Whew! It took me long enough to find this group after loosing track of
it due to spam attacks and a Windows crash. So how many are still here
from the old days?

Well, I'm new here! But it's good to welcome back old members.

Do find a spam-filter and a stable OS. Windows 7 should be up soon :-)

I am also new here, but again, it's good to meet those who've been around
for a long time.

...Drak'rrth, you do know that Windows 7 is a tweaked Vista, right?
Vista was Windows NT 6, issuing VER in 7 gives "Windows NT 6.1". And
personally, I think keeping Windows stable takes just too much effort.
*nix seems to take less. But anyway.

By the way, that will hopefully be my only opinionated technology speech
for quite some time. If I go off on one, please bite me or do something
equivalently drastic. I need the conditioning.

It's not just "tweaked" Vista. It's everything Vista *should* have
been, and then some. It's awesome. I'm running Win7 RC (build 7100) on
my desktop and RTM/OEM on my laptop, with no problems.

Welcome back.

Frankly, I don't mind Vista that much, but most of my stuff DOES work
properly here. And it's easier to keep multiple accounts with Vista
than XP. (I use two accounts, one admin and one user, and I use the
user account so that if my computer gets infected, I can do damage-
control.) Of course, Vista does take up more memory and stuff, so I'm
looking forward to Windows 7 (because that's where my "investment"
gets more bang for buck).

Greylight, how long has it been since you were here? Just curious.

Thanks for the welcome back and welcome to alt.fan.dragons! Ignore my
Juno e-mail address, I no longer have that one *goes to update his
profile before popping back in again*.

I use WindowsXP on a network with a built in firewall and two
additional firewalls plus internet security software and anti-spam
software just incase. I learned to do that after someone hacked my
account on a website to get my RL address.

Hey!! I'm here!! Not after a crash, but after a calculated surgical
strike. My computer started to send spam through my Messenger account,
so I deleted the partition and reinstalled from scratch. And, luckily,
I was able to save a lot of stuff, and have downloaded install files for
other things, so yeah, this should be quite quick to get back to where I
was.....

I use Windows 7 (the RC) right now, and I like it much better than
Vista. It may just be a tweaked version, but it feels nicer. I was
able to turn off UAC within seconds of entering Windows for the first
time and it hasn't bugged me since (unlike the hack needed to perform
the same action on Vista, and it's constant reminder that "You've turned
off UAC").

It also has better support for 32 bit aplications (I run a 64 bit
machine) than XP does, and considering that I can get it for free, it
one-ups Vista (as some of the work I do from home right now uses a piece
of software that /will not run/ on Windows XP 64bit).

Builds 7000-7077 were Beta. 7100 through 72-something were Release
Candidate. These were available for free, ostensibly for testing purposes.

RTM is "Release to Manufacturing", or final release build. Not sure the
actual build number on it. OEM is "Original Equipment Manufacturer",
which refers to the copies they send to Dell, HP, etc. that have their
activation keys built in.

I know that much.

What I had meant was, I haven't heard of, or seen anyone with, a RC
version of Windows 7 that /isn't/ build 7100.

7100 was the official public-release build. A few other builds got
leaked, but since there was a readily-available official release and not
a whole lot of changes between them, relatively few people bothered with
the leaked ones.

They changed from Workgroups to Homegroups. You set up a homegroup on 1
computer, then use the key generated to set up all the other computers
on the same homegroup. However, no matter how many times I tried
deleting and resetting the homegroup, the 2 computers could only find
themselves in the group. With Vista, when my *&^%$#@@! router works,
they talk to each other and share files.....

BTW, does anyone know of a way to get a DLink router to stop randomly
rebooting for no reason....?

They didn't *replace* the regular networking. They *added* Homegroups
on top of it, to make it easier (in theory) to share files on your home
network. Workgroups are still there, and standard file-sharing is still
there. Set it up just like you did before, it should work.

Ugh, D-link. I strongly recommend dumping it in the garbage where it
belongs and getting a Netgear or Linksys.

LFS, you still need to configure the workgroups in the vista/win7
machines the same as you would on the older ones, you also need to grant
permissions. In Vista/Win7 you do this by clicking start, right click on
'computer' and click properties. Then on the page it opens if you scroll
down there's details on computer name, and workgroup, click the change
settings button to the right of it and make sure all the computers are
on the same workgroup and reboot all of them. If you still have issues,
on XP Pro and Vista, go into folder options and under advanced there's a
checkbox for 'use simple file sharing' this sometimes solves issues, but
you lose the advanced features, however said 'advanced features' are
typically useless things no one wants. Even in simple sharing you still
can set either 'everyone' or specific user login permissions for file
and folder access. If you do however set anything other than 'everyone'
do note you need to make users on the computer of the name name and
password as those on the other computers that you want to give special
access to.

As for your D-link, I had this problem myself. What model is it? There's
two things that I know of (and I bet there's more) that cause routers to
boot loop. Firstly, if you have any servers running, particularly things
like a FTP server running on port 21, somebody(s) on the internet might
be hammering your router trying to bruteforce in. There's countless bots
on the internet that try to bruteforce FTP servers to see what they can
get. Because of this I had to move my FTP server to an internal port
where only SSH tunnel access granted access to the FTP server. Besides
people on the internet hammering you, it is possible the router suffered
ESD shock. Solving this one is a pain and there's a high chance it's
dead permanently. But if nothing got fried from the ESD shock, simply
unplug your router from the wall and give it an hour to just sit there
without power so that the capacitors all bleed out until the unit is
completely dead, then get a paper clip and press down the reset button
and plug it in with the reset button held down for 5 seconds. This will
make the router revert back to factory made settings. It's possible that
your router settings might have gotten scrambled from a big list of
possibilities. I've to date had my router setting scrambled 8 times over
the years I had two routers due to things like power outages, surges,
and crappy Internet Explorer screwing up form transmits when I was
configuring the router.

There's lots of other possiblities, but give these a shot, best of luck..

I didn't see that option, but then, I didn't look too closely.....

D-link's been good to me thus far, just now it's acting up..... And I
can't afford a new router right now (in fact, I can't even afford to eat
until Friday, due to enforced time off laying in a hospital bed.....) so
even if I did want a new one, I'm sort of hooped.....

On Vista, it works out of the box, as the saying goes. In 7, it didn't
work at all..... But if it does work, I'll consider upgrading, since I
did like everything else about 7.

No servers, and my router is behind another firewall (internet phone
adapter) so internet signals shouldn't even be able to see the router.
All ports on both the router and the phone adapter are in stealth.
Cable modem, phone adapter and router are all on UPS, so no surges or
power outages. Router is set up with a password (WPA/WPA2, I suppose I
could set it to just WPA2) so nobody else cqan gain access, and there
are no erronious connections. Remote management is disabled, so only
those wired to the router can acces it (I suppose WiFi can, too, but
every time it rebooted, they'd get booted off)..... Name is being
broadcast, though, as I like my laptop to be able to connect without me
having to tell it it can.....

I tried that, and after resetting both the router and my laptop (the
password type was apparently different) it seems to be stable again.
Thanks for the info.

So the ESD drain + hard reset fixed the router problem? If so great. As
for networking windows, if you'd like LFS, next time I'm not busy, if I
see you online I'll do a live video feed of my desktop for you to see
how I configure windows 7 to work with all the other computers. My house
there's 2 Win7, Vista, XP Pro, and Ubuntu computer all interconnected.
So if I can do it, you should be able to as well.

Yup, that seems to have done the trick. It hasn't reset in about 24
hours, which is about 23.75 hours longer than it used to };=8

Thanks, but that's not helpful right now unless I upgrade to Win7, which
I won't do until I upgrade my computer again at the earliest (I'm always
looking for the biggest and the best, so I keep buying a new one.....)

I find your discussion of computers very different from what I
experience at home: you have OSes and separate computers with their own
filesystems and individual applications. That rigid hierarchical
packaging means you have made interface synchronisation simple so
systems can be assembled with only manual version management.

I am, thus the statement that I won't upgrade to Win7 until I upgrade my
computer. I didn't set a time limit, and since the one I have now has
about 3 years remaining on the replacement warranty, it prolly won't be
until then.

Kigdatsi split software up into smaller and different bits than you do,
which allows combinations of functionality that yours cannot provide,
but we need help from the computer to get a combination that works
together. For example, you can buy Windows and Office, but we must
assemble thousands of components, then modify things until they all work
together.

> People (especially corporations) love PROPRIETARY: DO NOT COPY stuff.

That makes your civilisation less efficient than ours but much more
resistant to internal selfishness.

The lifespan was chosen.

Genetic development causes us to become obsolete, so we muct be replaced
anyway. Operation at 320K (116 degF) allows us to learn and work much
faster than humans can, but causes degrading faster than humans.
Structure and memory loss due to repairs mean that maintenance beyond 30
years is not worthy.

Heard an interview with a book author on the radio recently, a book
titled "So Much For All That" about the rising costs of health care in
the US. One of the comments on the book is that the main character has
conversations about topics most people don't want to talk about: how
it's not worth 2 million dollars to be saved from cancer.

But one of the comments that was written (phoned, actually) was from a
nurse who said something along the lines of, "We hear these kinds of
comments from sick people all the time, 'I'm not worth the cost, just
let me die,' and a psychiatric doctor is called in because these people
are suffering from depression; we think there's something /wrong/ with
them when they say that it's not worth the cost."

And it reminded me of our conversation here; this particular thread and
the other about not repairing yourselves past a useful expectancy and
how you had thought it odd of me to agree with your point. It seems I'm
not too far off after all: people are willing to die instead of paying
the cost, but they aren't will to let /others/ die.

The problem is most directly related to the cost of healthcare in the
United States. Really how can someone justify spending 10x more than
they will make in 5 years on a "possible cure" or worse spending
hundreds of dollars on a diagnostic test ?

Yes insurance helps but not much. Case in point I went to have
outpatient surgery performed. My insurance paid $75 of a nearly $500
bill. Stating that I had not yet my surgical deductable.

I belive we need a National Healthcare Plan. We needed it 10 years
ago. At the rate we are going any illness would be catastophic
financially.

In 1984 I was severly injured, thankfully on the job. I was in the
hospital for nearly 4 months, the first time. I had 11 surgeries and
eventually spen over 18 months in and out of hospital and physical
therapy. Total cost to me almost 10K total bill nearly 2 million.
Thankfully workmens comp paid out including my costs eventually.

I can not imagine having to shoulder the whole thing even if I would
have survived it again, just on the financial side. So I can see where
someone could say let me die its just not worth it.

It's a shame really that people have to pay mind bogglingly amounts of
money for their health. Sadly, I've experienced it first hand with a
skin condition. The treatment worked, but when I saw the bill, I was
pretty shocked... I assumed I was properly insured, but those insurance
[censored] know their way around paper. Hrrmph. If you ask me, health
care should be non-profit. It's a shame that people must make money of
other people's suffering.

But there is a reason it's currently the way it is, and I guess it works
for most people.

*shrugs* We don't live in an ideal world, how boring that would be.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to die. It's wanting to live in a
world like this that's wrong.

I wouldn't call it wrong, exactly. I agree with your viewpoint, but
there are a lot of others who would not (mostly humans, of course).
It's a tough life for us here. Damn society.

No, damn humans and their "holier than thou" attitudes. And, of course,
the "I fear anything I don't understand and I destroy what I fear"
mentality.
