I, for one, don't think I saw it. What did you want to know about
Christiane F? And what's so dumb about January 8?

Maybe it's this particular dumb little trivial thing that we actually don't
know about.
ok, again, I seem to be the one to answer,.. Christaine F was basically a
heroin drug movie, I didnt like it, really, it was thrown together, Bowie did
it as a favor. he has such a small part, you cant really call it a bowie movie,
or even soundtrack, I hpe that answers.

I think it is a really good and moving film. I thought the actress who
played Christiane did a great job, I loved that Bowie was in it, and I
like German and always enjoy a chance to hear it being spoken.
> I don't think this is a trivial topic..it's a little obscure maybe...and
Yes, movies with concert appearances by David Bowie are certainly a very
obscure topic on a David Bowie newsgroup. We much prefer arguing about
sadomasochism, xenophobia and Malcolm McDowell.
> everyone should get over their little "Labrynth" and "Space Oddity" deals cause
I don't believe I have a little Labrynth (sic) or Space Oddity deal.
Where does one get them?
> being a fan isn't about obsessing about the most popular thing. For that matter
I resemble that remark!
> it's also not about who was the last one to get in the man's pants.
It may surprise you to learn that Christiane F. has been discussed on
this ng before. And so has Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Man Who Fell to
Earth, Reeves Gabrels, Scary Monsters, Low, Young Americans, Brian Eno,
Just a Gigolo, Ziggy Stardust (album), Ziggy Stardust (movie), Heroes,
Earthling, The Hunger, The Elephant Man, Absolute Beginners, Carlos
Alomar, The Man Who Sold the World, Bowie's eyes, Bowie's brother,
Bowie's son, Bowie's wife, Bowie's ex-wife, Bowie's homes, Bowie's
education, Bowie's penis, Bowie's hair, Bowie's cigarette brand, and
that was just last month, metaphorically speaking anyway.
Sometimes between world tours we have to stretch the envelope a little
to keep the conversation going. Most people are pretty interested in
sex. Not too surprising the conversation might go that way once in a
while.
>For
> christ's sakes who cares!? Listen to the music! Talk about how you think he's a

Well, I'm listening to the Smiths right now, but when it's over, maybe
I'll pop on Diamond Dogs. And oh: "I think David Bowie is a musical
genius."
>You think the dude cares that you know when his
> birthday is? Whatever.
I doubt the, um, "dude" gives a flying psychotic fuck what I know about
anything.
A fairly good rule of thumb on Usenet is, if nobody is discussing the
topics you want to discuss, discuss them yourself. Last time I looked I
wasn't getting a paycheck from you to entertain you with threads to your
liking.

Thank you Kate!! I was about to tell the little shit off . What a fucking
attitude!!! If you want info fast ,you don't post a question to a damn ng ,you
go to websites or somesuch. And since there's probably upteen zillion on Bowie
alone,it wouldn't be that hard.

...Maybe because if you'd looked up the information on Teenage
Wildlife ( http://www.etete.com/Bowie/ ), you wouldn't have needed to
post that, as you can find more information there as any one of us can
probably give?

"I have two very rare photos: one of Houdini locking his keys in his car,

What was your first post? I didn't see it.
Christiane F. was a German-made film based on a book about the teenage drug
scene in mid 70s Berlin. The book made it clear that Bowie was seen as
something of a hero to Christiane F. and other Berlin addicts - the junkie
who made it big as it were. Christiane F. herself was a big Bowie fan and
attended Bowie's 1976 Berlin concert.
The director originally intended to use some concert footage in the film, but
couldn't find anything suitable, so Bowie agreed to shoot a fake concert
scene. The concert scene in the movie with Bowie is both very disturbing and
at the same time affecting. We see Bowie as the remote Thin White Duke
(though the clothes don't match) doing Station to Station, while Christiane
F. and her circle are all shooting up. She then makes her way towards the
stage, high as a kite, and stands at the side of the stage at Bowie's feet,
looking up pathetically at him. He doesn't even notice her, or if he does
doesn't acknowledge it - he remains the distant unapproachable rock God.
This scene may explain why, in the same way that the first word that springs
to mind with the American masses when they think of Bowie is "gay", the word
most strongly associated with him in continental Europe among middle-aged and
older people is "drugs". I once had a conversation with my French
brother-in-law who said that while he liked a lot of Bowie's music, he
couldn't stand the guy. The reasons given were that Bowie was a remote
bastard promoting unhealthy beghaviour among his fans and not caring a whit
for them as people. Some detailed questioning on my part revealed that this
view of Bowie was almost entirely based on that one scene in Christiane F.
(which at the time was a major box office hit in Europe - it was the biggest
ever grosser in Germany).
Bowie didn't really 'do' the soundtrack. Stuff from his Berlin years was used
in the film, and RCA used the chance to make a quick buck on the back of a
very successful movie by releasing a compilation of that era as a soundtrack.
The other noteworthy thing about the film was that it marked the directorial
debut of gifted director, Ulrich Edel, who later went to America and directed
the excellent "Last Exit To Brooklyn" (and later still the
less-than-excellent "Body Of Evidence"), as well as some episodes of "Twin
Peaks".
Slan leat,
Dara (np: David Bowie - I'M AFRAID OF AMERICANS)
It's set in Berlin. Dialogues and actors are German.
The film is not to bad.
The soundtrack uses lot's of Bowie tracks from STATION TO STATION , LOW
,HEROES AND LODGER
Bowie is NOT a character in the film.
You can see him during 10 minutes as HIMSELF in a concert scene.
I'm writing this from memory so I hope I am not making any mistakes :
The HEROES track is part English part German.
In the film there's a concert scene where Christianne goes to see a Bowie
Concert.
But this is very fake , Bowie playbacks (not live) to the live version
from STATION TO STATION (from STAGE live lp)
Although film was made in Berlin . The Bowie shots were actually made in
New York with Carlos Alomar
and other bandmembers from the 1980 Band that never went to tour because of
John Lennons death.
Am I confusing ?
Well after recording & releasing scary monsters David did some US live
appearances with a band
it's the same band you see in the Christianne F. concert. But what you
hear (in the film ) is a 1978
live recording from STAGE.
Furthermore , the shots that show the public attending the concert look
more like people that
would visit an AC/DC concert than one by DB.
I'll better quit my stupid babbling.
Greetings

The panoramic crowd footage in the concert scene is actually lifted from an
AC/DC concert.
Also some people claimed in the early 80's that the track listing of
Christian F was in fact originally meant to be for the
Changes Two album.
The radically different and messy Changes Two track listing that emerged
was based on what Bowie was intending to play on his aborted 1981 World
Tour. Again all the above (besides the AC/DC part) was just hearsay.
