really regard unicorns as no more than horses? I'd
consider them as somewhat different, personally. They're not usually
carrying riders, to begin with!

Haven't had the pleasure of reading. Any recommendations for the
first piece to read?

Off topic? _Here_?! *laugh* I think you're probably safe, Bry!

Not at all -- it's very interesting to learn a bit about a race I'm
not overly familiar with!

They're nests are lined with gold and they are considered guardians of
wealth from man's greed.

I think I'd still feel safer far away from whatever it does, though!

Gracious, that's rather a challenging job, isn't it?

On your recommendation, I found a copy in the library this week. I
shall read it at the first opportunity. :=8)

Well, the gryphons pictured in this activity always seem to be about
Alex's size.... the size of a small house. [or a large house, they're
usually pictured with a race of cyclops, which very well may be much
larger than humans...]

Okay, that'd make it a _little_ easier, but humans are a frighteningly
avaricious bunch -- surely it'd take a _lot_ of gryphs to guard
against their greed? Especially if the cyclops are greedy too!

I will, I will! I just need things to settle down at work a little --
having a desk would be nice, for example ...

Well, actually, it's principally the cyclops that are trying to get the
gold, since men didn't live in that part of the world, and those who
came got greedy and never returned to tell anyone about the wealth
there. Except for sinbad, of course. :)
