The Viz ones? The're actually really good. The translation is almost
perfectly accurate, the names of characters and attacks are more like the
original (though they do change a few of them, but with accurate name
translations), characters' behaviors aren't changed, there's no censoring
(mild profanity, actual death (no "other dimension"!)), and so on.
I, for one, recommend them.
-Jim Stanfield
Look closely at them. The ones at my Rite-Aid are sold in a pack, and ARE
edited. They started doing that after the big Toys-R-Us fiasco.

I don't know......
I picked up Part 3 #4 at my local comics shop. It seemed to have touch ups
here and there (Kuririn's "Kamesen Kulilin" hat was changed to match his name
in the English comic. It also seems that the first of the comic's two episodes
was either originally printed in full color or taken as screen captures from
the anime. The second, however, is clearly all Toriyama.
However, I DID see the full set of parts 1 and 2, complete with moderate
profanity. The one I picked up, by comparison, seems really benign (other than
Kiwi/Kui saying he will kill Vegeta....we all know how that ends up). On the
upside, it was the one where you first see Freeza (comic)/Frieza (dub).
Other than that, I would recommend it.

That really sucks. All just because one lady had a problem with it.
It's bullshit.
Klar
Oh, and you may be right about the pages that looked as though they were
intended to be printed in color. I don't believe they're screen
captures; I know I heard somewhere that Mr. Toriyama would do a few
pages in color once in a while, or something ... anyway, there were
several such pages in the first issue of Part 1, and again in the sixth,
so it's not a new occurence.

The Viz translation of the manga? It's pretty good, as far as I'm concerned.

Really? One person screwed it up for a lot of people? What happened?
BTW-I Re-checked at my local Rite Aid, and in small letters in the upper-left
hand corner, it says "Fully Edited." Are they proud of the fact that they
bastardize one of the best series ever? I think so.
Yes, please--I haven't heard the gooshy details, although I am aware
there was some sort of backlash. If anyone knows the skinny, might we
hear it?

I find this just another stinkin' pellet of irony on top of the whole
mile-high shitload. ^_^ A year ago they were touting their "uncut and
unbelievable" manga, but it seems they've done a 360 from there. Oh
dear.

I'll try to fill you in best as I can. I heard this awhile back. I think it was
also on Vegitto EX's page back then too...Anyway, I think some lady had a problem
with the Dragonball comics, because it showed Goku taking off Bulma's panties. She
had a fit about her kid reading that, so she made a big deal about it. Apparently,
Toys R Us decided to take the comics off their shelves. I tried recalling the
details, but what is written above may be wrong. If any of you remember more
clearly, please fill in.

Well, in the one issue I have, we have Chichi telling her father to
cut the crap, the full tilt of pissed-off Bulma, Kami-sama's name
being just that - Kami-sama, - Baba Uranai's name being just that,
Kaiosama's not only getting proper treatment but also a natty little
line-over-the-o, and Gyuu Mao's name was also kept Gyuu Mao. Piccolo
even tells Gohan he's trying to kill him.
I'd say that by that issue - 8 - they're being a bit better behaved,
ne?

They really do seem to be very well done. I mean, it's nothing new if you've
seen the anime, but I think it's cool to see the "official" story the way
Toriyama intended it.
However, "Dragonball" has started editing. And not just in toy stores, but
in the same comic book store I've bought every other issue. So far they just
seem to be blocking out Gokuu-penis, but how long will THAT stay the same?
SEAN
Please. Call it "Mr. Tinkle Spout".
... Or not. o_O
> but how long will THAT stay the same?
I shudder to imagine. I'd estimate we have one or two more precious
issues before Viz _really_ settles into "FUNi mode". Can you picture
Viz editors ditching pages of material, editing dialogue past the point
of salvation by mortal man, drawing rocks and plants in front of every
bare extremity? I can, and it's not a pretty picture. Then again, they
might surprise us poor doomsayers yet, although somehow I doubt it.
You know, I just recalled that the Dragon Ball manga got a new editor
not terribly long ago. Trish Ledoux, the original editor, had to depart
for some reason or other; do you suppose it's the new fellow who's at
fault for the recent edits?
Penny for your thoughts.
> Penny for your thoughts.
Well, you asked for it... Has anyone (politely) emailed Viz to see what's
up with the new editing? I mean, obviously they didn't have a problem
with "Mr. Tinkle Spout" before.
Yes yes, I know, it's very quick, easy, and probably accurate to blame the
censoring on parental complaints, but really, has anyone (politely) tried
to get an answer from Viz?
I would do so myself, but frankly, I do not buy the individual comics very
often, and am waiting for the upcoming graphic novels. So obviously, I
have an interest, and I would email Viz myself, but it sounds a bit weak
to say, "yeah, I hear you're censoring the manga now, what's up with that?
um, no, I don't know exactly where... no... no... okay bye." ^^;;
My point: I hear a lot of people complaining about the manga censoring
lately (not that there's anything wrong with complaining), but has anyone
(politely) challenged Viz on it? I'd be interested on the official word
on the subject.
-Monaco
I have politely e-mailed Viz regarding the editing of the recent Dragonball
comic. I have yet to receive a response. If I do, I will let you know what
they had to say.
Does anyone have a mailing address for Viz? I would gladly send them a
letter if I had it.

The story earned her ten minutes in the uncooperative chair.
I sent a letter to their letters page. It was rather angry and
threatened to not buy another issue if they didn't respond. They haven't
responded so I guess they don't care. It doesn't matter though, I've
already read the rest of it.

Today I called Viz and asked them whom would be the appropriate person to
send a letter regarding the censorship of Goku's nudity in Dragonball part 2
number 15.
They told me:
Oliver Chin
Director of Sales and Marketing
Viz Communications, Inc.
655 Bryant St.
San Francisco, CA 94107
So, I am in the process of writing my letter. I never got any response to my
e-mails. If you feel the desire to write a letter of your own and you want
to be taken seriously, please do the following:
- Use a business letter format.
- Limit your letter to one page. Trust me, no one will read past the first
page anyway.
- Be professional and polite!! And I mean painfully polite.
- Check for spelling and grammar mistakes.
Well, I am done with my completely unsolicted advice and off to write my own
letter.
