tune.

Mose Allison, but this one's from the 50s.

Well, three out of 200. And I'm a musician, too. Different music, I
guess.

Life is a Highway, Tom Cochrane

The 1900s is when I first got a CD player in my car, so I didn't listen to the
radio as much in the latter half of the decade. Heck, I hate to sound like my
parents, but half the time I couldn't understand the lyrics anyway. It wasn't
like the good ol' days, back in the 1970s, when I knew *all* the songs on the
radio, by cracky....

Wow. Even though I spend most of the 90s actively avoiding the sappy, pappy,
derivative, loathsome dreck that makes up the pop charts, I sort of thought
I'd get more than *one* out of 200 lyrics. Four or five others seemed sort
of familiar, but I think they just reminded me other other songs from
another era. Do the 70s next, and I promise I'll do better.

I think at least one of these is by Train. 1 sounds like Drops of

(This song has a very long title IIRC. Something about a phonebooth?
May also feature B.B. King. Or maybe I am confusing it with several
other songs....)

OK - no problem. Now keep your word and "do better", which shouldn't be too
difficult - hell, *I* did better on this one than I did on the 90's one,
which surprised me. But I knew more of the songs themselves than the
artists. Too many of them seem to be described as "oh, you know, that
*guy*..."

1 February made me shiver
2 All the downtown ladies call him treetop lover
3 Chicken in a bread pan picking out dough
4 You don't have to be coy, Roy
5 Fly me away to the bright side of the moon
6 But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
7 He gave his life for tourism
8 Colored lights can hypnotize
9 To think that only yesterday I was cheerful, bright and gay
10 Her name was Ann and I'll be damned
11 Almost rang the phone off the wall
12 In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps
13 Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose
14 Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls.
15 Hey ramblin' boy now wontcha settle down?
16 You don't give a heck about the man with the bible in his hand
17 Well we got no class and we got no principles
18 Time was drifting, this rock had got to roll
19 At a tombstone bar in a juke-joint car
20 I ain't never been with a woman long enough for my boots to get old.
21 Conventionality belongs to yesterday
22 Music makes you dance and gives you spirit to take a chance
23 I never knew me a better time
24 Gonna fly right out of here without a single word
25 Give me a dime so I can phone my mother
26 Too much of anything is not good for you
27 With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
28 Papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done
29 Vernon'll meet me when the Boac lands
30 I wanna be your be your rubber ball
31 I feel a warmth in my heart and my soul that I never knew
32 Gonna dance with my baby till the night is thru
33 Why in the world would anybody put chains on me?
34 You gave away the things you loved
35 I'm not supposed to be alone with you
36 He was born in the summer of his 27th year
37 The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
38 Lions and tigers who wait in the shadows
39 Born a man-child of the sun
40 All of the bad feelings have disappeared
41 Mount your horses draw your sword
42 I got a funny feeling when she walked in the room
43 Just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
44 Seven horses seem to be on the mark
45 Mama, take this badge off of me
46 It's got a back beat, you can't lose it
47 Well, it's no big sin to stick your two cents in
48 'Cause you're a rambler and a gambler and a sweet-talking-ladies man
49 I'll shine up my old brown shoes
50 Everyday is such a perfect day to spend alone with you
51 Do you think I'm home just sitting around?
52 We've come too far to leave it all behind
53 If I can't find me a honey to help me spend my money
54 Your kisses lift me higher
55 Now, I really want to see you
56 You drink the night away and forget about everything
57 Did I hear you say he was a-meetin' you here today
58 Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
59 Don't know the reason that I stayed here all season
60 The soldier-blues were trapped on a hillside
61 You know that's a game that I hate to lose
62 Don't you know that it's wrong to take what is given you
63 Used to be my life was just emotions passing by
64 If you give a little more then you're asking for
65 I'm savin' all my lovin' for someone who's lovin' me
66 Before I go insane I hold my pillow to my head
67 It was the dark of the moon on the sixth of June
68 Let the music take your mind
69 Thunder is your night light
70 Til forever on it goes, through the circle fast and slow
71 Feel the city breaking and everybody shaking
72 You know sometimes words have two meanings.
73 Before you can eat you gotta dance like Fred Astaire
74 I remember to this day the bright red Georgia clay
75 I don't understand what you're lookin' to find
76 Young and beautiful, but someday your looks'll be gone
77 Turned on some music to start my day
78 I might have to move heaven and earth to prove it to you, baby
79 He floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee
80 Ol' Mississippi, she's callin' my name
81 Close your eyes and think of me
82 Honey doggone it I depend upon it
83 Reflexes got the better of me
84 In my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
85 He came on a summer's day bringin' gifts from far away
86 I won't share you with another boy
87 I wonder if I'm dreaming, I feel so unashamed
88 Running around as you do with your head up in the clouds
89 The rich relationed hometown queen married into what she needs
90 I knew her smile in an instant
91 There's a reason why I'm feelin' so high
92 I've been waiting in the hall, been waiting on your call
93 You had me down, 21 to zip
94 There's something wrong here, there can be no denying
95 The operator says 40 cents more for the next three minutes
96 I remember every little thing as if it happened only yesterday
97 So if I call you, don't make a fuss
98 Your ability to reason is swept away
99 Stranger dressed in black, she's a hungry child
100 You got your spell on me, baby.
101 Like a picture she was layin' there
102 Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming
103 Players only love you when they're playing
37% 104 You better get yourself together darlin'
105 Our love is like a ship on the ocean
106 The sudden motion made me skip
107 I'm a loveable man and I can take you to the nearest star
108 Sail on silver girl
109 You got your demons, you got desires
110 I never understood a single word he said
111 Will you be ready when I call your bluff
112 Seesaw swingin' with the boys in the school
113 Gee my life's a funny thing, am I still too young
114 I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud
115 I could not run away it seemed, we'd seen each other in a dream
116 You'll always be the only one for me
117 I would kiss the ground she walks on
118 I can see in your eyes, I'm happy you know it
119 Never heard nothin' but bad things about him
120 I got no fare to ride a train
121 These are the lips that can't help callin' your name
122 You can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself
123 There is wonder in most every thing I see
124 I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie
125 Whatever you want to do is all right with me
126 They stand when I walk through the neighborhoods
127 She ain't got no money her clothes are kinda funny
128 You step inside but you don't see too many faces
129 Togetherness, well that's all I'm after
130 Oh, babe I wanna taste your lips
131 You like your life in a free-form style
132 Rubbing sticks and stones together makes the sparks ignite
133 She danced without a net upon the wire
134 Everything I do always takes me home to you
135 Well you're dirty and sweet, clad in black
136 Take time to make time, make time to be there
137 You started this fire down in my soul
138 Call it morning driving thru the sound and in and out the valley
139 There's too many places I gotta see
140 I looked at your face every day
141 It was like lightning, everybody was frightening
142 She's wearing my high school ring on her chain
143 If it were easy as fishin' you could be a musician
144 You make my motor run, my motor run
145 The boss don't mind sometimes if you act the fool
146 You keep on dancin' and the room gets hot
147 Just because a record has a groove don't make it in the groove
148 Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
149 Way down around Vicksburg around Louisiana way
150 We weren't searching for some pie in the sky summit
151 Used to be's don't count anymore
152 If you miss it, I feel sorry, sorry for you
153 Things ain't what they used to be, no, no
154 Well, I don't know but I say love is kind
155 I gotta catch a noon train
156 When the music stopped I returned to my seat
157 At night we ride through mansions of glory
158 Demonstrating sweet love and affection
159 You can sing it with a cry in your voice
160 On board I'm the captain so climb aboard
161 When it all was over we had to find another place
162 A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one
163 You've brought a lot of sunshine into my life
164 The dying embers of the night, a fire that slowly fades to dawn
165 We've just begun to get our share of the world's delights
166 You tell yourself you're not my kind but you don't even know your mind
167 When the drinks finally hit her she said I'm no quitter
168 I'll stay on the bus forget about us
169 If anyone should ever write my life story
170 So many nights I'd sit by my window
171 Some people call me the space cowboy
172 You walked out of my dreams and into my arms
173 There are times when all the world's asleep
174 So smile for a while and let's be jolly
175 We let so many dreams just slip through our hands
176 The breakup we had has made me lonesome and sad
177 See the curtains hanging in the window
178 There'll be no parade, no TV or stage
179 Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
180 There's been a hoot owl howling outside my window now
181 All we do crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
182 The stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach
183 No man does it all by himself
184 You can go sleep at home tonight if you can get up and walk away
185 You're fine and you're mine and you look so divine
186 You're a genie in disguise
187 Your dreams were your ticket out
188 I'm a soldier in the war on poverty
189 Fever, temperature's risin' now
190 I broke a heart, that's gentle and true
191 Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality
192 Sweet, sweet Connie, doin' her act
193 Talk about your childhood wishes
194 Take it easy, take me higher, liar liar, house on fire
195 Ah, peace throughout the land
196 Nice guys get washed away like the snow and the rain
197 Sometimes I can't help seeing all the way through
198 Spirits rise and their dance is unrehearsed
199 There is none so blind as he who will not see

Wow, that's a lot of lyrics. And I know so very, very few of them. The

that he didn't get, and we can pretend I knew all the ones he did get (since
once I read them, I remember them NOW, but that's no good.)

When I read the words, I can hear the rythym in which they're sung much faster

Sweet, "Ballroom Blitz" from *Desolation Boulevard*. The same album had "Fox
on the Run" and AC/DC. I'm not usually one for glam-bands, but I really liked
Sweet for some reason. "Love is like Oxygen" was another big hit for them, but
"Little Willie" is probably my favorite by them -- it's just so silly!

You wouldn't like it if it were sung to you on the school bus on a

I never saw the movie, but the novelization of the movie did the
impossible. Take a song or movie written to celebrate explosions and
big crashes, and make the plotline make sense. But the song had to be
rewritten cuz the "Jaguar haulin ass" was now the primary supporting
character.

It was a shot. Frankly, I really couldn't tell
Chapin from Nilsson anyway. They were both kind of lanky geeks. But
then, it was the 70's and a most singer/songwriters were lanky geeks.

The song had a sequel, and a movie was made. The song was rewritten
(inferior) for the movie. I have the book from the movie. It ain't
great literature, but it's a better novel than might be expected.

Heaven's Sakes - keep it under your hat. You have no idea the looks of
death you get when you mention SVB to people of a certain age in a
social setting. Worse, if it's a group of people that -liked- that
song, they'll start singing it.

He was probably one of the ones who also sang "My Girl Bill".
The Sweet and Jim Stafford (and the Fifth Dimension, for that matter)
have an awful lot to answer for from guys named Bill who were in high
school in the early 1970s.
Though I've known women named Rhonda and Wendy who would like the
Beach Boys exterminated.

That was Connie Hamzy, by the way.

Recap from a site: "Connie Hamzy of Little Rock, rock-music's most
notoriously lubricious groupie of the 1970s. Known throughout the rock
world as Sweet Sweet Connie. Backstage exploits at Barton Coliseum
chronicled in Cosmopolitan magazine and memorialized in song by Grand
Funk Railroad. Played herself in a 1974 movie titled "Sweet Sweet
Connie." Announced 1995 she might run for Congress in 1996 but didn't."

She also did an autobiographical book.

There are probably some Barbara Anns that aren't very happy with 'em,
either.

Went to a dance, lookin' for romance
Saw Bobberann and I got into her pants...

Speaking of nonlyrics (that was how we used to sing it; I'm not saying
it's on any mis-heard lyrics sites), I think my favorite misunderstood
line comes from "Help Me Rhonda":

Well since she put me down

Worth looking out for: David Bromberg's _Demon In Disguise_ album,
which contains a live rendition of Mr. Bojangles and an amusing
version of how the song came to be written. It really did come from an
encounter with an old man in a New Orleans drunk tank.
("Jerry wasn't there on a research project...")

Kim, I had lots of fun attempting to answer the '70s lyrics quiz, and I'm
sure many of the younger posters here had as much fun with the one from the
'90s. Did you compile these quizzes yourself, or did you obtain them from
someone or somewhere?

It took the US that long to come up with a suitable revenge for some of the
songs that the UK exported here in the '60s, such as "I'm Henry VII, I Am"
and "Mellow Yellow."

Boy...it MUST have taken a long time...By the time I heard of it, it
was about Henry VIII. Lyrics sounded better, too.

There was a learning curve. Back in the Music Hall Days there was 'I'm

The Summoning' was a failure, as was 'Henry IV the Intravenous'. But 'I'm
Henry V' as sung by Bobby V was a smash. Then came 'I'm Henry VI Warshawski
I am' and the rest is, er, history.

*ME* compile them. Hahahaha. I was surprised I got like 4 of the 90's quiz
correct. And I think that was just because my kids must have played the
song - I hardly ever listen to the radio or MTV. I did better on the 70's
quiz, but I still don't think I got as many correct as *anyone* who posted
their answers.

No, I got the quizzes from some Games magazines I was going through before
dumping them in my yard sale. Although it did end up that I kept them all -
couldn't bear to part with them, especially after going through them all
again. They are just a treasure trove of useless crap - and I *do* love the
quizzes.

And I did find one cool thing when going through the closets for junk to
sell - a baseball signed by the 1993 White Sox team. Our resident "Mayor of

I wasn't actually talking "markets". My reference shows it as reaching
#5 on the Billboard national chart, entering that listing the week of
6/19/76, on the Brother label, #1354. It was on the chart for 13 week.

The same source does not show Berry charting it nationally after its
original 1957 run. It entered the chart 11/11/57, hit #8 and, like the
Beach Boys' cover, was on the chart for 13 weeks (Chess 1671). Through
the book's 1991 cut-off, Berry did make the Top 40 after the early 1973
release of "Reelin' & Rockin'", which only made it to #27. He'd just
scored his *only* hit #1 with "My Ding-A-Ling", which charted in
September 1972.

Never heard of that one. Country? It's not in my book of every song
that hit #40 or higher on the Billboard pop charts, from the first
through some date in 1991.

Seems like they drag out an old Burl Ives tune every Christmas, that has
a line about "holly jolly Christmas" (might be in the title, as well),
but it's upbeat (as versus "never promised you..."). That never made
the Top 40.

He was fairly active in the environmentalist movement a few years ago
in B.C. and lived up on the Sunshine Coast. The current Vancouver
phone book actually lists him with an address in Madeira Park (about
20km out of Sechelt, about 60-70km from Vancouver via ferry). Unless
there's another Terry Jacks on the Sunshine Coast. Maybe he spends
part of the year in Tucson, but I'd say he's still one of ours.

My city had one radio station, with a partial franchise to the
Canadian government CBC chain, but with an idiosyncratic attitude
towards choosing its songs.

They would play the top 163 songs at the end of each year according to
the established charts, but on a given evening could well be playing
something nobody else knows. They could well have chosen the Berry
one after the Beach Boys (Beach Boys??) version made the US charts.
Or it might have been some Canadian singer who just SOUNDED like
Berry. I don't remember when in the mid seventies our Canadian
Content rules dropped into place. It may be that the older Berry song
was not rated by nationality where the newer BB version was explicitly
non Canadian, and the two versions might rate differently under the
content rules.

It is from about this period when I learned the song "Summer in the
City" by Ball and Chain. Ever since, I think of the Loving Spoonful
version as inferior. But I've never met anyone else who has ever
heard of Ball and Chain.

Really? How cool. I never cared for "Seasons in the Sun", but I do love the
follow-up single, "Christina." And "Where Evil Grows" (back when he was still

The correct answer to the lyric in the quiz in "I Never Promised You a Rose
Garden" by Lynn Anderson.

Although I'm not claiming that no one ever did a Christmas parody of it, and
that parody may have very well contained the referenced lyric.

Am I projecting, or do I detect a slight pejorative connotation to your
identifying a recording as a "cover"?

Did Axton release a version of "Joy To the World" before Three Dog Night?
Although, technically, I guess a "cover" is any performance of a song by
anyone other than its author, my conception of a "cover" is of a second
performance later in time than the original version.

Anyway, my answers to Kim's quiz were the artists who recorded the most
popular version of the song. That's why I associated, for example, "Me &
Bobby McGee" with Janis Joplin, not with its author, Kris Kristofferson.

Susan was his wife, not sister. They divorced a couple of years after
WWYGB (1970); I think the last single they had together was Where Evil
Grows in 1971. Susan had several more singles through at least 1974,
notably Good Friends and a deadly cover of Love Has No Pride (better
known as done by Linda Ronsdadt).

You're right about the quiz line -- the Brenda Lee lyrics were:

Voices singing let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly

I didn't realize [someone unattributed] was joking with the "I Never
Promised You a Holly Jolly Xmas" thing. And I wrote my other response
to you before I figured out that I had the line wrong anyway -- thus
making parody a nonissue, as the only common language is, simply, "lets
be jolly". I guess the meter tricked me, since the Anderson line can be
sung like the Brenda Lee line with which I was familar.
