I expect professional sportsmen to be petulant, venal and selfish.
Then along comes the Wigan soccer team who were beaten 9-1, one of the
highest margins ever at that level (maybe equivalent to an NFL team losing
100-7) and the players decide to refund the ticket costs of the fans who
travelled to see them:

"The Latics crashed to the second worst defeat in Barclays Premier League
history as they conceded eight second-half goals at White Hart Lane.
Defender Mario Melchiot admits the result was embarrassing and, along with
the rest of his well-paid team-mates, will pay away fans the cost of
tickets.
"We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters, and
this is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their tremendous
loyalty," Melchiot told the club's official website."
