I'm trying to search Google Groups for posts made by Douglas Adams.
Unfortunately, he used a lot of e-mail addresses through the years. So
far I have:

d...@tdv.com
ada...@cerf.net
d...@dadams.demon.co.uk
ada...@nic.cerf.net

Can anyone help me to add to this list?

Go to the Wayback Machine (use Google, I can't remember the actual
URL...) and type www.planetmagrathea.com into the box. Then go to one
of the copies of the website from around 2005 and if you look around,
you'll see that there's already a complete archive on that site, thus
saving you the time and effort. The website no longer exists, however,
so this really is the only way to do it!

Of course, planetmagrathea.com was M.J. Simpson's website devoted to all
things Hitchhiker, and if you have time, it's well worth having a decent
look around, because there's some really good information on there. I
keep meaning to e-mail Simo about hosting a mirror on my server but I've
never quite gotten around to doing so.

Is Simo even vaguelly interested in reviving even the merest mention
of his
once-was-a-fan-of-Douglas Adams time of life? His hissy fit about the
movie
was pretty serious and I've heard nill about him since.

He certainly knew his HHG lore though.

It wasn't a 'hissy fit' - if you were receiving hate mail and death
threats after posting a review of the movie when you'd been planning to
quit Douglas Adams-related journalism within six months of its release,
maybe you'd have bowed out as well.

Simo is not, in any way, interested in revisiting Hitchhiker's. He's
still well, though - I live in the same city as him and I sometimes bump
into him at conventions and the like. The last one I saw him at
would've been Orbital, at Easter.

What is he interested in nowadays? Can you tell us about that?

Death threats? Blimey.

So how's he doing, and what's he up to these days? Anything
fandom-related?

Fair enough regarding death threats then (which I did not know, he did
not mention at the time from my recollection). Neither had I heard
before
that he was already planning to quite Adams-related journalism -
another
item he seemed to have left out of his 'screw you guys, I'm going
home'
type leaving-the-scene. What I *did* see was his reaction at the
time - and it sure did appear as a hissy fit.

(though to be fair, it sure wasn't... people get over hissy fits)

Well, good that he's well then.

His website is http://www.mjsimpson.co.uk/ - I don't check it, if I'm
being honest, but I believe it's updated regularly... I bump into him
occasionally - for instance, he was at a zombie film marathon in
Leicester last year that I went to, which was good fun.

On reflection, it's entirely possible that my recollection of this was
based on a conversation I had with someone else around the time that the
events transpired, and that the someone else was exaggerating about
something similar that'd happened to them.

What is definitely true is that he was getting literally hundreds of
hate e-mails every day. If that was the situation in which I found
myself, I'd quit Hitchhiker's fandom as well.

From the explanation he posted in 2005, when he closed his website:

"In late 2004 I resolved to stop writing about Hitchhiker's Guide after
6th May 2005, which was at that time the projected release date for the
film. I have told plenty of people about this decision over the past few
months. I had intended to keep Planet Magrathea going beyond then
because I know that a lot of people find it a useful site and it just
about pays for itself through Amazon and Google links."

So, no, he didn't leave it out.

I stand corrected then. I may be projecting 'hissy' from other
heated email conversations I've witnessed Simo be party to.

I think there is still a distinction between 'stopping writing about'
and 'quitting fandom of' though. Given the hatemail he was getting,
not wanting to participate any longer is perhaps understandable.
I would wonder though how much of the mail was from genuine fellow
Adams fan community folk, and how much from the tangent fans...
people who liked HHG, knew about and looked forward to the movie,
but weren't involved in the actual fan communities?

Anyway, just idle speculation. I know nobody really has answers
to this. I just hope real Adams fans would be more civil really?

*shrugs*

Thanks. I'll give it a look-see.
