Looks like Google will be saying so long, farewell, bye-bye to new Usenet text based posts. https://support.google.com/groups/answer/11036538?visit_id=638384883675451244-149195102&p=usenet&rd=1

Google puts a little alert over the posts on my Macbook Air about the end of Google Groups. I think I switched to GG from Thunderbird and
AiOE because of a software problem. The only group I frequent that has any life is alt.home.repair. It does have home repair issues but has morphed into something like some old farts sitting around a morning coffee table. Politics and the T Man are frequent topics.

Me too. I think aioe is now dead and eternal september can get flaky.
I see no reason to get paid access as I only go to a few groups. Now
that google groups is leaving it will mean more of a downhill spiral to
usenet.

It was more fun in the old days and the most active group ahr is now as
you describe.

_______________
Y'know, I blame "social" websites for this mess.

Places like Facebook, Twitter/Shitter/X or whatever their name
is this month. They're all like toilets, they sucked away all the
good, legitimate traffic from Usenet groups, and from topic-
specific private and public moderated forums.

This leaves cracks in the pavement so to speak, for the bots and
other dreck to creep in and ruin the place!

I'm a regular on several car-related forums, including one Filipino
based site, and for the most part, it's all good, clean car stuff -
driving cars, best SUV to buy, tire recommendations, how handle
a ticket if you get one, etc.

I for one would NEVER join a car- or any other topic - related group on
Facebook, for instance. I ask a simple underhood question, I get ten
conflicting answers, it devolves into argument, finger-pointing,
name-calling, political jabs, conspiracy spins, and ultimately someone
gets banned or ends up in "FB jail".

Noooooooo.....

thank you!

It's a shame that cesspools like that have won out over the bastions of
civility that Usenet and moderated closed forums used to be.

It started decades ago when isp's stopped giving free use net usage.

That could also be a contributing factor, good point. It's not just one thing or another. Either way, a
damn shame, since Google groups was a good way to bring Usenet to the masses.
