Did anyone go & see Bowie's Glass Spider Tour?

I was well into Bowie when I was 12 or 13 ish & me & my mate went to
see him at Sunderland for the Glass Spider Tour.

Now, I don't know if it was just me, but although I love Bowie with a
passion...
I didn't think the show was very good. The band weren't too hot & I wasn't
into
hearing all his pop type hits. (I hope I'm not offending anyone here - this
might
be someones favourite Bowie band/era)...in fact, Big Country blew Bowie off
the stage
& I ended up going to see them about 5 times afterwards.

The one thing that made it worthwhile was that he did "Big Brother", "All
the Madmen"
& "Sons of the Silent Age". Which made my day.

However, it really put me off going to see Bowie live....(for about 15
years). When
my mate offered me a free ticket for the 'Sound & Vision' tour I even turned
him
down, even though I only listened to Bowie & no one else at the time.

Anyway, I eventually went to see him at Manchester on this Reality tour
thing & I
was blown away. Nobody told me how great his band has been lately!

So was I alone in thinking that tour wasn't too good? Or was it just that
particular show?

I caught the tour in Hamburg (with Nina Hagen, Udo Lindenberg, Wolfgang
Niedecken and even bleeding Erasure as supporting acts) and I must say that
I wasn't swept away - but hey; it was the 80's, the worse decade in the
history of music!

I saw the "Glass Spider" tour.
In San Jose.
And, yeah, as he did last year (when playing the HP Pavilion), there was a
snippet of "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" sung in 87 (or was it 86?) at
the Spartan Stadium.
In retrospect, I liked the SOUND AND VISION tour more.
It was hard to makes sense of what was going on up on the stage from far
away.
Still, it was no small thrill to hear songs such as "Absolute Beginners" and
"All the Madmen."

But here's the funny thing ~ I love the "Glass Spider" dvd.
It's probably my favorite of the lot (although that may change once the
REALITY dvd hits the stores this month).
SERIOUS MOONLIGHT seems a bit too slick (even though "Glass Spider" may as
well be Pop on Broadway).....and I find the ZIGGY movie to be pretty
unwatchable.
The "Glass Spider" show really does translate well onto the TV screen.
It seems cohesive and much like a big party of jumbled fun.

Those gold-winged boots will never make the grade, however.....

With the likes of Joe Jackson, U2, The Clash, Prince, Springsteen, Elvis
Costello, Madonna, The Police, The Smiths, The Cure, Little Steven, Cyndi
Lauper, stellar solo work by folks such as Peter Gabriel/Paul Simon/Daniel
Lanois/Graham Parker...as well as break-throughs for groups such as The
Neville Brothers, The Waterboys, Talking Heads....plus performers such as
Tom Waits breaking form and going off into his own terrain.....and the list
could go on and on.....I really think the 1980s gets a bum shake.

Yeah, it had its share of crap.....but what decade didn't?

I went to Glass Spider Sunderland. My memories of it are:- it rained from
the heavens (often the case when I go to see Bowie outdoors), he came on
late and said hello NEWCASTLE which does not go down well in Sunderland, and
Big Country did blow Bowie off stage with a fantastic extended set. I later
went to see Big Country at the Mayfair and that confirmed to me what a great
live band they were.

Yeh that's right,
he said 'hello newcastle', but i thought he was saying it tongue in cheek
sort of...

& I went to see Big Country at the Mayfair as well. Did Diesel Park West
support
them or something?

Did u actually go & see the S2S, Aladdin & Diamand Dog tours?

That's so annoying, mind I was only 1 year old when Aladdin Sane
was released so I probably would not have appreciated it.

If you look at the footage from the 1978 tour
and read the reports, that looks pretty impressive.

I saw it in Raliegh, NC, if I'm not mistaken. I lived in Charlotte, NC then,
so had to drive up. Could have been Greensboro... it was OK, my buddy & I
were chemically "enhanced", so we really enjoyed it. No lingering memories
afterwards, though, I only remember DB's hairdo looked ridiculous and I
thought it was cool he let Peter Frampton <guitarist in that tour> play a
bit of
"Do You Feel Like We Do", between songs....

Agree with the earlier sentiments........The show was possibly his worst
but, strangely, the DVD is entertaining. The theatrics work on the small
screen but not on the stage.

I was at Milton Keynes for S&V when the man said "Last time in London for
this one" - Not nearly as good as "Good evening Newcastle" in Sunderland
though - brilliant.

Everyone says 'Hi'

I had a similar experience, except the BC/Bowie show was at Wembley and the
BC show was at Hammersmith Odeon. *Damn*, they were great.

To the original poster: Glass Spider was the first time *I* saw Bowie, too
(aged about 12), and no, it wasn't the best introduction. On the plus side,
it means the Bowie shows I've seen have only gotten better... :-)

Yeah A Lad was my first, at a very young age. I saw quit a few shows on the DD
tour, and had by that time discovered recreational drugs. So those are my
favorites I think, but, then again I think some of it was imagined, and it
plays like a very fragmented, jumped cut movie in my head, that's the only
reason why I didn't rate it my #1 tour
As far as. S2S is concerned, I was something totally new and with what IMHO
were stronger somgs.

Cheers

The main reason I said that was, that, I can only compare shows really, not
tours. And during one of the Reality show's I saw, I remember turning to my
friend and saying this is the best Bowie show I've seen since DD.

Cheers

You reminded me.
Paul Kinder never even returned my Glass Spider Wembley 2nd night negatives.
I took them on a crappy 110 camera from centre barrier and they were mostly crap but all the same,, they do not belong to him.

He is a fuckin thief.

And yes, I was a mug.

The thing is, of all the Bowie fans we ever chilled with only rednik and his pet SnaKe ever took advantage of our generosity and naivety.

Like I've said before, money and low end fan fame makes these cunts tick.

And just like a tick they latch on and take your blood.

Fuckin scum of the earth with a friendly mask.
