It looks like Sofía Vergara took her role as Griselda Blanco very
seriously. On Tuesday night’s (Jan. 16) episode of The Tonight Show, the
actress hilariously led the audience to believe she did cocaine on the set
of the upcoming Netflix miniseries Griselda.
The show, in which Vergara stars as the titular character, is based on the
real-life Colombian businesswoman who, aside from caring for four
children, ran a profitable drug cartel in the 1970s and ’80s.
According to the Modern Family star, director André Baiz became her
“anchor” as she learned to master the role.
“I didn’t know anything. He taught me how to smoke. He taught me how to do
cocaine. He taught me a lot,” she said, before the audience erupted into
laughter and host Jimmy Fallon nervously chimed in, “Alright, hold on,
hold on.”
However, an oblivious Vergara continued, “It was amazing because I was 51
years old and I didn’t even know how to, you know, how to light a
cigarette. I’ve never done cocaine. So it’s like, it was amazing. It was
like, a great experience.”
The audience began cackling once again, prompting Vergara to finally catch
on to what she was implying.
“The cocaine that I did was fake,” she quickly clarified. “But I had to
pretend. The cigarettes are also fake. Everything was, it’s fake. But the
acting was real.”
Vergara’s naturally funny nature not only came through while chatting
about her latest project, but also while talking about the close
relationship she shares with her former Modern Family castmates.
“We’re always on chats. The only one that is not really good because he’s
very old is Ed O’Neill,” she joked about her onscreen husband. “He’s not
good with them. He’s not good with the texting. We joke about something or
we say something and he reacts like 26 weeks later. And then nobody knows
what he’s talking about.”
When Fallon wondered if we’d be getting a reboot from them any time soon,
Vergara reminded him that it’s “only been four years.”
“It doesn’t seem right. I feel like we need a little more time,” she said,
before quipping, “Well, but we don’t have much time because Ed is old so.”
In the meantime, you can catch Vergara in Griselda when it premieres on
Netflix on Jan. 25.
