If it's really an SAT question, it would be high school kids. The
SATs are college-entrance exams.

It sounds like the equivalent of our old O-levels, these days known as
GCSEs here. My son's taking his this summer; he's just finishing the
mocks now. It's very similar in concept to O-levels, but different in
some details, such as being a lot easier than we had to face.

For his sins, this math(s) phobic was nominated as the one to help his
equally math(s) phobic daughter get through her math(s) GCSE.
Seemed to me that her GCSE syllabus covered everything in, and to at least
the same standard as, my 1960s Cambridge Examining Board 'O' level syllabus;
it also included one or two areas that were new to me.
Come to think of it, ISTR we've had this conversation before.

That's correct if you assume that you are limiting your production
on the available supply of yellow. The problem is, the number of
parts of yellow in each mixture when you set the total amount of
each mixture the same is different.
I lack sufficient data to make a determination. How much rent-to-own
furniture is in your house? Do you own a Flowbee? Have you ever
distributed literature for Lyndon Larouche?

Yes, but that's not what the question says. You're mixing equal parts of
one thing that's 3 parts red and 2 parts yellow and another thing that's
2 parts blue and one part yellow. So you wind up with five parts of
orange (2 parts of yellow and 3 parts of red) and three parts of green
(2 parts blue and one part yellow). And if you mix equal parts of orange
and green, you wind up with two parts of sludgy brown color that's made
up of 2/5 of a part of yellow, 3/5 of a part of red, 2/3 of a part of
blue, and another 1/3 of a part of yellow.
A bunch of math later, you find out that works out to a ratio of 9 parts
red, 10 parts blue, and 11 parts yellow, so the yellow makes up 11/30ths
of the new mixture.

Doing quickly in my head: 11/30
It's important to know what the question number is and how many
questions are in the section. SAT questions proceed in order of
difficulty within each section. If this is an early question, your
instincts are a good guide and your answer is correct. If this is a
later question, your first guess is a good indicator of what they
want to trick you into picking. Test takers get those questions wrong
more frequently than mere chance would dictate.
Now, since I happen to notice you are wrong in your instinct, I
conclude that the above question was one of the later ones.
Given that, you can cross out D and it is now statistically to your
advantage to guess, even if you cannot solve the problem or eliminate
other answers.

SAT tests are given in a high school student's junior year, which
means they are about 17 years old.
FWIW:
What I quickly realized in solving this is that I needed to come up
with a common denominator for the amounts of orange and green. Since
there are 5 parts making up the orange (3 + 2), and 3 parts making up
the green (1+2), the common denominator between 3 and 5 would be 15.
So orange consists, then, of 9 cups of red paint and 6 cups of yellow
paint, giving me 15 cups of orange paint.
And an equal amount (15 cups) of green paint consists of 10 cups of
blue paint and 5 cups of yellow paint.
Put those two together, and you've got 30 cups of paint in total, 11
of which are yellow (6+5).
OK, you're all homeopaths.

Junior in High School. I came across an old SAT study guide in a box of my
"teaching days stuff" - I used to use questions from the pre-tests as bonus
questions on tests I was giving when I was teahing 7th and 8th grade math.
I also used to be able to figure out the answers.
It's a sad, sad thing, I have to tell ya.

colleges and universities has become a more long-drawn out process
than it was then. I sent out three applications, got three
acceptances and decided where to go.

supply. I doubt my academic stats would get me into my old alma mater
these days.

My impression is that demand in the high-prestige schools has risen
more quickly than supply. If you believe that anything other than the
Ivy League means junior will end up a janitor, then the process is
stressful. If you want to send junior to a good state school, then
not so much. This is before we discuss small private liberal arts
schools.
For what it is worth, I am unpersuaded that there is any strong
correlation between a school's prestige (above some minimum
threshhold) and its educational opportunities. You can see students
in the same school choosing to get a real education next to students
choosing to spend four years practicing binge drinking and projectile
vomiting. The latter group has to make some token effort and keep the
tuition checks coming, but they don't have to actually get educated.
The correlation between prestige schools and quality of resumes and
networking is a different subject, of course.

Agreed.
But what with your various conditions and all the resulting meds, maybe you
should on the whole be pretty pleased with your ability to keep functioning
through them.
When I came home from hospital three weeks ago my brain kept bombing out
completely: I'd suddenly find I couldn't think straight at all, or even that
I couldn't focus on the words on screen or page. It's happening less often
now, and it was a relief to be *reasonably* sure I'd got the right answer to
your SAT question.

I went to a state school. UC Irvine. (Also had a couple of UCLA, but
that wasn't straight out of high school.) I don't think my
credentials would get me into that school today.
I remember talking a few years back with someone whose son had a
higher GPA and higher SAT than I did. Say 3.7 and 1440. He was
worried about getting into Arizona State. In my day, ASU was
somewhere below "safety school" down in "if the unthinkable happens."

I went to UC Santa Barbara. I didn't even bother applying anywhere
other than UC. Finances dictated an in-state public school, and my
credentials clearly qualified me for UC. The only question was which
campus. I'm not sure I could have gotten into Berkeley, at least not
as a freshman. It wouldn't surprise me if Irvine is hard to get into
nowadays, what with the whole Orange County thing going. So perhaps
your present-day counterpart would have to suck it up and go to UC
Riverside. There must be worse fates, even if we can't think of any
just right now.

I am less familiar with the situation in Arizona. The state's growth
has long since outstripped its infrastructure. It wouldn't surprise
me if this applies to its university system.
My real point is that where you get an undergraduate degree isn't
nearly as important as people tend to think. A more prestigious
school might help you in the job market right out of graduation, but
once you have a real work history the fact of having a degree matters
more than where it is from.
And, as I pointed out, none of this is particularly related to getting
an education. I saw any number of people do their time at UC Santa
Barbara taking more-or-less BS (not in the "Bachelor of Science"
sence) classes and taking their degree, while actually spending their
time partying. (UCSB is, after all, the only UC campus where you can
go surfing without leaving campus. This does, however, require a high
tolerance for tar.)

But the 'parts' are not to the same scale. Orange is 3/5 red and 2/5 yellow.
Green is 2/3 blue and 1/3 yellow. So when you add equal amounts of orange
and green, half that mixture is 2/5 yellow and half is 1/3 yellow. 2/5 of
1/2 is 2/10, 1/3 of 1/2 is 1/6. 2/10 equals 6/30 and 1/6 equals 5/30 so the
total is 11/30.
Or you could imagine some actual quantity - say 60 gallons of orange mixed
with 60 gallons of green. The orange contains 40% yellow dye which is 24
gallons ; the green contains 33 1/3% yellow which is 20 gallons ; the whole
thing contains 44 gallons yellow which is 11/30 of 120 gallons.

I'm a bit older than you and Opus, but not THAT much older. Back in our
day, if you had a combined SAT of 1200 and/or a GPA of 3.0 or higher,
and you had fulfilled the fabled A through F requirements, the U.C.
System *had* to let you in. It was written into the law. You didn't get
your first-choice campus, necessarily, but they had to let you in. That
is no longer the case.

Yeah...I think it depends on what you want to do. If you want to start
out as a journalism intern at the Wall Street Journal or New York Times,
you'd be better off coming from the Ivy League. I imagine some
journalists have started lower on the educational status ladder and
still gotten top positions later through an impressive portfolio, but
it's easier if you come out of a prestige school. I think it also
matters more on the East Coast. Yes, I know you live there. I have
encountered East Coast people who think any school on the East Coast is
superior to any school on the West Coast.

Ah, but "standard RGB scale" implies that you're engaged in additive colour
mixing. Wouldn't mixing dyes be subtractive?
In additive colour mixing using the standard RGB scale 11Y is produced by
11G+11R, so 9/30R+10/30B+11/30Y = 20/42R+11/42G+11/42B, which results in a
slightly dirty brick red. Think newly-congealed blood.
That's a little extreme. I mean, that one place, Stanford, almost has
to be better than some college on the East Coast. Gonzaga, maybe?

After more than 40 years in the halls of Academe I most heartily
agree. The schools I taught at were the 2nd tier, never the 1st
tier, yet I helped turn out some very successful students, including
one who became the Chief Geographer of the United States, the first
native-born Botswanan geologist, and three women who ended
up running their own environmental consulting firms.
It was co-operative: they provided the initiative and ability, and
I provided the training and opportunity. They wanted to learn and
I showed them how. I also am happy about the students I had who
could never have gotten into any of the prestige schools for a
variety of reasons, who were admitted to my school by the skin
of their teeth, who weren't the shiniest knives in the drawer,
but who had the guts and determination to overcome the fact
that they were neither brilliant nor well-prepared, and even
though it took some of them seven years drove themselves to
succeed and entered the real world with both a college education
and the ability to do well at their chosen professions.

You would think so, but it's an irritating attitude I've encountered
more than once. There are a variety of weird regional attitudes
towards colleges. Everyone in the Carolinas is convinced that Davidson
has the same prestige as Princeton, and no one outside of the Carolinas
has ever heard of Davidson.

U.S. has grades 1-12, plus kindergarten in many/most places. The SATs
are taken in grade 12. Most students graduate grade 12 at 17-18, so
depending on when their birthday is and when during the year they take
the test, they would take it at age 16-18.
I think the original question is pretty basic algebra, which is usually
taken in grade 9 or 10 (or at least it was 40 years ago).

I was rejected by Davidson. And by Princeton. So maybe they're right.
There is at least one other Wesleyan graduate here, I think. The school
has the opposite problem - it is convinced that no-one knows where or
what it is. A tee shirt sold while I was there read "NOT: Ohio
Wesleyan,... ", went on to list all of the local Wesleyan colleges, and
ended with "and NOT a small all-womens school outside of Boston."
Dom will appreciate this one - a fellow in church yesterday had a
sweatshirt with the University of Pennsylvania seal on it surrounded by
the words "NOT PENN STATE".

common ways of getting a wrong answer and include those in the possible
answers.
OTOH, a California friend of mine sent her daughter to a "fancy East
Coast college." When I asked where, she said "George Washington
University" in Washington DC-- which I'd had hammered into me as a
child was definitely less than "fancy." I'm sure it's a good school
'n' all, but I was expecting her to say Georgetown or Wesleyan or
something.

I have that T-shirt. My brother graduated from Wesleyan.
My wife mentioned some study she had recently seen which pretty much
confirmed that one's undergraduate degree has little to do with life
success, as measured by wealth and income. One study compared
students who graduated from these elite schools, versus students who
had been accepted by the elite schools but went elsewhere, for
whatever reasons. Their life performances were virtually identical.
She then read another study, which claimed the opposite result... but
she said that it said that there was about a $100,000 difference, on a
base of something like $2.8 million of net wealth, which to her seemed
like not much of a difference. I suppose $100,000 is not nothing, but
the general point is there. Obviously these studies have to try to
factor out the students' inherent aptitudes or intelligence or
whatever, which have some impact on how they actually perform once out
in the real world.
My wife said that the claim in the second study was that going to an
elite school is a help because of the networking it provides, which
helps in the on-the-job performance of these graduates. I talked
about the fact that, while I went to Harvard, and there were
influentials around and about there, that there was a real class
system that operated there. Virtually all of my friends were public
school students (using the US term for this)... the preppies from
Andover and the like, for the most part, hung around each other. Those
I've kept in touch with over the years are all commoners, like myself.
So simply going to a place like Harvard hardly ensured or facilitated
a lot of this networking stuff, though I'm sure there are cases where
it did.
She said that this study argued the effects were most pronounced for
the most disadvantaged students (especially African Americans), and I
maybe can believe that. But in general, the job performance depends
on the worker's skills, abilities, personalities, drive, etc. etc.

The kids usually take the PSATs in 10th (sometimes 9th or 11th), then
take the regular SATs once or twice in 11th and/or 12th grades.
We took the SATs once in the Ancient Years, as high school seniors.

Googling this, the SAT is offered in October, November, December,
January, March/April, May, and June. Since college applications are
usually due in around January of one's senior year, I guess that the
test is taken in one's junior year, since they don't offer in the fall
months. Early decison admittance to college would further require the
scores to be available early in one's senior year.
I liked Wesleyan when I did the college tour with my son. A bit of a
dicey neighborhood, alas. But a nice ethos, it seemed to me.
Penn's neighborhood wasn't exactly lovely, either.

Our local junior college where I grew up in suburban Chicago is Harper
Junior College. When people asked me where I was going to college,
I'd kind of slur the word "Harvard", and I found it let me fit in
better with everyone that way.

Yes, but this still didn't diminish my satisfaction that the answer
fit what I had come up with, even if it was wrong. It validated my
mental process as at least having some connection with the rest of the
human race. I figured, OK, that's good enough, it's time to move on
to the next one.
I'm joking, of course. When the answer matched what I had come up, I
was almost certain it must be wrong, because of those devious ETS
bastards. ALMOST TRICKED ME THERE, DIDN'T YOU.... I'M ON TO YOU!

I don't recall hearing of Davidson even though I spent a year at UNC.
The attitude I recall was that Duke was pretty much up there with
Harvard and Yale. I had never heard of Duke before I started looking
into grad school.

Sure. On the other hand, that doesn't cover the cost of an Ivy League
education versus a state school. So one could say you're a net loser
unless your parents paid for your Ivy League education and you're not
paying it forward by doing the same for your kids.

I agree with Bob Ward. - Dover Beach
Each SAT used to have an experimental section for this purpose. (They
probably still do, but I haven't looked at the subject in a while.)
The expermimental section didn't count toward your score. If you got
an SAT with 3 Math and 2 Verbal sections, you knew that one of the
Math sections didn't count. But you didn't know which one.
These experimental sections allowed you to do their research for
them. The questions would appear in later SATs arranged precisely in
order of difficulty. That wasn't a *perceived* order of difficulty,
you understand. It was a statistical order based on how many test
takers had missed that question in the experimental section.
If I recall, on the 25-question Math portion, the final 5 questions
defied the odds. That is, questions 21-25 were answered correctly
less than chance would dictate. These were the questions where the
common wrong answers were more attractive than the right answer.
But if you didn't know this, and were bright, you could waste a lot
of time on question 4, wondering what the trick was. There was no
trick on question 4. Pick the one that seems obvious.
