WHO IS DON IMUS?
Don Imus is a morning radio talk show host whose program consists of
outrageous humor, important political figures such as President Clinton,
Robert Dole and Alfonse D'Amato, parodies of Richard Nixon and Rush=
Limbaugh
(among others ), conversation on topics of the day, and talk with other
guests of the media and the political world such as Dan Rather and Jeff
Greenfield .
WHAT IS "IMUS IN THE MORNING" ?
The Imus in the Morning program debuted in NYC in 1970 on 66 AM WNBC. After
moving his program back to Cleveland in 1978, Imus returned to NYC on Sept.
3, 1979, opening up with the Right Reverend Dr. Billy Sol Hargus. His old
program (the 1st Era) consisted of Rev. Hargus, Crazy Bob, oldies and the
Top 40. However
in 1987, WNBC was sold to WFAN. WFAN is an all-sports station, and instead
of moving
to sports, Imus changed the whole character of his show, moving to all-=
talk,
current events, humor and parodies, and occasional music. Imus finally
moved to syndication
in 1993. He is now heard in every major market and on over 60 stations in
the USA
Thanks to Mario Labot 74733...@compuserve.com for getting me to add this

IMUS and his brother Fred were members of a rock group. Fred wrote, Don=
sang.
But in order for your songs to get on the radio, you had to pay the DJ. Imus
figured to save the money he'd become a DJ himself and play his own tunes.
This is where his career started.
Imus is a member of the Radio Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He has also won numerous Marconi awards.
Imus moved around a lot, station to station, town to town. In 1969-70, Imus
was voted DJ of the Year by Billboard Magazine. Many stations were after=
him.
The Imus in the Morning Program started off on 66AM WNBC in NYC, in 1971(?).
After being fired and relocating to Cleveland for a while, NBC wanted Imus
back in
New York. So on September 3, 1979, Imus started off his first program back=
in
NYC
with the Reverend Billy Sol Hargis.
In 1987, WNBC announced that it was selling it's frequency. This came as a
shock to NYC, because NBC was a major radio station in NYC. The frequency=
660
AM
was sold to a private group, which was planning to move it's current=
station,
Sports Radio 1050AM WHN, to the 660 frequency. It soon became Sports Radio
66AM
WFAN
Imus left his usual programming of playing the Top 40 and Oldies for all-
talk . The show, from 1987 to about 1990, did not talk much about
politics. However, during the Gulf War, Imus' programming changed to include
more
politics and current events. He had a new wave of guests. This was also the
first time
that Imus had major political guests, starting out with Alfonse D'Amato,
Senator from
NY.
In 1983 (?), Imus was one of VH-1's original V-Jays. Just imagine Imus introducing video's by Laura Bradigan or Duran Duran.
Imus used to host a radiothon for The Tommorows Childern Foundation in Hackensack, NJ for the fight against cancer in children. The radiothon raised over $5million dollars and a hospital was builtand named after Imus (The John Donald Imus Hospital for Childern with Cancer).
Imus now does a radiothon for the research of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. WFAN's General Manager, Joe Hollander, lost his infant daughter to SIDS. Imus, the next day on the air, was extremely shaken up and wanted answers. The radiothon is now done for the CJ (Hollander's daughter) Foundation for SIDS.
A lot of people have been trying to get me to include a piece on Imus' drug addiction. Well, it's a long story. Imus abused alcohol and drugs for many years, until he decided (with support and encouragement from Charles McCord) to end it. Imus claims he had his last drink somewhere in 1986. For years,as Imus often tells us, he missed many days of work because of drugs and alcohol. But suprisingly, he was never fired for missing work. He once missed three days of work without calling in.
Imus once told a story where he was in Texas and needed to get to the airport, out of his mind (alcohol or drugs) he went to a Cadillac dealership, bought a Cadillac with cash out of his pocket, drove to the airport, left the car in the parking lot, and came home to New York. After his momentary lapse of reason ended, Imus eventually returned the Cadillac and got his money back.
In 1993, the time slot after Imus' show in NYC was open. Local broadcasters Mike Lupica and Len Berman got the slot. Imus mocked Berman, calling him "Lenny the Jew" in a German accent (Berman is Jewish). Berman shortly left the station and his leaving became a media circus between Berman and Imus in the local papers.
During the summer of 1995, Imus battled it out with Metro Traffic, who does the traffic on FAN. Andy O'Rourke, Metro Traffic's "Eye In the Sky", was fired for undisclosed reasons. Imus, who knew why O'Rourke was fired, claimed that he was unjustly fired and if Metro Traffic did not rehire O'Rourke, Imus would come public with why he was unjustly fired. For close to a week, Imus did not allow the traffic to be relayed on his program. To be fair to the traffic sponsors, Imus would do a spot for the advertiser. O'Rourke was rehired, and Imus allowed the traffic to be relayed once again.
In 1993, Imus worked out a deal with Westward One to syndicate his show
across the country. Today, his show is heard in every major market and on
over 60 stations.
Stern occupied the afternoon slot on WNBC from 1983-85?. Stern played music, and well, his show was very similar to
Imus'.
They both went their ways and eventually Stern earned a spot on a NYC
station, had a
hideous TV show on WWOR Secaucus, NJ, and was syndicated before Imus. Many
will
tell you ( including Imus) that Stern "stole" Imus' gig, "along with every
other local
morning talkshow host moron".
Imus said that if Stern ever beat Imus in ratings, Imus would eat a dead
dog's penis. Imus said it "tasted good", however, we don't know for sure.
During the NBC days, Imus and Stern both appeared in a radio ad, "If we're
so
bad, we wouldn't be that good", read the caption.
Approx in the spring of 1986, Imus and McCord appeared on Channel 4
WNBC-TV's
" Live at Five" . Imus made an announcement that would "shake 30 Rockefeller
Center". It was rumored that Imus would buy WNBC 66AM. What it was was a
$66,000 Joke Contest, which Charles went crazy at. A caller told Imus that
his appearance on "Live at Five" was "an all-time low".
In 1991 after Super Bowl XXV, Imus had Bill Parcells, then headcoach of the
Giants, on the program. Parcells commented about Scott Norwood's missed
fieldgoal.
These comments received attention from the media, especially Buffalo. Many
wondered if Imus used Rob Bartlett for the voice-over of Parcells.
Art Rust, Jr., who was a NYC radio personality on 770AM WABC, tried out for
WFAN, he got the FAN's frequency messed up, calling it 670AM instead of
660AM. Imus ridiculed Rust for a while, which Rust did not appreciate. Rust,
subsequently, did not get the job. Imus' doing?
Eileen Marchese Cohen, the Metro Traffic reporter who does the traffic on
Imus, has become a constant target for Imus, especially her husband Steve
Cohen, who is a producer on FAN. Imus often asks Eileen "how can you stay
married to that
Jew?", "is Steve circumcised?" and " what is your sex life like?". Sometimes
reluctant, Eileen gives honest answers. Imus has opened up broadcasts
saying, " Here with the NYNEX Mobile FAN highway patrol is Eileen Marchase
Cohen. Mornin' Linnie, wanna' squeeze my weanie'"
At WNBC after Imus' new 1979 start, he had a new producer, Lyndon Abell.
When
Imus was on tour for his new syndication, Abell went to WTEM in D.C. Abell
dropped by,expecting Imus to be surprised. However, Imus made his old
producer sit in
the control room behind the glass. Imus said, on the air, that Abell
"supplied drugs" to
him. Happy Reunion.
In 1992, Imus worked a deal out with Gov. Lowell Weicker of CT, one of Imus'
first guests, where the two would switch jobs for a day. At 8:00, Imus was
sworn
in as Gov.of CT. He said he planned to " fry a couple of people while I'm in
office".
However, nothing happened.

Hey Dave... not a bad FAQ; of course I'm going to comment on just one or
two points...
<snip>
>In 1993, Imus worked out a deal with Westward One to syndicate his show
>across the country. Today, his show is heard in every major market and on
>over 60 stations.
First, Imus "stole" this idea from Howard. This will become relevant
later.
>Stern occupied the afternoon slot on WNBC from 1983-85?. Stern played
music,
>and well, his show was very similar to
>Imus'.
"Similar"?? Not quite, the Stern show was funny... the Stern show was #1
in his time slot... Imus used to stay and gather material for his show
from Howard. The last fact is documented by air checks.
>They both went their ways and eventually Stern earned a spot on a NYC
>station, had a
>hideous TV show on WWOR Secaucus, NJ, and was syndicated before Imus.
Many
>will
>tell you ( including Imus) that Stern "stole" Imus' gig, "along with
every
>other local
>morning talkshow host moron".
Now... (5 points for each correct answer)... who jettisoned music
first?... who interacted with their traffic person first?... who did Scott
Muni first?... who mentioned other DJs and radio stations (by name) first?
who interacted with his "newsperson" first?...
The fact is that the only thing Imus did b4 Howard was... he was born
first ... period.
>Imus said that if Stern ever beat Imus in ratings, Imus would eat a dead
>dog's penis. Imus said it "tasted good", however, we don't know for sure.
>During the NBC days, Imus and Stern both appeared in a radio ad, "If
we're
> so
>bad, we wouldn't be that good", read the caption
The problem Howard Stern (and many of his fans) have with Don Imus is that
Imus' present day show is a complete "lift" of the whole "Stern
personality". If Imus would ever admit this, it would go very far in
"PERHAPS" getting these two closer together. I think Imus would not mind a
"truce"... if fact, Imus even taped a birthday message for Howard during
Howard's first year with K-ROCK... it went something like this:
"Happy Birthday, Howard. Since you left WNBC, we lost an entire
civilization over here..."
A dead dog's penis is one thing... ack'ing Howard as the modern day radio
trendsetter would be better.
-C-
Watch this space
Another minor omission...I didn't see "Bobo" (I THINK that was
the name) mentioned. You know...the character doing the Christmas
Story in Brooklyn "merry christmas to all...shuddup".
Finally, you might also want to mention the fact that "They
Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore" is the official theme song of
the Imus in the Morning Program. I wonder if Kinky would let you put
the lyrics in the FAQ. :)
Sorry for all this criticism. I like the FAQ, I really do! :)
Anyway, you're in good company. I ranted and raved when the Allmighty
Don himself metioned on the air that he had seen a message base about
himself. Imagine...talking about this Newsgroup as if it were based
on AOL. Must've been a powerbook induced oversight. :)
