About finding VCD players, I don't know where to look in the US. But I'm
sure they do exists. Since they are very common in Asia, they might be
available in some Asian video store. That's how I got mine.
I had no idea that DVD players could play VCD:s as well. If I'd know that
before, I would have bought a DVD player instead. Mine VCD player can
play VCD, Music CDs, and karaoke discs.
PS:You can order VCD players on the net pretty easy. Question is if it
is very reliable?

I just went through this story last week. The advice I would give is take
a VCD with you when you go to buy, if getting a DVD player. I tried every
DVD player Circuit City had, and the only one that recognized the VCD
format was the lowest of the low-end RCA models, which sold for $299. My
in-laws are on an extended visit from China, and brought with them dozens
of VCDs. According to them, ever since DVDs became the standard over
there, VCDs are next to worthless, and you can get them for under a buck
apiece. Yesterday, I went to see about renting VCDs from a Chinese
grocery across town, and got them to let me see the first five minutes of
the GT special. Unfortunately for me, it was in Cantonese, which I don't
speak, but I did recognize all the sounds except for the dialogue from the
original Japanese. (An aside, this is the way FUNimation should be
handling things, IMHO.) Anyhow, I'm going to be writing my sister-in-law
(who is still in China) to see if she can get me Chinese
subs/dubs-with-left-track-Japanese-right-track-Mandarin VCDs of the
series. Maybe ask for some Slump while I'm at it. ^o^ I realzie it's not a
solution for everyone, but it will work for me.

Do all DVD players play VCDs, or just universal ones?

P.S.: Sorry, if I insulted anyone with the first few words. It is late.

According to the box I saw of Creative Labs' DVD kit, they have the option of
playing VCDs. I guess that would be true since you can play VCDs with a regular CD
drive and a MPEG software player. Have anyone tried inserting a VCD into your CD-ROM
drive? Well, because when you do that, you can actually read what is on the CD as
files and folders just like any Data CD. The movie file is a *.dat file, which is
MPEG compressed. It is the largest file on the disc, you can't miss it. VCDs run on
computers, you don't really need a VCD player unless you don't have a computer with
a good video card, sound card, and a decent processor. The dat file, may be read by
Microsoft's MPEG library file, but I haven't tried turning off my Video Card's MPEG
software to see if Microshaft's version will work.
Also, they have MPEG adapter cards for those purposes, saves your CPU from having to
decode the stuff and let your MPEG card do it. There are software out there that
played MPEG movies, they SHOULD work for VCDs too. I make no gurrentees. But I tried
it on a regular CD drive with a movie software and it worked like a beuity.
I hope this helped you all.

Very tempting, but I think I'll hold out for the Japanese/Mandarin
hybrids.
