Some time ago, Dave Barry wrote about "beano" in one of his columns. While
the column was pretty tame, the Portland Oregonian and some other newspaper
censored it. This upset Dave and he wrote another very funny column in
which he substituted Portland Oregonian and the other newspaper's name for
certain portions of a person's anatomy.

Well, I used to enjoy Dave's column before I moved to the Portland Area.
But, now my "new" newspaper, the Portland Oregonian doesn't carry Dave's
column (you can guess why).

Anyway, does anyone know how I can get a reprint of the column in which
Dave made fun of the Oregonian? I'd like to post it at work since my
coworkers who read the Oregonian obviously didn't get a chance to read it.

Thanks,

I tried emailing this, but both attempts bounced.

First of all, the Oregonian does carry Dave's column. It's in the Sunday
paper in the Northwest Living II section. Dave's column is also in the
This Week newspaper which is free and you should be able to get it in
McMinnville.

However, the Oregonian didn't print the one that makes fun of the Big O
because (according to them) it was tasteless and obscene. I have a copy
of that column which I got out of This Week. I don't know how I'd get a
xerox of it to you, though. I work up in Aloha.

Also, the Oregonian *censors* the contents of the column, because we
apparently (as adults.... well, most of us) can be harmed by reading
bad words in a newspaper. "This Week" censors it less, but there are
still occasional differences between the oroginal column at what
appears in either This Week or "the big O".

The Big O's censoring blows some of the setups for the jokes
sometimes, but I can usually reverse-engineer what the setup was,
confirming it two days later when "This Week" publishes the less
bastardized version.

relevant to afb readers: do other papers "clean up" his words as well?
Or is this strictly a prudish local tradition? (As in, why would the
Big O carry Barry, knowing full well how he writes, and then delete
some of his funnier lines?)

Just another Barry reader,

They do indeed. The Orange County Register has been pretty good about
it recently, but that hilarious toilet snake article was obviously chopped.
Scumbags... I'd like to see the full version.

Thanks for the responses. I'll examine next Sunday's Living section more
carefully!
