Did a re-read on this -- I believe it was the 3rd DOC adventure.
DOC is still a killing machine in this one -- bare-hands, firearms, it doesn't matter, he piles up the body county.
And it isn't just Monk and Ham, but all the five are arguing with each other.
The Smoke of Eternity was enough to carry the whole book, but then we get dinosaurs too! Enough plot for two books. Makes you wonder why "to be continued" never caught on with DOC.

Actually, it was the second adventure.
Some of the early ones are really hard for me to read. Not because they
aren't good yarns, they are. But the characters are different. It's not
the Doc & Company that I know. Like Doc killing. After a while they
settled into the characters that they would be. They all argued, Johnny
didn't have his big words, all of their personalities seemed a bit off.
Good reads, just not classic Doc.

This has been one of my favorite Docs, if not my top one. Who could ask
for more story. Yes, as mentioned in followup posts, the characters
haven't gelled into the ones we get to know later. But, boy, the action
is non-stop.
It's just plain fun to read. (And it's one of the few Docs that I've
read multiple times.)
