I've heard two parts - seems good - although it's taken existing
scenes from earlier books.
Minor spoiler:
Earth being destroyed (again).
Heart of Gold rescue (again).
The insulting alien, Wowbagger The Infinitely Prolonged, appears
(again).
Hopefully the rest of 'And Another Thing' will explore new storyline
territory rather than feeling like a 'Greatest Hits' type hitchhiker's
book.

To be fair, it's not merely a 'Greatest Hits' storyline. It's also re-
using some 'Worst Hits' such as Zaphod having one of his heads
amputated, from the movie.

It won't start to play (useless thing) but click 'use lower bandwith
version'.
The page will change to the new version. It still won't start to play
(just as useless as the other version), however, move your cursor over
to the realplayer icon on the right which is above the help icon.
Click the realplayer icon - a small box should appear, click 'play in
realplayer'. Realplayer will start to play the lower bandwith version.
It's pretty good sound quality. Almost the same quality as the normal
version.
This current fault is not helping to attract new listeners. Seems a
great way to ruin the show. Perhaps someone at the BBC will fix the
problem and people can hear the normal version via the iplayer and
Radio 4 pages.

I bloody love books, me, but I'm also officially the world's laziest
sod. About 15 years ago when my grandfather lost his sight, I used to go
the library to get him audio books - BINGO! I found my way in life. Now
I'll gladly let someone read me to sleep on a CD rather than do it
myself. I've spent a fortune on audio books (they cost a
lot...especially the big ones like Lord of the Rings and Dune). I was
over the moon to learn of this radio 4 reading. It's very good, too,
with a few sound effects and a separate 'voice of the book'.
Yes, it is rather counter-productive to selling books. Good on them
though. No chance of me missing a segment - I programmed my PVR for all
ten parts and will burn them to disc for posterity.

dunno if it was the narrator trying to put on a silly female voice - a
dead prostitute - or the stuff with Zaphod going to meet Thor but,
whatever it was, I didn't like it much. I never did like the idea of
Thor in Hitchhiker's. Seems a bit too retro for a sci-fi saga.
The original HH book and first radio series will always be the
definitive HHs.

Just to add - I dunno if this is stating the blooming obvious but
surely it would work better if the production hired a woman to do the
female characters. Hearing the narrator doing silly female voices
reminds me of some naff pantomime where the men play the women!

reading it. It's some English bloke. Very good he is too.
As for the book itself, it's more gag heavy than what we're used to but
all definitely in the style and vein of Mr Adams. Certainly a worthwhile
HHGTTG book. I'll say no more as I know folks haven't read it yet.

Thanks a bundle. And about counter-productiveness: It's abridged, isn't
it? People who care *will* want to buy the book. I certainly will, but
almost 15€ is a bit too steep for me; I'll wait for the paperback to
come out as usual.

It does. I'm recording it on a Freeview hard drive recorder that carries
the BBC radio stations, so I'll have to burn the recordings to DVDR. A
blank screen (well, with a few news updates and what-have-you) will
result, but obviously it is the audio I'm interested in. My TV can also
switch the display off, for when you're playing CD's and stuff via DVD
player...so I can do that for playback. I had no other way at hand to
record radio...I'm not a big radio person.

I have and would be willing to send you a a DVD-R of all ten parts (when
I have them all down) if the postage isn't too costly. Where do you live?

First though, try the BBC 'Listen Again' service...although it may not
let you use it if you're from a non-UK address. Well that is what
happens every time I try to watch an episode of Lost on the ABC
site..."only for North American residents" etc. Worth a try though.

Actually someone else has already come forth and uploaded them to the
internet, but thanks for the offer anyway. I'm only about a thousand or
so kilometres from London, BTW, but of course that's enough not to get
reception. Ah, the old days when radio still meant long wave...

Yeah, the iplayer stuff is limited to British IPs, and the only way I
have to get one of them is TOR. That is randomly trying until I get an
exit node in the UK. Of course the speed is abysmal, so I don't even
try that.
