Any incite is appreciated...
Thanks!
"My brother lays upon the rocks, he could be dead, he could be not, he could
be you. [Chameleon], comedian Corinthian, and caricature. Shooting-up
pie-in-the-sky . . ."
Excuse my editorializing, above. I think that line says it all. We are all
the Bewlay Brothers, and sometimes our dreams of the world get smashed, and
though we feel despaired, there is always hope. Nothing is as simple as it
seems, and nothing is more complicated than it really is.
Also, when db started working with Iggy Pop, he started using Bewlay Bros.
Music as the name of his music publishing company. Don't know if that has
anything to do with his relationship to Pop (whatever that may be).

I read somewhere that this song is about David and his brother, but after
reading this, and then listening to the lyrics again, it still doesn't
make too much sense to me. I think this is one of those songs that doesn't
have the same meaning to any two people (remember the discussion of "Panic
in Detroit"?)
Quite clearly ;) the song is about drugs and homosexuality.
Read through the lyrics again with this mind and you'll notice all the
references.

"Bewley Brothers, The" (Bowie): Song on HUNKY DORY (1971) and also used
by Bowie as the name for his publishing company. The
song is believed to be about the relationship between Bowie and his
nine-year older manic-depressive/schizophrenic step-brother Terry Burns. An
alternate mix version of this song is included on the Rykodisc HUNKY DORY
(1971) CD as a bonus track.
If you don't already know about this site, check it out. It's outstanding.

Speaking of which: does anyone know what makes this 'alternative mix' of
"Bewlay Brothers" different, anyhow?

"The passage of my life is measured out in shirts."
Aside from those dixie-cup noises in the beginning (I don't know what they
are) having a slight difference in volume, the two sound extremely alike.

On the original "Hunky Dory", the one released before "Ziggy", the opening
contained the sound of a rocking chair being rocked. On later copies, after
"Ziggy", this was ommitted from the track.
The orinagal RCA CD contained this version. When Ryko re-mastered the album
they included the original version as an alternate version where as it was,
in fact, the proper version. IYKWIM.
