SWIMBO and I have dinner at the 99 Restaurant on Cambridge Street at
Woburn Four Corners at least a couple of times a month en route to home
because it's a short walk from our office and a great place to get a
good quick simple meal at a reasonable price.

We've lived near that area for the past 42 years and remember that the
99 Restaurant opened up in its present location about 35 years ago.

What we can't remember is what occupied that location before the 99
Restaurant took over.

My memory keeps telling me that what was there was a sister restaurant
to Simione's in Central Square, Cambridge, a reasonably priced
Italian-American place I ate at about once a week during my student days
at MIT in the 1950s. But SWIMBO doesn't agree and thinks it was a White
Tower restaurant.

I've asked Woburn Town Government but haven't received an answer yet.

Thanks AFCANs,

Jeff

I live less than a mile away from that spot, but haven't been here for 35
years, so I had to rely on my sharp research skills rather than my poor
memory. Looks like the wife gets partial credit - it was "White Spot," not
"White Tower" - but you're correct that it was related to Simeone's.

Thank you!

SWIMBO and I decided to go 50-50 on who got the correct answer.

Now I'm trying to find out how many years ago that location turned into
a "99 Restaurant". I'm guessing somewhere in the range of 30 to 40 years
ago.

The Cambridge (Mass.) Public Library says they have a Simeones' White
Spot Menu in their archives. (On last page of this link.):

Google Earth's historical imagery seems to go back only as far as Mar '95,
and not at a resolution where you can tell what the sign says.
No street view at that time, it seems.
I don't see photo links in the area.
(and Panaramio is going away, if it isn't gone already.)

Backyard trees were smaller then.

If you don't have GE desktop already,
you need Chrome (browser) to get it.
The "New Google Earth" runs as a browser app,
but it's menu has a link to download the desktop version.

I haven't figured out how to do the historical imagery in the Chrome version.

The 99 was a steakhouse as I recall was Bonanza in late 70' very early 80's. The White Spot was in the location of the adjacent bank to 99's and after it went belly up became Mayflower furniture store until it burned down. Simones was located near where the McDonalds is today. Large A frame building an adjacent to the First National Food Store (where Northern Bank building and in front of bowling alley in the rear (just a foundation remains) all accessible by the side rd from Russell St to Lexington St (behind Citizen Bank and DD). Carpetbager from West Side....

Yes as someone noted it was Simeone's White Spot, now occupied by a McDonald's and a Dunkin Dounuts. A First National fgrocery store was to the left of the White Spot.
The White Spot was purchased by my Father and Uncle's probably in the mid to late 50's and renamed it Simeone's White Spot. I was very young but understand that this purchase was done because there was a strong push to run an "Inner Belt" highway all the way to Boston thru Cambridge and Central Sq.. This highway never happened and I believe explains today why multi lane Rt. 3 South terminates abruptly in Burlington.

Our family expanded the White Spot to include a Pizza Patio which was very popular. Unlike our Cambridge restaurant, the White Spot offered a counter breakfast area, incredible fried clams and fried chicken, a casual pizza patio with an ice cream counter. As a kid, this was a dream place to hang out and pig out. Ultimately problems with the lack of sewage system was our downfall in the mid to late 60's.
