Here is something to while away the time, a program called
Broadcastify available at no charge to listen to police, fire,
aviation, rail and marine communications. You can listen on your
computer or iphone by city, county, or state in the U.S., or by
country. If you don't know what to select then you can click on the
"Top Listeners" at the very top of the home page. Right now it's the
Chicago P.D. where there is always a lot going on

I use an app called Scanner Radio on my Android phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scannerradio&hl=en

Does basically the same thing.

Is there a lot of crime chatter in rural Texas or is it mainly escaped cows?

I hardly ever listen to it unless I know of something going on or I hear
a bunch of sirens in the background. It's pretty peaceful out here.

I went to the site but it won't download to my windows computer.
Broadcastify can be used as a web site on any computer without
downloading anything. I'll try your program on my Chromebook and see
how it compares (if you can't get Bulgarian public safety
communications then what good is it?).

Where hardly is heard a discouraging word?

Hmm. I thought it might have been instructive to listen in
to the Istanbul plod at the moment but they aren't listed.
And Scotland is listed but not actually covered, so I can't
find out any more about the serious traffic accident on the
South Bridge in Edinburgh earlier tonight.

Maybe someday.

No, there are a lot of discouraging words. Mostly from the old farts
who think they should be in charge because they've lived in the area for
ever. I have actually heard them say that no one should be allowed to
vote unless they owned more than 50 acres of land and lived here for
more than 20 years. Our town is less than 2 miles from I 35W, in a
major growth corridor. There is a small faction in the town that fight
any growth tooth and nail. It's not like they're trying to cram houses
together. We're talking mostly 1 acre lots, or larger. There is some
high density housing close to the interstate, but most of what is being
fought are the 1 acre lots.

But we're still growing, in spite of the old farts. The industrial part
of town, at I35W and SH114 is growing. Farmer Brother's Coffee is
relocating their headquarters here. There is a warehouse, manufacturing
complex going up with about a million square feet, and I think there are
3 more hotels looking to build in that area. That part of town is
directly across 35w from the Texas Motor Speedway.

Right now we've got about 2200 people in the town, but estimates are
that by 2050 it'll be more like 50,000.

About the only way to keep informed about what is going on is to get
involved. So we attend all the town council meetings, I sit on the
board of the town's Economic Development Corp and my wife sits on the
board of the Community Development Corp. We keep talking about one of
us running for town council, but I don't know if it'll happen or not.

We always have the scanner on. It lives in the bathroom. Yeah, I know it's
weird.

This is good. I won't be the last one to know when they take out another
meth lab here in town.

Les Albert formulated the question :
I formed my scanning habits with an actual scanner (Radio Shack Pro
100, IIRC), but the utility of that around here diminished when all of
Orange County (sheriff and cities) went to encrypted voice-over-digital
radios. CHP is still analog, I think.

My scanner connects over SCSI and is made by Microtek. That's probably
not what's being discussed, though.

Handy for saving the police report, though.
