Anyone else having a hard time getting this? Maybe the site is just too
busy or something, but all I've been getting are server errors and the
like. I think it's a cool idea, releasing a song on the web and all, but
it seems Murphy's Law is holding sway today. :)

I gave up trying the other night, and it sounds as if teh situation hasn't
improved much. I figured I'd go back today and try again, if I have
time...

well it sounds as though I've had it pretty easy from this side of the
atlantic. got the file last night, transferred it to a 100MHz 32MB pentium
just now and listened to it, and it sounds fine! now i know someone with a
CD writer on their pc, so maybe...

i mean, crazy trying to describe music in words, but yeah techno, yeah
contorted vocals. i have to listen to it a few more times to get a strong
opinion.

missed all the cu-see-me-by-the-sea-side thingo, but at 3am? no thanks

I have all three version of the mpeg file (5Mb, 3.8Mb and 1.3Mb). If it is

people could ftp them down. It would be like another site? BTW..I have a
75Mhz pentium with 8Mb ram and I cant sense out of the 5Mb file..but the
3.8Mb plays fine...you have been warned! I would do this over the weekend.
Or if I get a few requests I can attach the zip file to return email?

I was trying to dowload the 5 MB version using AOL and the download quit
after
about 2 hours and gave me only about 4.2 MB. I was able to listen to
about
4 1/2 minutes of the song from this incomplete file, though? From what I
have heard, the sound quality seems pretty bad. I downloaded the "Cd
Quality" version
of MPEG audio and I have a Pentium 60, but I don't know if I even want to
try to
put this version on tape...

They both have that "been there--done that" feel for me. Too reminisent

Anyone else get that?

I vote for "Earthling", because of some vague feeling that Bowie's work is
better when focused on the individual and personal rather than the
collective and general. Or maybe his work is better when focused on the
individual within the collective (alienated and isolated) rather than the
individual as part of the collective (cohesive cog). Or something like
that.

I managed to get the 1.3 MB file across using a 28.8 modem. Took half an
hour. It played first time on a PC Video Blaster MPEG card! I didn't
expect it would work. Sounded a bit rubbish. I might try the high quality
MPEG file next. Shouldn't be too difficult to put onto a CD from there. At
least It'll be on the new album if all fails.

This year seems to be "The Year of the Spacemen." Let's see...
ID4, the possibility of life on Mars, and there is going to be a ID4 type
of show on the telly this fall.

Also David said he was going to leave all his hits behind him after the
Sound And Vision tour. (Which was great by the way....;-) And by using
the title "Earthling(s)", it seems that he is taking a backstep towards
"Ziggy", Moonage Daydream, Life on Mars, Lady Stardust, Space Oddity,
Ashes to Ashes, Starman, Five Years, and the list goes on....

One last point... when ever I hear the word "Earthling" all I can picture
is Marvin the Martian saying, "I am going to blow up the Earth with my
space modulator." And those martians that would grow from a pill when
Marvin added water. Maybe he'll have Marvin the Martian on the cover?
Hmmm....

I've just got the high quality MPEG file there. Now, I'm not a great fan
of jungle mixes, but I'm not sure if it's come through uncorrupted. Is it
meant to be full of stutters and squeaky pinging noises? I can definitely
hear a rhythm and bowie's voice, but it sounds corrupted. Is this part of
the joke?

Bowie recognizes his theme all right, but metaphors worn for three days
straight begin to stink.

I loved "Ashes to Ashes", thought that was a great commentary on what was
expressed in "Space Oddity", but when it extended to "Hallo Spaceboy", I
thought, "eccccccchhhh!" There are so many reasons to hate HS. The cloying
third go-round which watered down the impact of the first two excellent
visitations, then there's the NIN cop on the music....and once you eliminate
the music and the lyrics, the only thing left is the advertising campaign. I
can't imagine that the Pet Shop Boys could do any harm.

If Bowie intends to get redundant with his metaphors, maybe he should hire Ray
Walston as his mascot. In that case, the preferred choice would be "Earthling".

Still, I love Bowie's music and appreciate the fact that he's at least got the
gumption to be out there kicking it around instead of reducing himself to the
oldies circuit. Must be great back there on the east coast, seeing a set that
includes highlights from "Outside" as well as catalog stuff that hasn't been
performed in a while.

and I quote from http://www.davidbowie.com/news/index.html, a press
release about the single:

"A distorted vocal haunts a dark, brooding backing track and deep
bassline, with the flanged drum arrangement adding to the overall
psychedelic effect."

I did wonder if this wasn't deliberate so any audio shortcomings might not
be so obvious...

now I just got the new Feelgood mix, so time to give that a spin...

Listen, easier to buy the CD from a import shop. It came out in Britian
this week I believe. Or, get the bootleg tape of the Japanese tour or the
video from the festival in Germany in June. Of course I love just about
anything DB does, but the live versions of TL are better (IMHO) if only
because they rock more....

i SAID yeck to the title too when I first heard it now it's kinda growing
on me ya know????? Are you telling your age with the Ray Walston
reference or are you watching too much Nick at Night <G>????

PS. jealousy alert. The tour was fandamntastic. I hope Bowie is bored one
weekend in December too....I'll go to New York this time....

Stop "Telling Lies", Bonnie, you're getting as bad as Bowie. No, it was not
released in Britain this week. Latest I heard though, BMG should be putting
it out properly some time in November.

That seems to be the consensus among those lucky enough to have heard both.
The best version I have heard is Loreley, followed by Iceland.

my little bunyip. And it wasn't me who said it was coming out last week, it
was......someone else. According to the official Web site, it's coming out
more or less everywhere except North America in November.

My understanding is that Telling Lies only CD excursion will be an album
mix on earthling(s). The three mixes from the Internet are exclusive, and
unless people figure out how to transfer from sound card to tape (Lord
knows I am trying!!!!!!!), then they will alwayts be a sound card file
only! --

I believe it is supposed to be released in the UK sometime this fall or
winter, but who knows for sure???? If it is relased you can usually get it
through one of the stores specializing in imports..
