Yes, another question about the music from the radio series. Please bear with me, though - I've done my homework on this and am having trouble tracking down a relatively small number of the tracks and/or pieces.

I've used the original scripts as the source, and am extremely familiar with the series, having listened to the first two series probably hundreds of times and the last three dozens of times.

I'm having difficulty identifying the source for the following tracks:

Mikrophoniet (Stockhausen - Karlheinz Stockhausen has two albums called "Mikrophonie I" and "Mikrophonie II", but the only references I can find with Google to this specific title relate back to the listing from the scripts. The recordings of these that I've found don't seem to have a track that just contains the periodic sound of - I think - low-octave piano strings being hit with a small hammer).

That's Entertainment - there are /lots/ of versions of this available on (for example) Spotify, but none of those seem to be the specific version that was used in the series (they're all too fast in the instrumental section). Does anyone know which recording this came from?

Rock and Roll Music - The Beatles probably did the recording for this (I thought it was credited in the scripts, but both the original and 10-year anniversary editions don't list this song in the song credits for the third fit). Pointers to the correct recording (along with perhaps recordings of Fit the Third taken off the air, since it's not included in the commercial releases, and I've mislaid my cassettes with off-air recordings) appreciated. :)

Volumina and Lontano - Spotify has recordings of both of these Ligeti pieces, but it'd be nice to know which recording was used in making the programme.

Same thing for Also Sprach Zarathustra - there are many recordings available, but it'd be interesting to hear the one that was used in the series.

Also something that I discovered in looking for the album "In Search of Ancient Gods" - it seems the track listing changed over the years. The scripts credit the song used as "Miracles of the Gods", but it seems (at least from the recording I found) that it is "Past Future", though another entry in CDDB lists the same time index as being "Moon City". Does anyone know if there were indeed three different versions of this album, and which title is correct?

Thanks for any pointers.

Shoot. :(

For those curious, what I'm doing here is building a playlist - I'd be happy to share the Spotify result when done, though some of the tracks are local files only (not in Spotify's catalog), but I think the list itself still would/could be published pretty easily.

I started this project some time ago, but when I found Einstieg in their catalog, I started looking and was surprised to find some of the other albums there as well (Rainbow in Curved Air, Oxygene, Cachaca, etc). Interestingly, Journey of the Sorcerer is not there (at least, not the original from One of These Nights - they've got the movie version, but I prefer the original and have owned the CD for years).

But it's interesting hearing the music out of the context of the series.

I'm not on spotify (and have no interest in joining), but a list of full
tracks and recording details - that sounds interesting for sure :)

My own 'collect the HHG music' has only run as far as a couple of the
most iconic pieces - Rainbow in Curved Air, Journey of the Sorcerer
(original Eagles version only), and the Marvin singles.

Now that the idea is here, I'm wondering how long till the idea tickles
me into action too. (nah, I'll just wait for your research to complete?
:)

I assume you've seen:

...and I'm curious if you've heard of anything more about the 'Royal
Martian Orchestra' - credited for the strings on Journey.
Just a jokey name as far as I can tell? But who are they?
(wholly apropriate though! :)

And the most obscure out-of-context thing I discovered recently, is what
I now consider to be kind of the 'opposite' phrase to the famous Don't
Panic. From the vinyl pressings of One of These Nights, was engraved the
text "Don't worry -- Nothing will be O.K!"

I've probably got most of that info, so I'd be happy to compile it and publish it somewhere as I get nearer completion.

Spotify does have a "free" option, too - and I know that posts on Facebook can play in the browser. They have a button that might link to it as well, so I'll see if that works with this one. I'm fairly new to Spotify, so may not have figured it all out yet.

Now you mention it, I think I may have heard the Marvin singles before - seems to me they might've been produced along with some of the Doctor Demento stuff, but I might be thinking of something else. I'll have to do some searching tomorrow.
I hadn't, but that list looks to be taken from the radio series scripts. It most certainly had to have been in the list of sites that showed as a hit for the Stockhausen title.

I think I always assumed it was an in-joke for The Eagles. I've never heard of them outside of that one album.

LOL, I hadn't heard that. I wonder if that found it into the CD or liner notes somewhere that I hadn't noticed.
