THE UNOFFICIAL DIRK PITT MOVIE POLL

And the voting continutes ...
"Once you have flown, you will walk the earth with
your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been,
there you long to return." -- Leonardo da Vinci.
Every single time I have tried to view the so called results, they have been
non-existent. I believe that once I actually attempted to vote, but nothing
happened. I'm sick of seeing this crap in our newsgroup, even if it is once
every five months.
Get rid of it! It's pointless! You must have all of ten people voting for it!
It's a waste of time and bandwidth.
Get RID OF THE GODDAMN THING, and take yourself with it!

There are a lot of great suggestions, such as Sharon Stone playing
Loren. But no one has solved the riddle of who to play Dirk. Dom
Deluise as Perlmutter is great! But you'd have to find a role for Burt
Reynolds, as I don't think I've ever seen Dom alone:-)

"Night Probe" and "Raise the Titanic" were my two favorite Pitt books. I still
think "Night Probe" would make an excellent movie. Connery would play a great
Sandecker, and would also be good in the Shaw/Bond role.

A hard role to cast. I always saw a younger Kathleen Turner as Loren, but
Turner got too old for the part. Sharon Stone would have to dye her hair as
Loren was a brunette.
But no one has solved the riddle of who to play Dirk.
It's hard to say who would make a good Pitt; it all depends on which Book
you're talking about. He has aged about 15 years throughout the Cussler books
("Raise The Titanic" took place in the mid-1980's and "Flood Tide" took place
in 2000); in the earlier books he was young and handsome and looked like he
just stepped off the lifeguard chair at Venice Beach. Ten years ago Kevin
Costner would have been the perfect "younger" Pitt, but he has gotten too old
for the part.
But in the later books Pitt is in his late forties and is somewhat worn due to
all the vicious beatings and fights he has been involved in, and is still
handsome but scarred. In a film version of "Flood Tide" I think an actor like
Ed Harris would be the right guy to play the "older" Pitt.

When I participated in the original poll, I left this one blank, because I
thought the only actors who could have played him, John Candy and Orson Welles,
were both dead. But after thinking about it I agree that James Earl Jones
would be excellent in the part.
I wish they would give Dirk Pitt another shot at the movies; if they had filmed
"Raise the Titanic" according to the book it would have been a super movie.
But the filmmakers didn't want to piss off the Soviets so the removed the part
with the Soviets taking over the Big T. And they threw that crazy subplot into
the movie about the Byzanium bomb. And in the end of the movie they left the
guy's burial site alone and walked away. I don't think I've ever been as
disappointed with a film adaptation of a book as I was with this one.

While I like Kevin Costner, I have do admit he does come across a a bit
'flat' and 'lifeless' in some rolls. I'm not sure he could come across with
the sarcasm, wit, humour, etc that make up Pitt's character.

I too feel that another Pitt movies should be made, but *only* if it closely
parallels the book (and I mean REALLY close!). "Titanic" was a disaster I
don't want to see happen again.
Speaking of Titanic, it is the only book I haven't read yet (I've read all
twice, except Vixon 03, Pacific Vortex and Deep Six - which I'm reading
now). I think the problem was I saw the movie first (this was before I
discovered Cussler) and that threw me right off. But one day... And what is
this crap with walking away from the grave at the end? I'm damn sure that
sort of thing would never have happened in the book (even if a scene so
stupid was written in). I don't think Pitt is that kind of person.
