I've just been glancing through the forum for the first time for a few
weeks.
Oh boy.
First of all, no, that is not part of my screenplay for the movie. Not even
remotely. Though, as a matter of fact, I do recognise it. The guy who posted
it to the group originally emailed it to me on June 8th saying he had
written it and asking what I thought of it.

Second. Jim Carrey is not going to play Arthur Dent. Here's a clue as to why
not. Arthur Dent is English.

All casting at the moment is highly speculative. Nobody has been cast.
Nobody has been signed. The problem is that every time I say idly, in an
off-the-cuff conversation, that maybe so-and-so might be an interesting
possibility in such-and-such a part, a few days later I read on the net that
the actor has definitely been signed, what his deal is and so on. (Though
usually the actual part is misreported). Don't believe anything you read on
the net. Except this. Well, including this, I suppose.

Here's where we are at.

On Christmas Eve I agreed the deal with Disney to sell them the film rights,
to write the screenplay, and to be executive producer. Robbie Stamp, my
partner from The Digital Village, is also executive director.

I have only just actually signed the deal. Everything in between has been
lawyer stuff. Really.

The producer is Roger Birnbaum, of Caravan Pictures (now Spyglass Pictures).
There is no decision about which of Disney's various imprints (Touchstone,
Hollywood, etc) it will go out under.
The director will be Jay Roach, who directed Austin Powers, and is just
finishing a new movie called Mystery, Alaska.

Now that the contract is signed, I am about to deliver a first draft of the
new screenplay. Other than me, nobody has seen it. No copy of it exists
outside my study.

Jay is about to go into production of Austin Powers II.

I will do rewrites to the screenplay after Jay, Roger and Disney have
reacted to it.
Once everyone is happy that it's right, casting will start. If all goes
according to current intentions we should be filming next summer for release
in the following summer.

That's it.

Anything else is hearsay and Chinese whispers. Especially the stuff from
unnamed 'reliable sources'.

I'd like to try a little experiment, and here it is.

I hereby categorically deny that the part of Arthur Dent is going to be
played by Oprah Winfrey.

Now. Let's see...

Well, doesn't that just take the biscuit!

Let's be thankful for small mercies. But one quick question, if
you want an English actor to play Arthur, who you gonna get
in Hollywood? They'll probably insist on big name actors,
and there aren't that many big name actors in Hollywood
that are Arthur's age and English.

And I look forward to that. I loved the first Austin Powers, so
I would like to see a sequel. And on a personal note, seeing how
good AP was, I think Jay will do a,"Very shagadelic job, baby, yeah!"

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

Okay. I think it's a little tedious, Mr. A, that you have to
explain this twice just because people won't let the rumors die
down. But I think a more important matter is, with your
all-too-notorious ability to miss deadlines more than once,
are you absolutely positive you can turn the screenplay in
on time? I've been waiting for a Hitchhiker's movie
since I was thirtteen years old (five years ago),
and I want it to turn out well. I know it's
corny, but I love the series, and I respect your
work, and I don't wanna see a movie fail. I want it to
be as good as it can be. And I think you'll agree with the
majority of us on this NG who think that if you did cast Jim
Carrey (I'm not saying he has been cast) would pretty much drag
the whole picture down.

Hey, go easy on him Chris. Did you read what he said right here? He is *about
to deliver* a first draft of the new screenplay. That seems to be pretty much
on schedule to me. September of 98, with a now-signed contract and a nearly
complete first draft screenplay, that should be plenty of time for any
rewrites, production next year and release in summer 2000.

Well, damn. I thought it was pretty good anyway. Maybe the guy needs a
job as a screenplay writer.

Thank God!

Thanks, Mr. Adams for posting here personally. I'm glad you keep in
touch with your fans. Maybe, to dispel even more rumors, you could let
us have a peek at your rough draft? Maybe some of it? A paragraph or
two? Please!

=)

One more rumor.

Can you confirm or deny the rumor that George Burns is seriously being
considered for the role of Slartibartfast? Yes, I know Mr. Burns is
staying dead a couple of years for tax purposes, but he'll need work
when he comes back.

Just a thought.

Hey, Greg, I didn't mean that in an offensive
way. Douglas Adams is the last person I'd
ever want to offend, and I've told him so a time
or two through e-mail before. I'm just
concerned because, as I said in my e-mail,
I've been looking forward to the movie

Hello all,
Finally someone set the record straight. Its a shame that it had to be
Douglas Adams cause now everyone who posted all those messages looks really
stupid. Actually, its the newsgroup as a whole that does. Good thing that
this is the first time I have taken the time to write whereas I usually
watch from a distance. (No, not because you guys smell).
Although I am very curious as to whom will be cast in the movie, I am
not going to go around starting false rumors, etc. So long and thanks for
all the fish.

Carole,
I think that when he said Oprah Winfrey would be casted in the movie, he
meant as Arthur Dent. Not as trillion. He meant it as the most unlikely
person to play the part.

Arthur Dent is white, English, and male. Oprah is black, American, and
female. The most different from the character. He did not intend for it to
be assumed that Oprah was playing Trillion.

Bollocks! I've been to a slightly parallel Universe where the new
World's Most Popular Opera is about the Ford Prefect auto and has a lead
character whose house is blown up by a singing madwoman named "Whitney."

Yes, I think it's a sort of protest against race discrimination, backlash
and antiamerican tendencies. So this cast will be the most improbable one,
in a way, but it will inspire and move the critics by its unforeseenness.
Personally, I think it's a very good turn in the game.

There are PLENTY of actors who can at least mimick english accents,
and several who actually speak with the bluh'y accent. It's not hard
to impersonate, and any actor who grew up on stage has probably done
at least no less than 2.1 million english bits (figure rounded up).

Has anyone considered the possibility of Jim Carrey as (please don't hurt
me) Arthur? Now I know you all have your hearts set on a Brit, but the man
can act. The Truman Show proved that (whether you liked the ending or not).
Arthur is just supposed to be this ordinary guy and I think Carrey plays
that type of role beautifully.

You *are* kidding, right?
Okay, if you are not: YES! We have discussed that! Long and hard, and
after that longer and harder! Most of us agree that Jim Carrey would
*not* suit the role of Arthur! Simply for the exact opposite reason of
yours: Jim Carrey is *not* able to play normal. All the same a lot of
humour in HHGTTG is based on the way Arthur says e.g. "So I'm a
masochist on a diet, am I?" without... well.. without having to give a
crazy grin or something like Jim Carrey certainly would.
Well, I like some Jim Carrey movies and all, but in HHGTTG, and
especially as Arthur? You must be mad!

A few facts:
Jim Carrey was in a magazine a while ago said to be chosen for the
role of Ford Prefect. THIS IS NOT TRUE!
Douglas Noel Adams (Yes, that Douglas Adams) posted here to tell us,
less than tw oweeks ago, that noone has been chosen for the cast yet!

I would like to have ended this letter with saying: Please don't start
that discussion again, but with myself being the first to take the
bait, who am I to judge?

Truman Show prove that. I enjoy his normal characters much more that his
goofballs, and could see him in HHGG. I'm glad that someone had the
courage to mention it.

Goddamnit, he was never going to play Arthur Dent but was rumoured to play
Ford Prefect. I remember this well because I posted the whole news report
from a paper on this group, everyone was up in arms about the idea and
Douglas Adams said anyway that the rumour was a load of crap (In some
slightly wittier way).

Are you honestly suggesting they try one of those no-talent hacks who try to
make a funny show and fail every week? I can't even stand to watch it anymore.
